I used to have a 87 crx. loved that little guy to death.

So I though I would contribute my ride, since I had to work on it today.... It's an 89 Lebaron, and it's seen better days...
If you notice the red strap around the bumper, that's what holds my hood closed.
Ah the engine bay. If you can't tell, the foreward firewll is pushed back, and the radiator almost touches the engine.
One beat up interior. See the hole were my stereo used to be till some chickenhead relieved me of the one nice thing my car had to offer.
As I said, I had to work on it today. Here is why.
It broke yesterday while Iwas driving, making it impossible to ignore any longer.
For those of you unfamiliar with things automotive, here is what a brake rotor is supposed to look like;
The little scrap of metal above the old rotor is what is left of one of the brake pads.
So there we go, there's my ride, in all it's white trash glory. No stereo, no AC, for some reason my odometer doesn't work, so it will have 129,867 miles on it forever, uses about a quart of transmission fluid a week, cracked windshield, bent frame, bent rear torsion arm.... The list goes on....
What happened to your rotor? I've never seen that before.
It took me a minute, but those are the fins that are normally *between* the plates on the rotor. One side of the rotor is completely worn off. I've been in the mechanical industry for a lot of years, but that's a first. Wow.
Depends on what I'm doing for the time being. I drive a 2006 Honda Civic around town and down the coast and back. Love good gas mileage.
For other purposes, I drive a 1997 Ford F350 with a 7.3 liter V8 turbodiesel built by International. Gets decent gas mileage when driven right. Takes 15.4 quarts of oil.
He probably ran it too long with either very abrasive break pads, or worn out break pads. Sub-par metal in rotors and extra corrosive anti-ice agents used in states like Minnesota, Colorado and Utah will do this as well. My rotors were not as bad last fall when I had to replace them as too much of the wear surface was corroded and flaking off. Out of something like 2 inches of width for the wear surface only .5 inches were left to wear on. This was on rotors that were in near perfect condition the previous year.
That is a nice truck you got there! Whats the Odometer got on it? Any mods?
My dodge has about 224,000 miles on it. It is getting about 17MPG with the worn converter that is in it. Was getting 21MPG before. That is with my lead foot though. Got 400HP Marine injectors, upgraded fuel system, upgraded impeller (Makes about 30psi), open pipe, and the normal boost/EGT gauges. Runs good. I need to get a new lower stall converter, and a shift kit. About 450hp 700ft-lb.
I have a rotor like that hanging in my garage. When I was in highschool I took Auto mechanics and changed out this ladys brakes one day and one of her rotors looked like that. She had not changed her brakes in 45k miles.
Mileage matters much less then how you abuse the pedal. Last month I changed out the original brake pads on my 1997 Ford F-150 with just over 70K Miles. My rotors did have a little scoring on them but not bad enough they couldn't be turned. Fortunately for me, a buddy of mine works for an auto parts distributor, so I called him about the brake pads. He looked up the rotors as well, and they were 35 bucks each. Since it was going to cost around 15-20 to have them turned, I figured I might as well swap them out as well and go for another 70K :D.
Friends wife went through brakes in about three months. I have no idea...
'02 Peugeot 306 Meridian Estate 1.9 Diesel - 80k miles.
100% practical - it's an estate (or stationwagon for some of you guys) because I have 60 kilo's of German Shepherd dog to lug around. It's a diesel because it's a hell of a lot cheaper to run - gets close to 45mpg around the doors (UK Gallon - around 40mpg US gallons).
The "Meridian" model is about as loaded as the Peugeot 306 gets - Air con, electric windows and mirrors all round, half-leather interior - nothing amazing but it works....
Does the 0-60 in a little OVER 20 seconds lol - but it gets there and will go up to just over 100 - as the speed limits here arent that high, that's fast enough for me :p
Diesels in cars! Like peas, and carrots! :) It is a real shame you don't see more in the States. Volkswagen has one, and a few others. :(
You can get a diesel version of pretty much every car on the market over here - I'm sure there'll be exceptions, but I guarantee for every one that someone points out, I'll be able to point out 10 that you can get in a diesel version... It's one of the reasons the prius has died on its arse over here - we already have cars by the boatload which leave the prius in th dust in terms of both performance and efficiency....
