I'm building a media pc for my buddy who will be using it for his band.

I was thinking this mobo (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813157114) and this cpu (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819112213)

I sold my old computer for 225... turns out he would have bought it for 300. *sigh*

Celeron D is a crap processor. I should know I'm using a 3.06ghz version now. As soon as you try doing two things at once it slows right down. I'm planning on upgrading to a Pentium D or a cheaper Core 2 Duo.
Even a Pentium 4 is better than a Celeron D.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I thought there was something wrong with that picture... 70 bucks for 3.3 ghz... lol.

Would it be safe to copy the hdd of a dell and use the OS for the new computer?

Windows license only allows use on one PC, plus the Dell version might not work on anything but a Dell. They do some weird stuff to stop it being used elsewhere.

if your talking about just taking the files from one hdd and putting them on another i wold advise against it. it might work if you were really stuck but youd want to boot to linux or something to make sure you get every single file. also dell might have something that messes it up on other computers

this is gunna be difficult... he has champaign dreams on a beer pocket book. He wants more than 2.8ghz... 250+gigs memory.... 20" widescreen lcd... at least a gig of ram... etc etc...

I was thinking... I have an e6600 and 200gigs of mem that I could throw in and take the profit to put into a Q6600.

Are you talking about a Pentium or a Celeron?

The "D" in Celeron D stands for "Dammit! Why didn't I buy a better processor?"

I know I wish I didn't waste my money on the Celeron D and I should have spent the extra on a P4.

250+ gigs of Memory? Have fun finding that!

Sell him the E6600 and go for the Q6600, it's a good processor and overclocks quite well, just make sure you use an after-market cooler for it.

I meant storage. OBBBBVIOUSLY not ram. :)

Just tell him this:

Dude, you're getting a Dell (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspndt_53x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs). (third one from left)

and he'll be like "OMG!" ;) (at least if his IQ is similar to his account balance: "he has champaign dreams on a beer pocket book")

Pentium D all the way. Running one right now. The Presler core works wonders :P.

I even surpassed a Core2Duo's benchmarks with a little overclocking :).

Our family has 2 laptops and one desktop running celerons. They are indeed crap.

pretty much anything with the word celeron in the name is not worth looking at. thats just the rule that i myself use.
