Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
@Airbozo: I've been doing some work with the current generation NUCs for a personal project, so I'd be interested to see what you come up with. Really cool little devices, but not much in the way of aftermarket cases yet. ;)
@xpirate: Type-C and USB 3.1 will definitely be awesome, but for the majority of docking use-cases, USB 3.0 will honestly probably be plenty. I have a tablet with a USB 3.0 A connector, and have briefly experimented with "docking" it with a USB 3.0 dual-video + gigabit ethernet adapter I have. As far as I have experienced, it "just worked". The 'alternate mode' capability in USB 3.1 to, say, pass PCIe traffic, may well prove to be a game changer, but IMO, the answer lies less in increasing the size of the pipe between the docking device and the peripherals, but in minimizing the data passed between the two. A great example of this is is AIRTAME, but I think the concept can be equally well applied to all components.

True, but the type C will also deliver 100 watts. I hope that this finally brings us a real docking port that does not require any more than a single cable. A USB 3.0 dock still requires the laptop to be plugged in.
It's all good. I'm looking forward to the future of computing.

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
x88x: I will let you see any of the idea's that come out of this project. Kind of on hold right now, but I intend to pick it back up soon. Right now I have setup the ones I have with a slightly modified version of DRBL/Clonezilla. I send out a NUC to a customer, they plug the network port into their server, PXE boot and the NUC captures the image that I use in my labs for their system builds. Over the next few months I intend to get it down to a seamless plug and play to remove any user time (right now there is about an hour worth of work total for both ends (capture and deploy)).

Not to give you a reason to stay away from desktops, but I've had wonderful results with assorted of the current crop of USB 3.0 DisplayLink products. I've used both of these[1][2] dual-head adapters, and had great results with both. No lag or anything. Drivers have some occasional quirks, but overall, unless you're needing to do anything more graphics intensive than desktop work and displaying video, these things should work great.
That being said, I do still have a desktop myself. ;) Custom miniITX build in an NCASE M1.

Oops, I disappear for a few weeks and someone says something, go figure :-P.
That's a cool little gizmo for displaying multiple monitors. My problem is horsepower. Right now I'm using a late model Lenovo T430 (the old IBM-style before then went all Ultrabook) with an i5-3360, 8 GB of RAM, and Nvidia NVS 5400M that is doing it's best to keep up with my dual 1920x1200 monitors. I have one of the sweet docks that lets me drop my laptop in and pop it out at my desk.
I could actually add a third using the built in mini-displayport on my laptop but it struggles with multiple (read: way more than any sane person) tabs open. I work from home so this is my everything laptop and it's not uncommon to have 30-50 tabs during the day with various profiles, social networks, documents...etc pulled up.
I'm also doing more and more video production stuff. I'm going to give a run at doing some tech review type stuff for YouTube so a powerful video editing machine is something I need to put on my wishlist.

I've got the same laptop, but without the Nvidia graphics. I find that running the turbo boost makes a massive difference in performance; I'm often running a couple of VM's on mine during the day while doing all my day to day stuff, and have no trouble with performance. Then again, I'm only running 2 screens, as it cant' do more than that. :(

I came by to ask a question and soon realized that the site has met its tragic demise. I saw your post and thought i should respond for nostalgic reasons.
What forum is the hot spot these days?
Anyway, its been a blast and i had a ton of fun during my time here. Thanks Paul, thanks everyone.

I've seen some of the guys over at bit-tech. I still think there are a fair number of us who stick around here (I still do a daily lurk) and post when there's something interesting going on.

I THINK it can actually support 3 at once. I have think you have to use the dock for 2 DVI monitors, and then the mini-displayport on the side by the USB 3.0 hub. Supposedly it should run on all 3. However I was hitting 96 degrees C the other day so I need to figure out what's up with the cooling. I've blown the heatsink out but it hasn't helped. I think I'm going to take it apart and replace the thermal paste with something better.

I've been doing the same. Looks like Bit-Tech has a pretty active community. Also, Overclock.net has a pretty big mod community from the looks of it.

Not a bad site overall, but too many kids with bad whiny attitudes that like to argue and then complain to the mods when their feelings get hurt. The rules for getting infractions are pretty random too. Can't so much as burp on that site without getting a writeup. I stopped frequenting that site after getting an infraction for telling some kid he was wrong about something. I wasn't even rude about it.
I blame T-ball.
We would love to revive TBCS and are open to any and all suggestions to grow the site. I've even got some companies willing to donate prizes and in one case a custom designed case. Winning design would get their chassis built.

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
I lurk as well.
Lots have changed. I'm now one of two Sec Ops guys at my employer, which has changed since I really made any sort of post here. Moved further west as well, but not too much. Missoula MT is my home now.
-
Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
@Airbozo: Not to pat ourselves on the back too much, but the things you pointed out are exactly why I got hooked on TBCS in the first place. There aren't many places on the internet that I have found where a group of intelligent people can have cogent and (largely) respectful and honest conversations without anyone getting but-hurt or going off on rants about why "I'm right and you're wrong, because I said so!". Why that is, I do not know, but that above everything else is why I love TBCS; because it is one of those rare places.

