Re: Starting a modding contest!!!
right. ive got some things figured out, and ill go with them for now. suggestions are still welcome though.
first, the points scheme:
LABOUR- 30pts (26.1%)
FINISHING- 10pts (8.7%)
COORDINATION/CONTINUITY- 10 pts (8.7%)
ORIGINALITY- 10 pts (8.7%)
EFFECT- 10pts (8.7%)
ORGANIZATION- 10pts (8.7%)
WRITING- 5pts (4.3%)
COOLING (option)- 10pts (8.7%)
LIGHTING (option)- 10 pts (8.7%)
PRACTICAL/THEORETICAL FUNCTIONALITY- 10pts (8.7%)
TOTAL- 115pts
there will also be FOUR categories: Beginner, Experienced, Advanced, and Master. ill grade a little harder and be more meticulous at each level.
next, rules:
pretty simple really. submit pictures and a write up of a modded case by the deadline specified.
this time around, i think ill accept any mods that are done in time (meaning ANY mod no matter when it was done), and ill keep the deadline at august 15. for future ones, the deadline will be three months from announcement, and all mods submitted should be done in that time, no earlier and no later of course.
there may or may not be suggested themes. i dont want to do that because it may hinder creativity. on the other hand, if demand is high enough for something in particular, i will suggest a theme.
the write up should just be a walk-through of the mod. you can mention features in particular, or you can outline major events in the course of the mod, or you can explain the theme. anything goes really. the word limit will be at least 200 words, and there is no upper limit. you can write as much as you want if need be.
ill state this for the third time too. make sure you mention something if you want me to make a note of it. if you put a lot of work into a fan grill but it doesnt show very well, tell me that i should pay attention to it, and possibly provide a picture focussing on it.
and lastly for now, how do you submit:
you can submit to me by PM, or by msn, whichever works for you. give me everything, the write up, the pictures, and ill sort it out. just put "mod entry" as the subject. ive put my msn address on my profile now, but ill put it here too.
mike1507011987@hotmail.com
when all submissions are in and graded, i will make a new thread in the chatterbox entitled "TBCS mod contest" and ill add spring or fall or the name of the theme so you know which one it is. ill put each entry in its own post, highlight some features, and include a score.
to keep things rather orderly, submission will start one week before the deadline, and will close one day after. im not going to be a dick and disqualify for being a little late.
so that is what i have right now. i think its a good start. ill take any suggestion now. this went a little faster than i expected, but thats good because this is apparently going to be announced on the front page and i think ill do a little write up to be included in the announcement. that will take a little time, but keep a look out for it.
and start spreading the word. anyone and everyone here who has recently finished a mod or who has started one and can be done by august 15th. anyone from another forum who wants to enter is welcome, but of course they need to sign up first. the one or two people we have right now is not a very good showing.
Re: Starting a modding contest!!!
Sounds marvelous. I'll post it on P-Team and CMG. Somebody else can take GruntvillE and [H]ardOCP.
Re: Starting a modding contest!!!
Are there going to be more judges? I think it would be fair to have at least 3 or more judges, so you can rule out 'personal opinion' (not that I don't trust you slug, but I think it's fair...)
I would like to rate some cases, BUT I would also like to enter this contest, and I believe it is then not allowed to be a judge... but for the next rounds I can be judge if you want me to...
One small little question though: Are you going to find some sponsors or something? Maybe you can get a sponser to give you a little prize. I mean, the stickers are a nice start, but if you can get bigger prizes it would be nice. Also one could then award prizes for more people...

sure, why not. i think butcher might want to be one if hes got the stickers and such. anyone who wants to volunteer, just say so. one thing i would like to ask though is that the judges have some scientific knowledge behind them, and mod experience. for instance, ill be assessing cooling using a few simple principles of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, as well as for visual appeal. any mod work will be assessed keeping in mind what type of material it is.... and i specialize in metals, so i definitely know what it takes in that area.
so basically, anyone who wants to be a judge can be, but it would be great if you have some useful knowledge.

that would be a good idea. i really dont know where to go for sponsors though. even though i fiddle with computers, im not in the scene enough to be making contacts all over the place. i DO have a few computer stores in the area that i could pick up parts from as prizes, but i really dont have a lot of spare money... its in bonds and stuff like that. if someone can find me a sponsor, ill definitely send an email or two.

that could happen. the beginner level would get a slightly lesser prize than the master level. this may encourage lots of interesting work if there is reason to really go over the top.
ive got a couple things to work out still. got the "official" announcement to prep for, but ill try and get through this stuff ASAP.
Re: Starting a modding contest!!!
Sounds cool, wouldn't mind judging myself have a little bit of knowledge on cooling, but visual would be my area really, i know what a pain acrylic(perspex, plexi) can be after working with it in school and cutting it with a dremel.
If you want i could post on [H]ard Forums
If you need any graphics i could get some done :P
Re: Starting a modding contest!!!
I would gladly be a judge. I have expertise in acrylic and plastics, airbrushing and painting, and water cooling. I also have a good idea of pretty much everything else involving modding, those are just a few things I really specialize in.

I like all of the catagories, but feel the Labour could be subjective. For instance I can rewire and hide almost any cable in my sleep, but am really a noob to the case modding and painting, whereas some people would be stumped with what to do with extra drive cables, but plexi windows and a custom paint job are easier for others.
That said I do stand by the criteria you set. It will make for an interesting competition. I will NOT be able to finish my mod by the time limit so I will not be able to participate in this round (still trying to figure out some math involving a plexi sphere. Think bubble gum machine computer...oops I said too much!:D ). I would like to volunteer my services as a judge...

unfortunately, the labour area WILL be subjective to a certain degree. theres no way around it... things will be easier for certain people, and will seem easy to some judges. theres a benefit of having more than one judge.....
speaking of judges. like i said, anyone who wants to be one is in right now. i think ill have to slightly modify the method by which judging happens though. i think now what ill do is start the new thread, post each submission, and then the judges can make posts with their take on everything. and it would be nice if nobody else posts until all judges give their verdicts. ill still organize all the submissions, is that alright?
lets see... judges right now are me, airbozo, tybrenis, scotty and butcher im hoping. thats five.... any more? i think five is enough, but more is good.

sure, we can use all the exposure possible right now.

are we talking about photoshop graphics? i suppose we could use a graphic for the very first post (kind of like an intro graphic for the contest). if you want to do that, send me a PM or an email so we can figure out something that looks cool.
<EDIT> gt40_gearhead just signed on as a judge too.
