Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
Well,Last weekend I ran foam and failed! But not upset.I learn from my mistake.Running foam rubber is very tricky
I just Love the feel of it
I started SAT 1:30 pm
Large Bowl foam Batch 2.5
375 grams HIGH SOLIDS FOAM BASE
75 grams MICRO-CELLULAR FOAMING AGENT™ 450 grams
37 grams RAPID CURE™ CURING AGENT 487 grams
In a separate cup weight out
35 grams of GELLING AGENT
2 grams ammonia
ROOM SCHEDULE (70-74° F) (43%)15-1/2 minutes Total Time
Start 15:30
1. (mixing) Start at lowest speed to mix ingredients, slowly (over the course of 1 minute) increase to speed 12
AT 14:30
2. (whipping) FROTH at speed 12 for 5 minutes
At 9:30
3.(medium refine) speed 4 for 4 minutes
At 5:30
4.(ultra-refining) speed 2 for 4 minutes adding 2 grams ammonia
At 1:30
5. Add GELLING AGENT, 15sec. then color 15sec
At 1:00
6. Turn bowl backwards by hand to mix gel for 30 sec , then
Let mixer run until 15-1/2 minutes have elapsed. OFF
Quick ,I poured into the mold , Put the die mold in place .
Foam gelled in 20 sec.
Cooked 11 hours at 125 deg.
2in.around the edge of the mask Did not cure.Because that is the closest to the walls of the oven.
Some bubbles,I think because it started to gel some as it pour into mold.
The oven 8 , 8"x8"x8" cinder blocks
1 ,2x8" 8'
6, 2'x 2'x1" plywood
1 floor vent
4 door hinges
1 ,50'x 2'foil insulation
1 computer fan
1 single burner
1, 18"x18" 3/8 expanded medal
1.The room should have been colder,Or added more ammonia
2. Bigger oven ,I used 2'x2' plywood,Should used 3'x3'
3. Use flow enhaner
4.Foam Batch 2.0 ,not 2.5
5.Flow Enhancer
6 CHANGE FOAM MIX SCHEDULE
Now building a bigger oven 3'x3'x3'
Thanks

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
Gary,
The results came out beautifully. I hope that this next test works out for you without any flaws. I love how the cheeks flex and stretch realistically in your video test, it really came out gorgeous. Your attention to detail in the muscles and skin folds is astounding. This really ought to be a resume piece for WETA or ILM. I studied special effects a lot in high school (obsessively) and have to say your work is easily of that quality level.
Thanks again for sharing!

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
It came great, It was short in 1 place near the top right vent ,This spot would be cover with hair anyway. 4or 5 little bubbles ,But no away like the 1st one.The whole thing cure ,11hours and the 10th turn on the heat up to 140 ,So 10 hours at 126 to 129.
I think I will keep the batch size and make sure I scrape the bowl clean,Or injected it.
The oven worked Great. Oven cost $150.00 to make.
So, Now what ,I will get all of the mechs done and set eyes place. The eyes are in place but not just right. A couple mm forward or back. And then measure lip springs.
So ,Getting the whole skull thing working and talking ,ears casted too. And run another skin.
I love MonsterMakers Foam.

good work cant wait to see more progress

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
If you ran out of money or time you could use the head as a mask for halloween. I can't wait to see this finished.

After coming this far? I think i'd go bankrupt to see that to the end. If it were me that is. Looks great, i've always wanted to do special effects.

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
Gary, I have loved watching this come together every step of the way. It is pretty obvious you are getting close to finishing, and I'm thrilled to see it so close.
What are you planning on doing with the video at the end?
Also, I thought about you the other night - I was watching Mythbusters (one of my favorite programs) and they were creating new "skin" for their test dummy, "Buster", by using a latex foam mixture they called DragonSkin. It was highly impact resistant and extremely durable, and the process they went through reminded me a lot of this project.
Anyway, as someone who has always been fascintated by and studied a lot of movie special effects and makeup work, I just wanted to say that you're doing great, great work with this one, and your skill really shines. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
i dont wanna be a retard asking a retarded Q but i have to:
i see you use a software to control the servos,
did you made it, or there is somthing that can be adapted for any project,
and final Q do you think it could make a servo open\close a door depending on a temp readout
-
Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
i see you use a software to control the servos,
did you made it? No ,http://www.brookshiresoftware.com/ It record the moves and play back ,Like lip sync.Or Like stop motion animation
or there is somthing that can be adapted for any project,
and final Q do you think it could make a servo open\close a door depending on a temp readout
Im sure there is , But It would be a programer to help you.
Thanks

Re: Animatronic eye prototype for the new MONSTERMOD
I can tell you now it is possible to get servos to react based on tempertures... as for how, I'm not sure. I would think you need 2 components, the hardware for controlling the servos and the software to read the temps and then activate the servos accordingly.

Legos can do this with thier robotics kits. I think I even saw a temp controled servo kit on one of the hobby shop websites.
