Good for him, bad for us... I highly doubt that Paul is going to fork about ~$5k to buy a URL, lol. They're gonna be owning that for a while.

Where does the "internet" begin?
Someone somehow had to create and invent TBCS.com for that guy to register and own it right? So who did that?
Is it possible to come up with some combination of letters and/or numbers that are not registered to anyone and just "stake a claim" ?
Anytime you punch in a website that doesn't "exist" it says this is owned by so and so, please contact them to buy it. How did they get it if it doesn't exist yet?

Most domains that anyone would ever think to use have been bought. There is some "thing" that owns the internet in some aspect, and you pay them around 30 dollars a year for your internet address.
There are large companies that make tons of money just buying up possibly used internet addresses and selling them for a bit of a profit.

Thats the best ones to get the ones that don't exist yet. I have 6 of them.
Hell you could goto Godaddy.Com right now and Get IronCatSite.Com if you really wanted it. Its cheap to $8.95/Yr Plus Hosting.
Basically you just keep typing in different names until you find one you like. . thats available.

I think the questions was; "who did godaddy get those sites from?"
How did godaddy acquire them?
-Jeremy
THey registered them with ICCAN (or Icaan I forget).
Basically _anyone_ can register a site, unless someone has it already. Make up a name and use the whois database and see if it is registered yet. _Plus_ you can add the .??? to different names. Example; I own airbozo.com, because I was the first one to register it. I could also register airbozo.net, airbozo.edu (assuming I used it for educational purposes), etc...

I was trying to get qa domain name once, but everything I tried was apparently registered, and for sale. In desperation I started trying just random crap, dragging my fingers along the keyboard.
Stuff like:
www.asldfikogujhgvliksudjfchtfgjoilkesdujfchgcvf.c om
registered, for sale.
Yeah, right.

I have seen similar things, based on the site you go to search. Some sites offer free whois lookups, but on the back end they are keeping track of what people search for and sometimes you will get the info above (trying to sell you a domain) when it really is not registered to anyone. I have also heard of a couple of sites that monitor the most popular lookups, then register them, then turn around and try to sell them to you.

Exactly. There's lots still out there. Even short ones if you don't mind something maybe a bit random with a mix of numbers and letters: www.u8ty.com or www.9rse.com (arse.com) are available
as is www.4ell.com (hell.com) .. go and buy em right now for under $10 and they are yours for the year or until you don't pay your renewal fees.
Some people in the very early days of the net got rich registering all of coca-colas domains internationally and selling them on to them ... then a bunch of cowboys bought anything that moved to get in on the rush ... which is why you see so many "parked for sale" domains around.
But the prices are rubbish .. $4,000+ dollars yeah ... last time I enquired about a domain they started at $3,450 and I had them down to $800 in a day and $600 in a week but I wasn't budging over $400 so we never dealt.
Domain registration is something of a wild west basically with the exception of certain top level registrars that demand proof of residency/business name etc. But thats rare.
CrazyB
ps www.nameroute.com are excellent registrars ... not the cheapest but certainly none of the dirty tricks noted above going down.

Some of the laws in place now prevent domain squatting. Basically if a company has enough legal clout (ie. pepsi, coke, Apple), they can appeal to the international registrar and take away a domain name. Case in point; There used to be a site called www.frys.com that had _nothing_ to do with electronics. The guy actually sold french fry vending machines. OK so he was not that successful but he was trying. Along came Fry's Electronics (did anyone know Fry's _used_ to be a grocery store?), and basically took the domain from the guy since he was not interested in selling it. They used the trademark infringement tact to steal it away.

Looking at their website I wouldn't be so sure although perhaps you have someone in mind. They may have purchased it as a holding bet on a four letter name (short domain names have inherent value) or even for a client or particular project that died.
Do you have a trademark on "TBCS"? If so have you also registered it on this side of the pond? If yes to both I expect they would let you have it for next to nothing to avoid potential litigation.
And no .. you don't need the name ... search google for TBCS (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=TBCS&btnG=Google+Search) and this site is third on the list which is plenty high. Although I noticed www.paulcapello.com redirects here ;)

Edit: yep they had that name since: Dates: Created 03-dec-1999 and they bought a ten year registration back then so I think they have just had it on the shelf for years after all.

