ou ou and me, i'm still in :D
I am new to modding, but not to contest's If you going to get a sponser you are going to have to make it worth their time and money. for example require the use of a product such as a fan, water cooler, video card, mobo, or sound card. Or you could make them display the companies name and colors in a visible spot for advertising. You will also need to show that it will have exposer. and since that would be hard to do an entry fee
If you relly want a prize I would sugest entry fee/ prize :
beginner $1 -- prize 80% in entry money
advanced $2 -- prize 90% of entry money
expert $3 -- prize 100% of entry money +20 % of beginner money + 10 % of advanced money
this would incourage people to be honest with the fact that their are the level they say they are.
but then you would have to ensure that who ever is in charge of the money doesn't run off with it-- not calling you a thief slug i just don't know you.
just a suggestion take it or leave it:)
i dont think slug would run with the money, that is not the problem, the problem is that by puting an entry fee, whe exclude people, some ar from the US or Canada or UK..., puting that fee makes their life harder
entry fee = not a good idea
like GT 40 said there are people from outside the US, and the payment _will_ go wrong... too much paperwork...
I'm still in though, prize or no prize...
yup, i dont think the fee is a good move. i sure wouldnt pay to join a contest, so i wouldnt expect anyone else to. it DOES make business sense, but i dont do business, i do fun.
just an update about the prize situation. i finally have some interested people. i dont want to say more than that right now, but at least i got someones attention. it could mean that i would need to break off and start an independent site to simplify sponsor associations and affiliations, but thats only if i can make something happen.
imagine that... me in charge of a website... thats a scary thought.
ill join in the contest.....sounds like fun
I would be willing to sponsor a prize, like maybe a decent little graphics card (or better yet possibly a liquid cooling system) or something of that nature. Maybe a gig of ram or something. I'm not sure exactly what, tho.
I'd want to give something that ppl who modded could use, b/c many would have g/c's and cooling products already. So what are some good ideas for useful prizes? (and it could't be like a whole system or anything -keep costs in mind, here.)
But of course there would be quid pro quo as well, as all sponsors get. I'm thinking... hmmm. Well, I don't know, I'll think of something fun.
But the mod contest should have some type of structure, -possibly more than just amateur/ prof classes. It would be a big help for modders to have guidelines or even a theme (poss. guidelines like internals optional, etc. and possible themes like mechanical automation or whatever -or if there were enough entries you could have different areas for each -I would be willing to supply more than 1 prize).
One thing a contest needs to be successful is a baseline of contestants. Like you said, 2 entries do not a contest make. There really needs to be a number of entries to justify the entire deal. That said, the deadline for this first one is (imho) a little soon for a good run. I mean, it was June 20something and you still didn't have much advert. or prizes up. Whynot a little more time to put the whole shebang together, for word to get out so ppl can submit, and maybe there'll be more entries, and I'd feel better about donating the prizes if there were a number of 'em.
PS- If I donate the prizes, then of course I won't judge.
LMK how things are going, and if its all still in the works.
wow, talk about generous. are you really willing to supply prizes? no kidding?
as far as i know things are still looking good. ive asked everyone to hold off submitting until the 8th, so we'll see what happens then. i think the interest is there.
i would agree that for future contest there should be some structure. ill probably put it to a vote each time and go with the most popular idea. for this one time around though... well if you read the entire thread you would see that this whole thing had a lot of turmoil around and the fact that im in charge is kind of a good accident. it isnt quite coordinated enough yet to start throwing out themes, and there was only about a month timeframe for this after everything was said and done. not enough time to do anything really. i think things will work for future ones though, i like the semi-official system im running on, it seems to be keeping things organized although it kills my head on a regular basis.
by all means though, you dont have to not judge unless you really dont think its fair. ive got a few judges signed up and in waiting, but now i cant remember who... we can always use one more judge to get a better spread for averaging.
and quid pro quo? im not up on my latin... but i would assume that means "i do something for you, you do something for me". im fine with that, but i cant speak for everyone else. just name it when you think of it and ill see what i can do.
So you guys know, we are planning on having a lot more official TBCS contests coming up pretty soon, with prizes and everything. If anyone wants to help with prizes, sponsorship, any of that, please contact me or DaveW.
Woah Dave generous :D Ive been helping Slug Toy a bit but being in the UK and he's US its not that easy :S