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
:stupid: (The irony of this emoticon at the moment does not escape me :D)
On a serious note though, I do agree with x88x and Airbozo. I have tried to join other sites and just never found them to be as friendly a place to be. They always fall short of the vibe here. I enjoy reading well composed and complete sentences where punctuation is employed. I'm not a stickler for perfection in punctuation and grammar; I find that I am more likely to enjoy reading posts that are easy to read. In my experience, I've found posts that meet these criteria here more often than elsewhere.
The other really big point for me, x88x mention briefly. Respect. That is a rare commodity on the internet, the land of keyboards of anonymity. I feel that we're good at welcoming modders of all types, providing useful and constructive feedback, and genuinely taking interest in each others work.
On completely different note, I would like to join Drum Thumper in Beerlandia ;) (according to his country avatar)

There was an architecture firm there that was interested in hiring me, but Missoula is too middle-of-nowhere for me. Flying to family would have been a nightmare. I do love the outdoors, though. Imagine. We could have been neighbors!

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
I used to lurk all the time, with just a few comments here and there. I still lurk, just not as much. I still don't have too much as far as case mods go. I bought a NZXT case to build back in '10 or '11 and it's still sitting in a corner in it's box awaiting it's demise/rebirth. Ever since I've graduated high school, it's been a busy life for me! I'm trying to get back into modding somewhat.
-
Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
Man, I remember damn near everyone in this thread.
I have to admit I pretty much lost interest in casemodding and spending my day browsing forums. However, in the process of cleaning up my apartment I've dug out an old case I've always wanted to mod. At this point I'm either going to toss the case or just do the project. I've got an urge to build something, so I figure I may as well go ahead and mod it.
So stay tuned for project NightShift.

Oh, man. Wow, some of you guis' names bring back memories. It's been a long time since I've been here; last post in 2009...
Kinda sad to see this place as quiet as it is. I guess life just takes over, and people's priorities change. (I know mine did; what with having a job now, and spending nowhere near the same amount of time on the computer. My box is still in the same tatty case I had from 2010 or so, and has sorta stagnated; I mean, when you're not a frequent gamer, and don't really have the energy left at the end of the day... neh.)
There's still something wonderfully nostalgic about reading the same threads I was back then, though... Shame a big chunk of 'em don't have the pictures any more; ah, well, I guess that's just what happens.

Yeah, I know it would kill the server/hosting budget, but I really wish that there was a view count trigger that had the site just back everything up to host locally. I'd love to have the most popular old stuff still working.

Yeah, I'm alive and well for now...
I've been in the "clean up moved room, get job" stages right now, but I've got a few good projects hopefully coming...

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
....and the thread is resurrected again!
So what's new for me?
Still working for an MSP in western Canada, we are growing like MAD. Having a huge corporate backing can do that. ;)
My boys are now 8 and 10 years old, and they've finally caught the PC gaming bug. I've built a few computers for them, and we have now setup our own LAN gaming Arcade in the basement. 4 x 24" monitors, and 4 x decent gaming computers. Torchlight 2 is the current game of choice for all 4 of us to play together in the evenings, but with the summer finally starting to show evidence of appearing, the gaming time will likely reduce pretty greatly until the autumn.

I am finally back in IT still at the same company. Opened a bunch of T Mobile stores recently and in the last couple of days been fighting this latitued e5450 which just stopped working. I came here wondering if anyone was still active that worked with dell laptops lol.

Well we finally got off the Computer STD blacklist, so maybe we will see people trickle back in when they don't have Chrome giving them a big red screen saying this site is unsafe!

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
Still here as well!
What's been up with me?
Company I was with for almost 14 years closed (owner decided to retire and wouldn't sell me the business), so after 9 months off, doing contract work and fixing up the house and property I ended up in the Chassis division of Supermicro. I got to design a few custom systems for some security and storage customers. My favorite was the 12" cube NAS box that holds 12 3.5" SAS drives and 4 2.5" sata or ssd drives. One day that chassis might see the light of day as a product. Couldn't take being the only white guy in my group of 45 people (and the only one that didn't speak Mandarin), so I went on vacation, came back and walked out. Ended up at a company called Synnex, a major distributor for all things electronic (mostly computer stuff), in the OEM manufacturing department. Same as my long time job, but with a bigger company and a couple dozen manufacturing lines. I onboard customers into our manufacturing process.
I also sit in the same bullpen area as all of the Intel, Asus, Nvidia and Samsung Product Managers, and I am working on them for build sponsors and freebies...
Bought another motorcycle off ebay. Seriously good deal on a bike I had been following for over a year. It's a 2009 Buell XB12R and had just over 500 miles when I picked it up 2 years ago.
It's the best handling motorcycle I have ever ridden.
I have also been slowly restoring my 1995 Sportster. Tore it completely down and have been powdercoating, cleaning and painting everything and rebuilding what needs it.
Here is how it sits right now as I work on repainting the engine:
What has everyone else been up to?
Thanks for getting us off the naughty list OvRiDe!

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
I just randomly clicked my TBCS link saved on my favorites for chrome and here we are! Never did finish that Centurion 5 mod... I am such a failure :'( I ran into several issues with it and decided to scrap it. Now I have a 3 year old and another on her way and it doesn't feel like I'll ever get back into this type of hobby because of the time and patience required. Maybe I need to discipline myself more! Anyway good running back into this forum. :) Hope everyone is doing really well!

Re: So who's still around from the old days (pre 2010) ?
I think I've been here since around 2005. I pop in from time to time. I'm a grandpa now to two boys. Got in to airbrushing for a while, but then got a vinyl cutter. Vinyl decals, and now sublimation printing have taken over. I haven't painted in a couple of years.
