Which is where they would look first. Making any "stealthing" program you have utterly usless. Your only real defence would be to destroy the information before they came to your door. You are right that the FBI is more intrested in catching Piracy Profiteers than some 13 year old kid who illegaly downloads his favorite metallica tracks.

My security programs:
Ad-aware SE Professional
Norton AV 2007
Registry Mechanic Pro
GiPo Remove On Boot
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro (the company was bought out by norton and is now what norton uses)
CCleaner
I've never had any problems while using this suite of programs.
I used to use Sygate and norton Corp (USAF gives norton antivirus corp to any military member), but the firewall doesn't support Gig-E. Now I just use zonealarm security sweet. I run Ad Aware every month or so, it never finds anything zone alarm didn't. Zonealarm supports Gig-E, file sharing easily, works well with my linux hardware firewall, I like it.
Re: Anti-virus/firewall/spyware
dan,
I don't believe its possible to secure a windows PC for free anymore and explained why in this recent thread on the same subject.
Until six months ago I was using all the stuff mentioned in this thread. I have for years written guides on securing your PC for free which were widely read and recommended most of the above solutions.
Now, I recommend you use a paid for product. Personally I use Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.
:)
Re: Anti-virus/firewall/spyware
I use iptables, nothing more nothing less.
