teach your wirless stealing neighbors a lesson.

The problem if someone has hacked your WEP "protection" is that they can easily then sniff your network traffic, look at your browsing, gather passwords ... your bank account details .... etc, etc, etc.

When they break the locks and get in your car they can steal the car and what's in it. When they break your WEP (unprotected) network they can steal whatever you are accessing and that can mean your identity, and really screw up your life. This sort of crime will increasingly be seen.

WEP is not worth the useless algorithms it is based upon

anywho, maybe MAC filtering so that non-familiar devices get flipped internet could be your last line of defense against wifi stealers. unless they're not using it to browse fleabay or anything. haha.

Hence the need for higher levels of encryption.

I am contemplating a RADIUS server at home. Also piping my internet through a VPN to Holland where privacy laws are much stricter. No one is keeping logs of my internet activity once everything is in place.

WPA2 and i dont broadcast my my SSID...

I broadcast my SSID but I use WPA2-PSK. Used to only use WEP, didn't when I managed to break into my own wireless network (majority of the old routers we had only supported WEP) but now I try to make sure we're using WPA2.

Good point Luke. Actually the service is very good.

Skype calls are still fine and that matters most to me. I ping the speedtest server in holland at about 58 ms over that service whilst the London server via my ISP is 49 ms. 20% or so deterioration for total privacy is OK by me.

I don't do online gaming so ping times are rarely critical for me anyway.

Back to the point, I used to have an SSID of CALL075492345284xs (my old phone number)

When a neighbor phoned and asked if they could use my wireless I met someone new and if they seemed OK I let them. One woman took the piss out of it completely and ate my bandwidth so google didn't work (possibly a mal-maintained bot-net machine). I kicked her off the network but anyone whose use didn't bother me was fine.

As I live on the 7th in a block and the AP was by my window the signal went a good 200 yards - I met some nice folk.

hahaha that is hilarious I love it! I don't think I have to worry much about that here though. I think most of my neighbors have pawned their computers for drug money, and the ones who actually still do have some $300 emachine from walmart sitting on their bedroom floor certainly don't have the fortitude or intelligence to crack a wifi network.