Regulations on diesel cars are so much different here, and so is what exactly goes in our diesel.
not all diesel is created equal. I bet UK cars would hate US diesel and vice versa.
on the topic of Diesel, though...
Not my car, but I know the guy:
it's a 1.9l VW TDi engine in a volvo 240 station wagon. bonus points: his plates ate "sootwgn"
~300ft/lb, ~200hp (that's a lot, considering stock 240s make... about half that, the day they roll off the factory floor), 45mpg. now THAT's a car.
Absolutely drooling at the last post. Bought my first vdub in April and I am absolutely in love. My very trustworthy vw mechanic proceeds to tell me when he gets done fixing it to drive it like your punishing it for what it did wrong, and the car proceeds to LIKE IT. I have been hard on cars in the past and was trying to be nice to this one but was getting crap for gas mileage. Mechanic told me to drive it like I stole it and voila car is getting great mileage and running better than before. It is also wonderful that when I have a problem just get out the laptop plug it in and it tells me exactly what is wrong not just oh its in this circuit. Will get pics up when it stops raining.
On a second note I was looking at a two passenger vdub this morning that is a hair shorter than the miata has a top speed of 140 a 0-60 of 6.2 seconds and gets 50 MPG out of a 2.0 tdi. As is often said in a vw forum I belong you never know what to expect out of a 2.0. Also the new r32 golf is smoking bmw's on the track.
I used to drive a 1996 Land Rover Discovery LWB 2.5 Ltr Tdi - turbo Diesel with 7 seats. Until I did this in it:
It ran beautifully on a mix of 2/3rds cooking oil (rape seed) + 1/3 diesel (both bought in the same supermarket ... cooking oil poured straight in the tank on top of the diesel then a good shimmy on the way out to mix em. As fuel taxes here are so high it cut my fuel cost by 70% :) .... you can run almost any diesel car on 2/3 rape seed oil to 1/3 diesel or on a pure rape seed oil mixed with 5% white spirit. Just be careful if you have Lucas carburettors .. they disolve in the rape seed oil.
She was a beaut car but I am a terrible driver. Before writing the car off in a two year period I totalled an £80K Mercedes (stationary + empty), brand new BMW (same), vintage Range Rover (also parked and empty) and took the side out of an Aston Martin (not my fault actually .... the guy drove into me).
Then did that ^ hitting a stationary flatbed truck. Luckily I was in a 4x4 or that truck would have come through my windscreen.
Nowadays I travel in these (unrelated to my awful driving) but I couldn't afford insurance even if I could drive. Gladly my awful driving never injured anyone:
CB
VERY true. That's why I run thinner oil in the winter months and run 10w40 in the summer. A lot of people are shocked when they find out I am running that heavy of oil in a 4 cylinder. My father in law had a 3 cylinder metro that ran on 20w50, honestly didn't know it came that thick without being crank case oil.
When I got my first new vehicle, it was run into TWICE in the same summer. Both times it was T-boned. Once from a huge SUV going slow, the second time from a Cavalier going fast.
Insurance fixed it both times, rather than write it off, and even gave me a rental for a month each time!
91 Oldsmobile Bravada
95 Saturn SL1
the Saturn kicked over 200,000 Miles a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Fort Collins, CO. ANNND, the beast got an average gas mileage of 42.6 MPG. :D
Yay update! lol
So here's what I was driving;
Well here is what I have now! Just got it this week
its not a minivan- its a shaggin wagon!
I've had a 92 Nissan Pathfinder 3.0 4wd for a little over 9 years. 210k miles and counting...I'll probably die before it does, but I picked up a used engine about 2 years ago for $200, just in case. Still haven't needed it.
Jeep grand cherokee, jeep cherokee, e30.
1983 Trek 640, still on original tires/brake cables. She needs a good resto, or better a good home and a more affordable bike. The frame alone is worth 500 or so...
