Looks like a good start, I'm going to start up some 3D work when i get a new PC, did have 3DSMAX before i got my laptop but it ran terribly on 512MB... and it won't run on my laptop because it doesn't like the graphics.
But that as i said is a good start :D

well if you need any advice or want to talk to a fellow cgi addict, msn me.

I really wish I could figure out those programs. Sketchup is nice for basic things, but when you start doing curves and complex designs, it just doesn't have the right tools needed to do it. Looks nice though!

here is an example of some of my work: So if you have any questions, just let me know. :)

That's awesome renderman! How long have you been into it? Is it a hobby or profession?

Hey that looks great Cymae! Very realistic looking, I wish I could do that kind of stuff. What kind of system specs does a person need to be able to create realistic looking CGI work like that?

@Renderman: That is wow. How long have you been working on that piece?

I wish I didn't want to stick with laptops so much, to get really great system specs you need like 2grand, whereas a pc would only cost around half that for the same specs. ><. But I love the portability, so I guess I'm stuck. lol

Uuu.. 3d graphics :) monitor looks nice and shiny :)

I'm curious too on snowfire questions: how long did you take to model it? By the looks of it, it has an inside too.. So, I guess it was fairly tedious :)

I'm no pro, but for doing a good and fast job I use a PC with a good video adapter for the modeling and, at least now that I can afford it, another one with a fast cpu and lots of ram for the rendering (or more fast PCs if possible).. But for modeling one or two really complex objects, I have high enough fps from a 6800 and an XP cpu.. with an integrated or lower power gpu, it gets annoying after the scene gets more complex.. And with vista and its driver support.. XP is better at this now.. errmm..

Oh, I think you could do some things on a laptop with say a Core 2 Duo and the software rendering method when working in the viewports.. Give it a try, it may help if you have integrated graphics..

I was thinking about trading in my Inspiron 9200 (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-inspiron-9200-for/4507-3121_7-31200978.html?tag=sub) for an Inspiron 1720 (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-inspiron-1720/4505-3121_7-32471367.html). It has dual core processing and the option for dual hard drives for up to 500GB for all my media storing needs. But I'm not sure on its gpu. It has the option for nVidia Go 8400M GS (128mb) and the option for nVidia GeForce Go 8600M GT (256MB), but I would only be able to afford about a grand altogether on a new laptop, so I would be stuck with the stock ATI Radeon Xpress X1270 or Mobile Intel GMA X3100. Would stock be good enough?

Sorry for the thread hijack.

hmm...
A buddy of mine has an asus with the lower core 2 cpu (1,6 GHz) and it still beat my xp rig when it came to final rendering (big surprise there.. not ;) ).. but in the graphics department, with only the integrated extreme graphics.. didn't do much... so, a better graphics platform would be needed.. maybe the newer x3100 is much better than the older version.. Still, it was acceptable up to one point where the frame rate drops to slide-show mode..

On the other hand, another buddy of mine has a mobile celeron with an ati video controller (older model, but can play games at low res and watch a movie too).. it scores low on the cpu, but can surely keep a good framerate with a low-poly model.. This one is more cpu limited, but can use the opengl or d3d acceleration with results.. Wouldn't recommend it though.

So, I would go for the next to cheapest thing :) if you can upgrade it later with discrete graphics.. of course, if you could find a system that doesn't come with an OS(vista..) and change it to say XP (if u use it as a PC and not a mobile.. maybe there are more energy saving features in vista..) and still have the possibility to make a graphics subsystem upgrade later.. that would be best.. I checked dell's shop to see what you can get: a pretty good desktop replacement, for office and web, with limited but existing gaming value.. And with the right tweeks, a nice work station for about a 1,25k.. If I could get a system like this so cheap here, I would sell one my older system and work my ass for another month.. then I would get my reward :)

I'm sorry for hijacking too :)

im rendering on my laptop and desktop to get more work in there..but my laptop does the job nicely. Here's another failed attempt which has haunted my bread-eating days forever:

I like it! I can't decide if it's peanut butter or jelly, but that adds to the mystery of why a piece of bread is in the middle of the floor ;).

What program are you using and where are you learning it?

3ds max with vray. self taught. we have classes at uni but i dont think i've learnt anything from it lol

Here are my finished black and silver apple widescreen monitor renders. This was for a small ad for a friends marketing class: (click the picture to go to the movie :D)

It's not peanut butter and jelly, it's Nutella, a choc-hazelnut spread. Very tasty stuff.

Nice work, now if you can scribble TBCS in that Nutella we have a wallpaper!

the nutella does NOT like to be indented...i found this out the hard way. but i can probably etch it in gold around the plate?

Heh, I do put it on just about anything I can. Toast, sandwiches (peanut butter and Nutella, mmmm!) crackers...

Thanks you guys, as you might have guessed based on my screen name I create 3d models professionally. That building was one of my projects in Brooklyn NY. We laser scan the buildings and then rebuild them in 3d. It took me about 4 weeks to model that. But that is not my largest project. I did a campus of 61 buildings with sitework, roads, and trees. That took me almost a year to complete.

well after several requests to write TBCS in the nutella, and failures with the 3D package, i give you this: TBCS in nutella on bread on a plate on the floor!
