Scotty my boy, where've you been?
wow, that phoenix is something else. i can see what they did with it... i can pick out some wind, radial blurs, lots of brushing, and probably a lot of blending options and other things that you dont know until you experiment. i would imagine that one took forever to do.
Can you give me a link to that phoenix picture?
Thanx,
Indybird
Here is my latest desktop
Jonny Axehandle got me into the whole Rozen Maiden series.
here is my desktop...
also a i get alot if not most of my backgrounds, skins and what not from www.wincustomize.com
I have this centered on a black background
i second Minty, what can we get that's free and gets the job done ???
I have a link to a patch that lets you use unsigned theme files. Give me a minute and ill get a link up.
Link: Click Me
You might want to do some research on it before you use it. I only used it briefly so I'm not sure if there is any negative side effects. I'm also unsure as to what files it can be used with. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or not but when i had it installed i had a direct x problem. I uninstalled without really doing any trouble shooting.
As far as free options, the only other free options i personally have come across is shell replacements. They tend to change the functionality of your desktop though and im not sure if that is what you are looking for.
well i have 4 mods on my system , 1 bootskin (it changed the splash screen), logon studio (it changed the screen where you login), cursor xp (changed mouse), and windowblinds 5 (changed the start bar and stuff like that)
bootskin, logon studio, and cursorxp aare all free
windowblinds is about 20 bucks also cursorxp has a pro version for i think 20 as well i used torrent to get them,
and as for ram and how much they take cursorxp show up on my taskmgr taking about 4000k as for the others not sure i can't seem to find them in it so i'm not sure how much mem it hogs but when i play games like battlefield it doesn't seem to be bad (i've never seen its full potential for myself so my idea of running good could be different from yours but i do have a separate logon that has nothing running so i can have more ram available
here are links to bootskin, logon studio, cursorxp, and windowblinds

windowblinds will let u try for i think 45 days but u can just uninstall and then reinstall as it remembers you
I had a trial version of windows blinds, and i must say it did slow down my system, my parents told me to take it off because the system was acting funny. While it was on i couldnt even run halo.
I will say however that its not a powerful PC, I have to run most games on low settings as it is. (Most games meaning halo, which from what i understand doesn't take a powerful computer.)
That being said, if you have a powerful computer, i don't know that windows blinds (or other skinning programs) would really hurt performance, but for me it did.
If i get on the the PC later ill update with the specs on the machine.
WindowsBlinds hurt my computers speed, and I don't have a bad computer by any means (check sig for details)! I could barely render anything in Blender (with Indigo) and IMO, wasn't very good anyways. There are much better skinning programs out there.
They're a waste of system resources, every single theme.
I run WinXP, completely unskinned. Not even the fancy ass bubbly windows xp default ****.
huh. the only problems i've had with windowblinds as of yet is that i can't do anything in goldwave if i try to use any of the options like make a new recording or open a file or anything it says it won't work i think its beucase windowblinds wants to skin it but forsome reason goldwave won't let it do it as for screwing up my games i have run half life 2 with pretty high settings and i haven't had any problems i've only got 36fps but it still seems fine for me ohwell
Right now i have the XP Zune skin. It's a nice break from the crappy blue/green ****. Orange and black... nice.
got a screen shot ? or somewhere i can see what i tlooks like i tried to look but couldn't find one
My latest work, bigger one can be found Here on Deviant ART

Thank you .Maleficus., my theme now matches my black monitor, I knew it was missing something.
Whats this zune desktop theme? Does it run through some sort of skinning application, or is it actually a native theme released by Microsoft. (for free at that?!?!)
It is pretty nice looking, and if it runs natively that means it would probably be the best option, as far as not hogging my system resources goes.
Considering I don't even use the audio application for my onboard (which I am using), I guess that's a fair assumption.
I really don't like my processes to be dawdling around skinning programs in real time, they have better work to do like display dancing banana gifs.
No problem man.
Also, you might look into the Zune Theme themes. That may sound funny, but some people have skinned the theme to have different colors. Want black and purple? They have it. Blue? Yep, it's there.
Here's a link to the DA page. I haven't used it myself, but they look very nice.
I thought they meant the skins were revised from a previous version, but if it was an error on Microsoft, then the version you have is probably the latest so I wouldn't worry about it.
Here's my new desktop.
Here is one of mine. I had to shrink down the image because it's 2048x1536 (yikes!) It actually looks a bit more purple on every screen but the machine it runs on, go figure. Click on the link under it for the full image if you'd like (56K BEWARE!):
To see it full (not 56K friendly approx 2.7M): http://www.xmail.net/bigfoot/screenshot-20071402a.jpg
You may have to hit enter in the URL box as the server does not allow you to link to images outside their own server
And just for the people who care: it's running Gentoo Linux with Fluxbox for the WM. Gkrellm is running there on the right side, gnome-alsamixer on the bottom, a few Eterms, and Totem streaming an online radio station on the top left (LiquidFM - techno trance if you're really interested)
The translucencies work pretty well too :)
EDIT: What the heck so long as we are at it, here are the other two:
(56K beware) full 1600x1200:http://www.xmail.net/bigfoot/screens...v20071402a.jpg
(56K beware) full 1280x800:http://www.xmail.net/bigfoot/screens...h20071402a.jpg
all are running Gentoo Linux with Fluxbox for the WM as stated before. And if you couldn't tell, I have a strange fascination with space :)
Looks really good. I like the purple look. But then again, its one of my favorite colors. Every time i see something like this, it just makes me want to try linux to see if i can get it to look this beautiful. Im just so used to seeing old outdated looking graphics on most linux machines. Very gorgeous, nice setup.
In all honesty, it's very easy to get a cool looking desktop on Linux. Most of my friends here at the CS department here at school just use the default setup that comes with most distributions and leave it at that, maybe because they haven't figured out how to do anything different to it.
http://www.lynucs.org/ has some really cool Linux desktop setups at it.
Thanks for the compliment by the way :D
You'll have seen this then?
That space pic is like
Here's mine:
And yes, I know I have issues.....
