Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Rods & Mods
The Exploratorium wants to display YOUR case mods, restored computers, and cool hardware hacks on February 11, 12, and 13, 2010.
Hello Modders,
Has your passion for Jules Verne, Star Wars, or mid-century modernism manifested itself as an eye-catching disguise for your machine? Did your need for speed lead you to overclock your multi-fanned, heat-sinked, water-cooled processor? Ever sewn a computer into clothing, or built one into a tree? Is your restored Apple Lisa or Amiga your greatest treasure?
If you hack, restore, or reinvent computers, enjoy talking about your passion, and live in the Bay Area, the Exploratorium wants to hear from you. Like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and those of the 1960s counterculture car movement, you refuse to settle for “factory-made.” By adapting technology to your personal vision, you and other modders have ultimately changed the ways computers look and perform today. To share your stories and to show off your stuff, we are hosting a 3-day festival on February 11, 12, and 13, 2010.
If you are interested in participating, please send your contact info, an image and brief description of your computer, along with details of any special requirements you would have, to Marcus Ante at mante (at) exploratorium (dot) edu.
Housed within the walls of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of hundreds of science, art, and human perception exhibits and programs. For more info, visit exploratorium dot edu.
Thanks!
Marcus

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
This makes me want to move to the bay so bad. Well, this and maker faire and my brother lives there, and lots of good startup companies are there. It's just so darned expensive.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
There are places in the bay area that are affordable. Not many though. One would have thought that this recent recession would have dropped some of the prices a bit but not true.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
oh man....now I gotta finish my case. I live in southern CA but my whole family lives near San Francisco...
only question is how long is the display and can I go without my compy for that long?
*EDIT**
3 days. I can handle that. Just emailed the guy...and I think this is the necessary fire-under-my-rear I need to finish this thing :P

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Good deal.
Can't wait to see it!
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Anyone in the bay area want to do a TBCS group visit?
Anyone want to have their case on display there? I can personally handle setting it up.
I am going to call them later and ask some questions and see if we can have a TBCS contingency there.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I've already emailed him, but definitely count me in on the group thing if possible. I'll pm you my contact info.

You can most likely count me in. Meet up with some of the fellow TBCSers
Party at Airbozo's after!

I would rather die than go to SF

I usually stay away from SF except for the yearly Cypress Hill Concert at the Fillmore and events like this. But otherwise I feel the same.

California is not that bad compared to most states so long as you stay away from certain cities. In general I have fewer complaints about this state than any others I have lived in or visited. It is certainly one of the more beautiful states. That said, I absolutely avoid socal as best I can.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Lived there a while, never wanna go back.

Hehe, that is what I said about socal... I was ready to leave the state and figured I would give norcal a try. Totally different place. If I didn't live so close to the coast I would probably feel different. No if we can get this political mess fixed. Woops. political comment, better quiet down...
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Amazingly, I'll keep my mountains and red dirt.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
aw c'mon guys, what's wrong with socal? actually, since I'm a norcal native, I was afraid to move down here for my job (4 years ago). I thought...man I don't wanna live in LA. But I've found that the Agoura Hills/Thousand Oaks area is actually really nice...if a bit dull and wealthy. It's NOTHING like the overcrowded smogged up LA basin. If anything it feels sorta like the Stanford/Palo Alto area (and if there were more trees I'd include Los Gatos/Saratoga in that assessment). Besides, where else in CA can you experience Christmas Day @ 80 degrees?
I've come to really like it down here, but my girlfriend and I still look forward to the day when we're able to move back north. I love visiting San Francisco, the stretch of beach between Fort Point and Pier 39 is one of my favorite areas anywhere, but I don't think I'd want to live in SF. Not really a big city person.

Alas I miss the REAL mountains of Colorado. These silly bumps they call the Santa Cruz Mountains just don't measure up to the Rockies...

wow! Awesome way to go off topic and inject some negative feeling to an otherwise upbeat thread.
Back on topic, If your mod is displayed in this show please send me a PM with a photo or two of it on display and we will do a write up on it for the front page. If someone goes who is on staff please email me photos and take some notes if awards are given.

Working on it now. They thought I was begging for a press pass...

No, I was trying to see if it was possible to have the TBCS logo on the mods from our members (assuming that is OK with our members) and if we could help promote this event somehow. Total mis-communication on both sides. Gong to try again tomorrow. Anything I should ask or mention?
Who wants to send their case? Paul? Doom3 up for another west coast adventure?
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Yea if they will allow our logo on the mods (with our members permissions) We could do a pre event front page type thing.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I don't mind springing for personalized business cards for each member who will represent TBCS, sounds like a fun gather and I really wish I could go. That is where I met Paul Capello and Terry (a.k.a. Airbozo) a few years ago, well actually San Mateo but it's pretty close. Wonder if we could drag Doom3 away from Paul for a couple of days.... ;)

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Hi All,
It's great to hear you guys express some interest!
Just to answer some questions:
We would love to have your case mods displayed from Thursday, Feb 11, 2010 to Saturday, Feb 13, 2010.
It won't be a problem at all to have your logo on your mods. Maybe we can even set up a TBCS corner somewhere in the museum (definitely a possibility).
Feel free to contact me at: mante (at) exploratorium (dot) edu
Thanks!
Marcus

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I can't make it, but this has me wondering...if I were to ship a casemod to Terry...
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
If someone is willing to take one of mine . . . maybe I can get the case part of the NES PC finished. Shouldn't be hard at all.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
Thanks for the update Marcus, I hope we can get some exciting builds together for the show!

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I emailed Marcus yesterday morning (before any discussion of a group of us going came up) and he got back to me. I'm going to send him my contact info, etc., but I'll also let him know that I'm part of this group. Here's the info he wanted from me:
Name:
Handle/Nickname:
Name of piece:
Description of piece:
City/Town:
Phone:
Special Requirements for Display:
The show will be happening for 3 days (Feb 11, 12, and 13) What days of the event can you be physically present to interact with visitors?
now to figure out where to incorporate the TBCS logo....maybe I'll draw it in sand under the crawler LOL

Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I am thinking about coming out for the event, also text messaged Paul to ask about getting him out there. We'll see.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I hope to have Moe's Tavern done in time.
-
Re: Rods & Mods: Display your Case Mod at the Exploratorium
I'd love to see it! I kinda wish I had some inkling if I could finish my Rivendell mod for the show, but since all I have right now is a pile of computer parts, I rather doubt I could pull it off in a month.

We are coordinating this now. I work in San Jose and may have the out of area systems shipped to my company and then bring them up. I will let you know Monday for sure. I am going to send you an email with my contact info.

Let me know if you need help moving them, etc. I'm just outside of Sacramento so it's not too bad of a drive to help out TBCS

Any chance on Season one going to DVD?
