Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
I got COD4:MW free with my video card purchase. The game plays fairly well on PC, although some things feel very console oriented about it. I never played online. I'm going to wait for MW:2 to be $20 before I get it. Of course, there's something about COD games that the price never ever drops even years later. They need to take a note from Steam. Have they read about how much more money they would make if they dropped the price by $20 sometime in the first month of relsease? To quote the article, "At 75% off, they are making 15% more money than they were at full price." Come on!!!!

I was joking on the fact that none of the console players find any faults in the game, when a vocal portion of the PC gamer community is upset.

I know they've taken a lot of crap for that and the removal of the console, but outside of multiplayer, does it really matter? OOC, is there anything about MW2 that you didn't like other than the multiplayer changes?
It looks nice, but if I'm going to drop 53USD for it the single player must be excellent and multiplayer better be decent (from what I've heard that is not the case at the moment).

The vast majority of the development time and money for a game like, well, most FPSs, is spent on the SP campaign (also the graphics engine, if they make their own), not on the MP. I mean, if that's all those people wanted it for, that's fine, but that's their choice.
I'm not sure if that's the case lately, especially if Yahtzee (of Zero Punctuation fame) is to be believed. On the other hand, MW2 is not like Battlefield 2142, which is a multiplayer only game. And yes, I was going to get MW2, until the multiplayer SNAFU, now I'll wait until it hits the 20USD to 30USD price range.

Well, I will say the SP is definitely excellent. I can't comment on the MP for previously stated reasons though.

If you think about it just in terms of development and production costs, the SP is always gonna have more time and money put into it. Think about it; once you have the graphics engine, and all the player/weapon/environment/etc objects created, you just have to make some maps, make the rules for the various MP scenarios, and bam, you've got MP. With SP, you have to make more maps, then populate them with NPCs, create an AI engine for said NPCs (those two could also apply for MP if you have bots, but really...how many MP games have been done that had bots but didn't have an SP mode), create a story and script, hire voice-actors, do cut-scenes to develop that story, think up interesting challenges/gameplay mechanics for the player so it's not just a run and shoot thing (ok, so I guess that one could apply to MP as well). Other than the Battlefield, Unreal Tournament, Quake, and CS games, I can't think of any franchises that are solely MP..and two of those are offshoots of SP games.
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
It is basically from a money/marketing perspective. These games are made in cycles. You need to release product in the downtime between Infinity Ward games so you get Treyarch to run an alternative cycle. It keeps momentum up and keeps the Call of Duty brand in the spotlight. Even if they game isn't well recieved by the hardcore FPS community they will bank on the brand and people will flock to buy it to have something to play between Infinity Ward releases.
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
MW2 is one of the only games I have bought on release date. It was discounted at Fry's for $44.95. I love the game so far, but the single player campaign is too short. I beat it in 3 nights.
I have played a few of the SPec-ops missions and am looking forward to playing the with a friend. I wish you could hook up with the Xbox live crowd though.
So far I have not heard anything about the multiplayer snafu. What is the issue?
As far as cycling the developers, most company's do it to make sure they stay on schedule. They may also have a contract with Treyarch that dictates how many titles they have to produce.
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
you on PC or PS3 Airbozo? I'm on PC and always lookin for people to play MP with. I also beat the single player in 3 nights, but damn was it fun!

I am on the PC (the only other gaming system is the Wii that rarely gets played. It is Hockey season and when the wife is home, hockey is on...).
I am a member of the TBCS Steam community with a screen name of: what else: Airbozo. If I am on, invite me in. I have to relax the setup of my router. I will try that tonight.
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
The main problem with MP (especially if you don't have a good connection) is ping. And trust me, ping a is HUGE thing. With dedicated servers, normally you hire a VPS or something like that with a lot of bandwidth and then everyone gets a near constant ping to the server.
With listen servers(or pretty much P2P servers), the ping can be a lot more varible depending on the connection (like someone else on your network surfing the web). What I've seen so far is a lot of people are getting fairly high pings while the host is getting a major advantage (Don't understand why? It's because the game is running on the host's machine which means the host doesn't get lag), this is mainly due to most connections only have a single 1Mbps upload.
The other problem is if the host leaves, it take a couple of minutes for the game to decide who will be the new host.
Another reason why the multiplayer is crap, hackers. The IWNet which they introduced was also meant to reduce hackers. The community told them that this doesn't work. The community was right, and there has been hacks made very quickly for MW2. And because there is no admins, people have to either put up with it or leave.
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
Well looks like I will have to play with you guys sometime as I accidentally bought it on steam. No, not "accidentally", seriously lol.
I've always done this thing, kindof like online window shopping, where I put the item in my cart, then go all the way to right before clicking the last button to order. Usually that's quite a few screens. 99.9% of the time I can convince myself I either don't want it, don't need it, etc. It's just a method I've used to avoid useless purchases. It usually works.
Well, steam had my information already stored and set to go from last time when the $2.50 tf2 deal was on and I bought one for each of my brothers.
Anyway, one click to put it in the cart, and apparently what I thought would bring me to before I put my card stuff in/choose paypal/etc turned out to be a straight up purchase lol. I was like "Ohhh Ooooo" lmfao when it popped up and said "thank you for your purchase".
So ya. I'll have to play with you guys. lmfao
Re: Call of Duty series....WTF Activision?!?!?!
hahaha thats awesome. well not really, kinda sucks but at least the game is a good one and not something stupid! haha
