Nothing to update....R2's pretty disappointed in me too. I worked on the Projector a little, and stared at the body in the floor...But I'm toast It's too cold to paint, or glass... I do have some welding that needs done but I'm in the winter rut and I've been working late, and when you get into the welding groove you've gotta stick with it till it's done, so I'm just beeing lazy:eek: Anytime now the sun will brake through this crappy haze and I'll pound out the progress. Maybe in April I'll take a day or two off, by then I'll have the pc parts.:D You'll see some progress here soon, I've gotta get the nerve up to lay Dremel to that nice shiny alum dome, get the lines etched, and the parts that need open cut out. But all in good time....Now you see why I've been at this for 2 years!!! I plan too much and think every thing out....then when it come time to do it I just wing it anyway:eek: :D

Hey, no offence intended, but any kind of lens is going to flip the image in all directions, so you'd get it the right way around but upside down. I think you need a mirror, maybe a bit like what you'd use in a periscope? Alternatively, you could get a triangular prism to do the job. If you got a lens to do it, i think you'd mess up a couple of other things: mainly the focus at the edges.

I could be wrong, don't take my rough work as law, but i studied physics at Uni last year and i'm confident that's your problem. It shouldn't take much to fix though...

Well more of the same...Last week I was bauried @ work (other two guys I work with were on site in france), then this weekend I was sick as dog with the flu... So nothing got done on R2......I'm starting to feel better so maybe I'll get some thing done this week!

Hope you dont have the same thing I been fighting off for over a month now. Been sick off and on for over the last 2 months. So its been slow on getting some of my work done.

Well, I got back to working on R2 some this weekend. I Remade an Aluminum side box for the main Radar Eye (The Big Blue Squareish thing on his dome), I had one part way put together from close to a year ago, and was not happy with it. So I made this one up.

It sits right up beside the Eye like so

Now I just need to get some primer on it (to see if I need to fill any low spots), and the weather looks better for this weekend (32degF) so I should be able to get some primer coats on things :)

I also worked on getting the Utility Arms (The two Blue bands on the front of R2, He used them to run the Com device in EP3:ROTS) sanded down to fit.

I'll have to adjust the skin cutout's just a bit, but the Arm is ready for a skim coat of bondo (to hide the wood grain). The other arm....Well I nee to remake the "hand" section as it broke when cutting it down.

I also look At the second motor Bracket ...looks like I may have to cut it back apart and flip every thing over So the motor stick out the inside of the foot, as it doesn't fit quite right in the foot currently....I'll get pics up when I figure out how much needs to change....I'm hoping that I can just adjust a few things and not have to cut it all apart..... Oh well the best laid plans of mice and Men! :) I'm just happy that I'm not feeling like death warmed over now!!! I can get back in to R2 again!!!!

This is an awsome mod. i'm, as always on this forum, amazed.
quick question: did you solve the connection between the body and the dome, electricity-wise. i saw your gear solution but how to you manage wiring so it doesn't get tangled up when turning too many laps in one direction? Or are you going for the owl solution (turn to 180 degrees one way, then, when "midpoint back" is hit, rapidly turn 360 degrees the other way and continue the turn in the first direction)?
i know r2d2 doesn't do that, but it might ease up on the wirings.

My current Idea is to make a Slip ring. Which is simply a circuit board with circular traces on it, which will be attached to the dome. Then attach a set of spring contacts to the body, they should keep constant contact with the traces. I've not tested this yet, but have all the major parts of it and will be trying it soon.....If it doesn't work I've got a few more Ideas up my sleeve.
The very last one is solid cable from body to dome.....If it's a coiled cable you can get many 360deg turns out of the dome before you have issues....I'll just have to remember 1 right ....1 left....and so On.

How does a slip ring circuit hold up to corrosion and wear over time? I know I've seen them used, but I would think a standard PCB would wear out pretty quickly.

Thanks...It feels GOOD!!!

As for how it will hold up over time ? :? ? Not sure never made one before. I know that allot of multimeters use the same Idea in them (think Fluke with a rotory dial) and they hold up pretty well with time and moisture. If I can make it work and it doesn't last very long, we'll go to plan B....(Not sure what that is yet!)
