Well, you could try doing a two color base, then do thinned washes. It's rather easy. First basecoat is a little darker than your final. Use coarse sea salt as a mask for the second color. Drop it in place to simulate worn, chipped paint. Spray it slightly with a water mist and allow to dry. Then airbrush your final color coat.
Drybrushing: Take a highlight color you want to use over a darker color. Use a fairly wide brush. Fill the brush, then knock off most of the paint on a paper towel. The brush should end up barely sticky. Scrub over the areas you want to highlight. The slight amount of paint will attach to the edges and high parts.
Washes: Get some oil paint. Brown and black work best, but for your model a dark blue would also be good. Get some Testor's brush cleaner. Add a little bit of paint to a lot of cleaner. Brush this down the sides of the model with a wide brush. Allow it to sit in cracks and depressions. Make the model nice and streaky.
Some pretty simple processes to try out. They really add to the depth and detail of a paint job.
And if you have any questions about any of those processes, let me know and I'll work up a demo for you.
that's mostly the same techniques i've read about with weathering model trains. but i never heard of the sea salt trick for paint chips, that's just cool. i would like to see a more in depth write up about that part.
I have thought of doing this several times, but always thought the tiny size would make it too annoying to work with
There are a variety of salt sizes. Coarse sea salt would be best at his scale, but some table salt can be thrown in too. There are also other masking mediums as well.
Another option is to pre-shadow under the paint. Airbrush black along panel lines. It will show through the final paint coats.
Hey! Thanks for the tips!
I have messed up the EURISKO with airbrushing so I am extremely carefull now. (although this is hard plastic and the EURISKO was made of depron)
I was planning on making panels on the base that will be preshaded. This is a simple enough technique for me now. But I am talking to an airbruish artist that maybe wants to do the real work.
I am practising every now and agian though, so if you could do a demo of the techniques you are talking about, that would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all, here is another update of the work that I had to do for the AT-AT!
Started work on the reservoir that needed to be placed between the legs !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2...1.jpg?w=370&h=
Heavily modified the clamp to made it fit perfectly when the I/O hood was placed.

It was really removing a mm at a time to make it fit perfectly !

Fits perfectly into the design of the AT-AT's underbelly IMO !

Cutting away all the places where ther res needed to go, left me with a large hole through which light could escape! This hasd to be fixed !

Fixed!

I modded a 10 cm ccfl to fit inside the reservoir !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2...r.jpg?w=640&h=
Just need to make a resistor setup to be able to control the amount of light emitted by the CCFL. This is just too strong ! I had to cover the whole inside of the body with alu tape to prevent light from shining through!

That was it for this update!
The video will follow soon!
LOVING where this is head!
Do not disappoint.
How about this ...