From the site:::
If you or your organization own any registered
trade mark relating to the above name or any other names Get On The Web Limited has registered, or if you represent
or know of any such organization, kindly inform us as soon as possible.
So that's an option.
Another option is that we pay up, with LEDs.
10 LEDs to the dollar.
Hook-up a couple of batteries to power all those 47,500 LEDs for a short 3 second burst.
Place all LEDs pointing upwards, towards the opening of the box.
Trip switch with the box's opening...
Blind the **** out of the dude.
Or etch "TBCS pWnd U n00b" in his retinas' cortex.

IIRC, the text "Offers news and current projects conerning case alteration." is sourcing from the Open Directory project. You can ask nicely to have it changed but it can take awhile.
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35264
Google's creation of sites' titles and descriptions (or "snippets") is completely automated and takes into account both the content of a page as well as references to it that appear on the web. While we're unable to manually change titles or snippets for individual sites, please be assured that we're always working to make them as relevant as possible.
One source we use to generate snippets is the Open Directory Project. You can direct us not to use this as a source by adding a meta tag to your pages.

Nope .. that's not a typo from Google .. it's a typo in the DMOZ entry for this website that is propogating through to google and elsewhere.
http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Components/Cases/
Edit the URL info there (you can do it from that page) and pretty quickly Google and anyone else who takes their descriptive info about the site from DMOZ will say what you want it to say :)
CrazyB
Edit Mach posted ^^^^^^ while this was being typed. Though you can ask Google to change things if you change your DMOZ info that will change more quickly.

Fastest resolution of this issue: add a metatag to all the forum pages. Also worth editing the DMOZ entry as that propogates elsewhere through the internet:
From google (http://diagnostics.googlerankings.com/dmoz-snippets.html)
Known issues
DMOZ uses descriptions of the editors who accept the web sites into the directory. Although the submitted wording may be taken into consideration, it is up to the administrators of the OpenDirectory project to rephrase the description. ..... (cut)
+ Resolution: Should you feel discontent with the description, and/or worried about the same snippets throughout all results for your web pages, a single META HTML tag on every page will overrule the DMOZ description, and from the next time your pages are crawled, will show the lines from the META description tags unique to that page. The proper syntax of the NOODP tag may have different variations, in general, an HTML tag placed in the HEAD section of the pages will be recognized by both Googlebot and Yahoo Slurp. <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP"> is a directive for all web crawling bots, while <META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOODP"> is a directive for Googlebot only.

There is a metatag on all the forum pages that currently keeps us in the top 3 of pretty much any Modding related search. Although fixing the typo will probably not make a damn bit of difference to this, I'm currently too busy with other things to alter it.
If one of the other grease-monkeys wants to go find the meta-tags and correct the spelling, I stress the importance of not changing anything else in there.

Dave - It is not an existing meta-tag on these pages creating this issue and no existing metatag needs be changed. Adding one new metatag into the header for these pages:
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">
Will solve 95% of the problem - see above. Correcting the DMOZ entry will correct the other 5% in time.
It looks unprofessional on google or anywhere, be you in the top or the bottom three, if your snippet contains a typo. More importantly if that ^^ meta tag is added, Google will revert to using the content of this sites Meta Description tag:
"The Ultimate in Computer Case Mods for Collectors and PC Case Mod Enthusiasts"
rather than:
"Offers news and current projects conerning case alteration."
So if that is how you/Paul want Google and other web search engines to describe TBCS add the new metatag and be sure the existing description one is how you want the site described. Next time google crawls, problem solved.

Dear Dave
I am not suggesting you do it personally. I am making sure the information in this thread is correct so if someone wants to do it they achieve the aim and not something else.
I just wanted to clarify that as it seems to me you may be mistaking my constructive efforts as personal criticism which they are not. I know there was some friction between our positions on the "polite request thread" but as far as I am concerned that is over and done.
As I said to someone in a PM recently I have +repped you and laughed at too many things you have said to be carrying a chip on my shoulder, so I want to be sure you are not mistaking my efforts to help clarify matters and their solution as in any way personally directed at you, which they are not.
