Hi there and first ill say glad to be a member of this forum some of the work you guys do is top notch 8)

Ok were do i begin, ive been hovering around these forums studying the work you guys do for some time now but have never really wanted to jump in and have a go as i just didnt think i could keep up the standerd of work thats shown here but now im gonna do it.
ive never attempted serious hardcore mods before, ive modded an xbox 360,striped it down put a window in few lights and a new paint job and it did turn out really well but now im going all in i plan to make a case from scratch only salvaging a back card mount and i/o plate from an old case.
my plan is a full aluminum case with mesh and other features to make it look a little different, ive drawn up some rough plans then made a mock up from cardbored to get a feel for dimensions and placement of parts, i pretty much have the whole construction planned out in my head already and how it is going to fit together, but this is all easier said than done :)

dimensions are depth of 380mm with a width of 400mm and a height of 180mm now in my mock up allowing for thickness of metal and other things ive managed to get everything to fit in nicely and still have room for 4 quiet 80mm fans 2 at the front and 2 exhaust at the back.
the case should fit 3 hard drives aswell if i do it right.
im doing it as a desktop htpc style case just because i like them and it makes the desighn a little easier as a first ground up build.

ok now ive told you my plans here are my queries, the material i feel im going to have most difficulties with is the mesh im going to get some acryan meshx (silver) and this will be the main body ie:side and back walls of the case.
now i whant to make this in 3 pieces each side piece which will wrap around to the front by 100mm and be fixed under the central aluminum face plate the third will be for the back this is straight foreword and not a sorry but the side pieces will need 2 accurate 90 degree bends in them and im unsure how to bend the metal successfully any ideas on this one?
secondly boldly or rather stupidly ive never worked with aluminum before so the bit that daunts me the most is cutting the hole in the front face for the dvd ron in there i will be putting a lian li aluminum stealth plate to keep it smart but how hard is aluminum to work with?
aluminum is on order being cut to size for me proffesionally to take away some chance of me ballsing the long cuts up and should be with me next week so any help or advice you can give will be most welcome.

First of all welcome to the forums!

the easiest way to bent the mesh is to sandwich the mesh between a bench and a piece of timber on top and clamp all of this together and bend it with a mallet.
and with aluminium it has to be the easiest metal to work with, cutting and filing it is very easy because its so soft.
hope this helps

aluminium is easy to work with :D if you have the right tools and work space. what tools do you have at your disposal?

Welcome! With the levels of creativity and fabrication here, it's easy to be intimidated. I know I was when I first joined. I quickly learned that EVERYONE here is cool as hell, including Paul. I have to admit that this is the first forum where everyone is respectful of everyone else regardless of skill level and age, and the mods have very little to do in terms of cleaning up grade school spats.

While I can't contribute a lot, I can tell you that cutting the aluminum is going to be easy. Mark off the area with masking tape. Then drill pilot holes in the corners, and cut with a jigsaw equipped with a metal blace. Be careful not to cut up to the line.. you'll want to leave a little room for sanding and filing. Post up the pics of that xbox.. Enjoy a welcome +rep from me!

i do have an xbox 1 though rough modded into a digi box case that will be getting the aluminum treatment if this project goes well, its sort of the inspiration behind this project as i intended the xbox1 to be the first mod but then thought what the hell all this money might as well go on the pc then ill worry about the media player.

as you can see it just didn't get passed the middle stages, after i filled in and primed the face plate i decided it looked ugly and so stopped work.
I think this is begging for the sleak look of brushed aluminum doesn't count as a mod though as it never really had tyhe light of day
