8-bit Super Mushroom
Hi, and welcome to my second case mod! Just so you know a little bit about my mod style is that I like to make 8-bit wooden computer cases. Right now I only have 2 but I am looking to increase that hopefully.
I took a good amount of pictures on my way through when I was working on this mod but I also recorded the whole construction in a time-lapse video for viewers to see. The video is at the end of the log.
My Goals for the mod:
Create a HTPC with keeping it minimal. With this in mind I ended up not skipping out on the dvd drive and only running 1 fan in the case. Also I only used 4 screws to keep the motherboard in place. Everything else is held in by wooden cubes. :D
So I have:
-ZOTAC GF9300 Mini-itx board
-C2Q Q8200
-9800 Energy Efficient card
-4gb of RAM
-640GB HDD
-1 Fan
So here are the pics
This is the bottom of the mod and where I started. Since I am running with one fan at the back I have holes in the bottom to draw air in underneath the motherboard. The case is raised an inch off the ground to allow air in.
This is with the motherboard in place
Loose blocks to get an idea of the position of the motherboard and fan
Bottom of the head with the eyes in front
Top of the mushrooms dome getting started
The power button (will be flat when not pressed)
Getting close to the final body
Same, but closer
And the final shape from the front
Final shape of the mod from the back
Front again with death eyes (This did not make it in the final build as I used opal stain glass for the eyes. I was unable to get a bright enough LED to make the eyes light up past the stain glass)
The dome is removable in case I need to get a hand inside. This is all the components in place. No screws hold anything other than the motherboard. Everything else is in place by wood cubes :D
Got some paint on it:
With the flash on the camera it makes the case look a little fake :D
Heres the back of the case with paint
Naked insides (Warning: XXX material for modders)
Heres the power button on top:
Next to my other 8-bit mod, The Black Mage:
And me sitting in between the mods to give them perspective of size
Here's the time-lapse video of the whole build process:

Re: 8-bit Super Mushroom
Cool stuff, your really onto something with the 8 bit theme :), I really liked your black mage case and this mushroom is looking great, I imagine it will look very awesome when finished, I mean it already looks awesome but will be even better once painted :).
And a quote from the mushroom in mario kart "I'm the best" in a high pitched voice :D.

Re: 8-bit Super Mushroom
You mentioned that the mushroom's eyes are black, and you couldn't get LEDs to shine past it.
Have you tried using plexiglass? Get clear plexi, sand one side so its matte-like finish, and paint the other side black (or whatever color you want). And then get LEDs to shine from the side, which should hit the matte surface and shine.
