Candy paint works like noraml paint. there's just more steps.

Prep (clean the metal like normal)
Prime (like you would...or better)
wet sand (I would always do this but some don't) with 1000grit or higher
base coat (normaly a solid color, maybe fleck but alot of time it's at least metalic)
I lay 2-3 coats of base then wetsand again
now Lay the candy, again 2-3 coats depending on how you want it the more coats the more candy color will be there.
Wetsand again lightly there shouldn't be many bumps in the candy.

2 coats of clear
wetsand
final coat of clear.

Most times you willn't have to buff and polish, but if your going for the mirror finish it's a great way to get there.

Good luck,

I've got a few pics of the proccess around here I'll get them up when I find them.

Here is the 3 base coats Purple metalic. (I don't have a pic of the primer...but it was gray)

Here is the 3 coats of candy (blue in this case) and 3 coats of clear.

hope this give you a better Idea of what your doing.

You can do this with auto paints (best selection of colors...customizable)
Or with Rattle cans (hard to find candies though, and limited colors when you do find them) the proccess is the same.

Good Luck!,
