First Mod Blue Flame

Just thought id post some pics of the case that I made for a competition last year. Was my first build.

I didnt quiet get everything finished in time for the event, would have liked to clean up the wires alot more and stealthed the dvd drive.

The basic idea of the case was to have everything in the case to make it easy to move things round… this would have been good if the thing didn’t end up weighing so much :P The two 17 inch lcd’s folded back inside the case then the case closed.

Sorry about the pics.. they aren’t very good but I didn’t have many to choose from. BTW ignore the dates on the photos. The camera must have been set wrong.

How do the monitors fold away? Are then on hinges, so that they just slide in, or do you have do a little bit of dismantelling to get it to fold away? Another question: what's in each half of the case?

Unfortunately there are only a few more pics of this case around. At the time I built it I didn’t really have a decent digital camera so we only took a few pics at home and the rest are from the event. I would gladly take more to show you… but I don’t have the case anymore.

Shortly after the competition I removed all the hardware from the case and put it back in my normal case as it was more practical for use around home. So the case was just sitting there doing nothing and would most likely have stayed that way for a while because as I mentioned it turned out very heavy and wasn’t that practical. So with a bit of pressure from mum the case was taken apart, the useful bits were kept and the rest are gone.

Ill explain a little more about the case and hopefully answer any questions so far.

To start with the main idea/goal of the case was to have everything I needed in one case so I only had to carry one thing (turned out to be one massive heavy thing but oh well) but another reason was because one of the criteria the cases were judged on was if it included other parts of the computer, well I thought it should be pretty sweet for that considering it includes every part of the system. Blue and silver are my favorite colors so naturally the case had to use those and flames are always cool so that’s how the case got its paint scheme. I drew a basic plan up on the computer to make sure everything was going to fit and then the rest was done as I went along.

All the panels were made from 3mm acrylic which was painted on the inside using polycarbonate paints for R/C car bodies. This was an easy way to get the lovely shine which looks like it took hours to achieve as the 3mm of acrylic pretty much acted like a massive clear coat. The paint work still took about 5 or so hours and was done about two days before the event (not something I ever want to do again).

The monitors are kind of hard to explain (I never was good at English at school) so instead ill draw a few pics tonight and post them which should hopefully explain how it works… its simple but hard to describe.

To put it simply looking from the front of the computer the left side contains pretty much everything and the right almost nothing. In a bit more detail the left has PSU, mother board, hard drive, DVD drive. Floppy drive (not quiet sure why) and a few pretty lights oh and of course a 17inch LCD. The right side has… yep another 17inch LCD… not much of a surprise there, the receiver/charging stand for my mouse (Logitech MX1000) The docking stand/charger for my phone (didn’t really want that in there but the phone battery only lasts about a day) , headphones, 10m network cable, a few cd’s and some more pretty lights.

Most of the parts for the case were made by me, only thing I didn’t do was the initial cutting of the inner frame as it was much easier and more accurate to get that cut at dads work. All in all there was about 200 or so hours work involved to get everything done to what you see in the pictures. This was spread out over a period of about 100ish days, with of the standard mad rush at the end where every spare moment is spent on it.

There are probably a lot of things I would have changed or done better or just done to it if I had more time but as it was It got me second place so I can live with that.
