I was bored and wanted to do something with one of my external hdd's.

I swapped out the 80gig for a 160

Cut a square out on top, or more like melted it... I don't have a dremel anymore so I used a solder iron and a "mouse" sander.

put a mini fan on the bottom out of the back of an old dvd drive (vaio)

put some fins on it to help it with the extra heat a little.

The white stuff is from the rag I used.

Looks nice, although HD's perform better warm, one fan and heatsink aint gonna make it go sub 0 :).

The top looks like its dieing to be painted..

I don't know how believable that is, because if it were true nobody would waste their time and money making hard drive coolers or waterblocks, but...

Warm, not hot. The coolers for internal hard drives dont need to be used unless you have a 15k rpm hdd that would run hotter then your average.

Since that thread, people usually wont cool their hdd's.

It's going to take more than one forum thread to convince me ;).

Google results still say heat is a common reason for hard drive failure. That, along with age, brand, and model.

Those Maxtor drives are pretty popular. +rep for the mod. Here's what I did with mine.

I've started a thread on the subject of HDD operating temperatures HERE (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9809) because I think it an interesting one.
