I am looking at using the E-Z Water from woodland scenics (http://www.woodlandscenics.com/ ) But I am wanting it to be a deep blood red when done, because its being made into a pool of blood. I still would like it to be translucent enough to be lit up from one or 2 red LEDs that will be stuck in it.

What I am needed to know is if any one knows of a die that I can add to it or if standard food coloring would work. stuff is a little pricy to go with a lot of trial an error. I figure I will have enough getting the color right.

If you were an emo kid you could easily make it a real pool of blood.

try looking at some of the things the table-top wargaming guys do for terrain. THere's a host of inspiration to find there.
places like www.hirstarts.com and www.terragenesis.co.uk have interesting features to look at. Most are related to buildings, but you should be able to find a how-to or nine, for making water.

The making of water is not an issue. Its a question of standard dye taking to the process I am looking at or will the plastic type meterial repel the dye.

Castin'Craft Transparent Dyes (http://www.munrocrafts.com/CastinCraft.html) . about $5 USD per bottle. For blood get blue and red. I also suggest using the Cast'n Craft resin for the blood pool. It will light up much better than the scenery stuff, which can be milky white in spots, making your blood pinkish.

That is the type of dyes I was looking for when I picked up the water plastic stuff, but the hobby store I was in didn't have any.

I have the tap plastic resien and blue dye left over from another project I was working on. I will just need to get the red dye.

in my trial of using just red food coloring dye, I got it to look like it was jelly (Acording to a 6 year old boy - and I would say that is the best discription for it)

but my other half would kill me if I spent 10K on building a computer.

Yeah I would like to get someone to front some of the money on one of the cases I am making.

Sorry for post 3 times in a row ... but the blood test is in
1st one has both test jars. One with the plastic water mixture that looks like Jelly (one on the right. And Finishing Resin with a blue / Red mixture. Stuff on the tooth pick looks like it came from a bloody noise.

You've gotta watch when your working with resins, some chemicals that are used in other dyes will keep resins from sloidifing or harding fully (then they stay tacky forever).

I've used The Castin'Craft Transparent Dyes with sevral types of plastic resins and they work great.

For your blood pool the best bet is to order the clear resin and dyes right from Castin'craft (the 1-800 # is on there web site) or check out Smooth-on (http://www.smooth-on.com/default.htm) I've never orderd from them but have heard good things about there products.

Good Luck,

I know the food coloring dye didnt have any effect of the 5min Expoy Resin I used during my test. The clear Resin I will use with the project is from Tap Plastic and the transparent dyes will be from them as well. So the issue of it not drying. Shouldn't be an issue (unless I mess up the mixure for the catylis). Tap Plastic has been reconmended to me from ClearCaseMan (Owner of www.ClearComputercase.com)

I need to make a mold, so I can just glue this in place and not have a chance of the resin heating up and warping the acrylic that it will be sitting on.

Tap is also a good Co. Most of the clear resins are the same chemicaly it just boils down to has the price and size product you need. I would love to see pics of your finished casting. (If your going to make a mold make sure the release agent is compatable with both the mold and resin, If your not sure how to build a mold check Tap Plastics Mold making guide (http://www.tapplastics.com/moldmaking_guide/index.php?) or Smooth-ons How to make molds and casting (http://www.smooth-on.com/howtomakemolds.htm) The Tap one is more of an overview the smooth-on is a step by step guide )
