Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
... I don't know the first thing about case modding. But I can say that this may just be an inspiration into the first mod that I may, or at least want to do.
Could one maybe do this style of frosting to say a clear acrylic case? Or would it come out completely different... maybe I should post this on the noob board...
I FEEL SO ASHAMED!!!!!!!

Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
Cheers guys :)
Caboose, i think a frosted case could have an awsome effect!!!...i think some of the newer cases tho arn't tru acryl? so not sure how sounding thm goes?
This is the continuation of the front panel idea. i had originaly made 3 light fins the top one will act as the door for the cdrom.
These were all made from 10mm thick plex cut then hand shaped.
The problem was, the top one bearly covered the cdrom hole.
Was time to craft a bigger unit !!!
This is a massive chunck of plex! @ near 20mm x 20mm this was not easy to bend into shape 5 mins of solid hot air gun had it like rubber.
It was then lay'd over the from of HP3's front and left to cool down and go hard again.
Clamping the plex to the bench and using the dremal to knock the corners off.
40 minutes of hand sanding and the new door is taking shape.
a quik test to see that it covers the cdrom opening
and its back for some more hand sanding
after another 20 minutes the peice is almost at the right shape.
some work is done to the matching middle strip
and the 3 peices wrk from large to small ...the larger veing the cdrom door the smaller 2 being for balance and athestics.

Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
the thicker top plex contour will have to attach to the cdcrom door , for this a custom extension block is needed.
the block will act as the spacer between the new cdrom door and the cdrom tray itself.
The block is shaped to suit the conture of the new plex door
and a qick mock up is done to see all is goin to plan.
As seen above the new cdrom door has now been sanded with finer gritt paper and has a smooth frost look.
The spacer block is to be left clear and not frosted, holes are added to help lighten the load and to add some asthectics.
This new unit is not to be attached to the cdrom tray to become one.
Holes are drilled in the tray
matching holes are also drilled into the connecting block
Threaded using a 5/32 fine tap
the whole unit is then bolted together using hex head SS bolts.

Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
I was wondering what ever happened to this astonishing piece of work.
Defyant, you truly make all this look far too easy. Very, very, very nice work.

Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
thanx guys :) yer the Storm's come and gone! :P time to get back to
HP goodness.
With the cdrom in this now add as the joiner between the tray and the new plex door.
The front door will be eventually attached after painting of the case and a special "silicon strip of double sided clear plex tape " will be used to hold it in place.
The end look will be the 3 plex contours sitting spaced evenly and dual lit.
it does feel good to be modding this case again! :)

Re: Hp Res 3 Mega
5/32? Thats the same thread type as hard disk and case screws isn't it? I've been hunting high and low for some longer screws, preferably hex-head to mount a PSU on a thicker case (see Project: Sentinel and can't find any anywhere - can you let me know where you got them. I'm in the UK but I have several friends in the US who'd be more than happy to get them for me and post them over - I only need 3 lol
