So, I got some painting done yesterday. Finally! It's obviously a work in progress. I have to get some more blue paint and then sand everything smooth. Without further adu here are some pics.
That's my S-10 in the background. It needs a head gasket.
Yes, it's sitting on some extra plexi and my spool of CAT5.
Actually... no, I've never been in the military... turning 18 this Thursday... If I've offended you or anyone else, I'm sorry... just trying to crack a joke. I'm most likely not going to join up for personal and medical reasons, but if I do it'll prolly be the Air Force. That's for a couple reasons, 1) The Army Recruiter won't leave me the hell alone and 2) I'm not much of one for running around and shooting, I'd rather be behind a desk (which would be boring as hell, but better than being shot at IMHO) and I'd like to learn how to fly. I'm probably gonna go into some sort of computer related field though.
Again, I'm sorry if I said something I shouldn't have, just me and my general ignorance from being young. And I really don't want to have an argument with anyone, so if I did something dumb, just ignore me and let me know what it was, thanks.
Great job sgtm.
xRyokenx - No worries man. If you do decide to join the military and have questions, I would be happy to answer them. I was never a recruiter, so I'm not going to lie to you like some will.
b4i7 - dont' worry about clutter. I don't see it that way.
Commando - Yeah, the Corps does have that MAJOR advantage over civilian jobs. It's easy to become complacent. I'm pretty happy with First Energy. I'm surrounded by cool people. It's a shame I can't take pics of our data center. You guys would love it.
We're cookin out today, so more than likely, I'm not going to get anything else done.
edit: Just noticed I have 6 bars now. Cool!
Small update. I got some more paint on the front bezel. I forgot to take pics, so I'll see about getting some up tomorrow. Next will be sanding it smooth and clear coat. After that I have to cut the window, paint the panel, mount the window, paint the inside of the case (red is already down for the stripe), and put it all back together again.
Design reminder:
b4i7.. awesome stuff there! If only I had a mill..... +rep dude.
Had some ideas for this on the way to work tonight. I'm going to see about getting at least 1 of them done over my 2 days off for the 4th. One of them can't really be done until everything is behing put back together. Watch this space.
One small update for today. I changed the LED's in my window fan from red and blue to just blue. The fan you see in the back will probably go to 4 red LED's, and be mounted as the front intake. I've also got an idea for my DVD burner that I'll (hopefully) get to try out tonight. Remember, everything is in a temp case.
Are you moved into the new place yet? I am anxious to see you get crackin on this!
I just had an idea when I was looking through your work log. I'm not sure what your metal working skill is at but what about making a fan grill to look like a rifle badge?
Oh yeah I almost forgot to ask. Are you going to have it play the Marine Corps Hymn whenever you turn the computer on?
I don't know what's going on today with me but I just can't stop thinking about your case.
I'm anxious too. I went to the lender today to get the loan paperwork done. We finally got the offer signed by the seller. Now, I just have to wait for the loan to close (up to 45 days because it's a VA Loan) and then after that we have to give 30 days for the seller to move out. I'm hoping that everything goes quickly though. I know that the seller already has a new place about an hour from here, so we'll just see. I'll be able to do little things up until we move though.
Both of those are really good ideas! +rep. I don't know about the rifle badge fan cover, but I might be able to pull off Sgt chevrons out of aluminum. I thought about putting collar chevrons (the gold ones) on the DVD/CD drive covers. I'm not sure how it would look though. As far as the Marines Hymn, I would need a soundboard for turn on, but I could definitely make it so it plays that on login. Then maybe play evening colors on shutdown.
I also had another idea for the window, I have to do some testing on that first though. We'll see what happens.
Workshop in the new house.. keep in mind that none of this is my stuff. Who knows that they'll leave behind though.
Well, I tried out my optical drive mod last night on an old drive I had. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to pull it off. I'll have to open the actual drive to be modded and see how much free space there is. I didn't get on the window idea. I'll see about trying that on Sunday.
::EDIT:: just had another LED idea. This one won't be as evident as the fans, but it's going to be cool.
So here's what I'm thinking for a bit of ambient lighting. Install a few LED's behind the motherboard. You know how the neon underbody car kits look? I want to achieve that effect behind the mobo. Now the hard part.. What color should I use? I have red and blue (more red than blue). I'll have to wire up a few and see what it looks like. I'm thinking that to get a really good effect, I'm going to have to sand down to metal behind the motherboard, and polish it up a little. Thoughts or suggestions on that anyone?
cool idea, would go for red, you know the led sanding trick?
do i ned to type something?

Looks like the top was sanded flat.
exactly, i made this several times and yes it works sooo great, just dont sand to the metal ;)
I'll definitely try that. I have to spread some rep around before I can give it to you. Thanks for the tip.
That's a neat trick, never would have thought of that.
So here's my lighting idea. I was contemplating going with red, but I think that with the blue innards, I'm afraid it would wash out as purple. What I'm going to do is mount 4 led's behind the motherboard. According to an LED calculator I found, I can run it off of the 12v rail with a 1/4w resistor. What do you guys think?
um hey thats cool, the resistors take one fpr every led, use 1/4 w as you said and they have 470 ohm for 12 volt or 220 for 5 V
This project is still alive guys. I was digging around in the garage, and found some 3M fine cut rubbing compound. So, I decided to give it a try. I still have A LOT more to do, but I thought I would fill you in on some progress shots.

Let me know what you think.
i think it's shiny
I've been doing some more work on the polishing. It's no where NEAR done yet, but it's starting to look REALLY good. Unfortunately, the pictures don't do it justice. My fricken arm hurts!
AHH bore baby. Sissy
NO PAIN NO GAIN.
Shut-Up and drink some more water! Now get back to work!
I want to see some blood, sweat and tears put into this project.
Does that remind you of the good old days in the Corps.
Well if you get tired you could always wuss out and get a buffer.
OK I'm done picking on you for now. Great process with the case thus far. You better not quit now.
Ok.. ya got me. But I'm a nasty civilian now. I feel like I'm spit shining this panel, but it's definitely going to be worth it. I kinda like it anyway. There's something soothing about it.
+rep for making me laugh
Thanks for keeping me in line Spacehonkey. Here's a picture of me buffing out the side panel tonight. Not sure why it's so dark though. Oh well, you guys get the idea.
EDIT: I'm finding out that I didn't do the best job wet sanding the black before clearing. Up close, you can see imperfections. No big deal though. I'm satisfied with it as is. If I'm lucky, I'll be finished with this panel by this weekend, and I can do the top next week. Still gotta get the other side panel cut and painted.
Well, 2nd day in a row I haven't been able to work on polishing. However, I did get to go see what will soon be my house, and there is very good news. The previous owners are about 95% moved out. My mantra for the next few weeks will be "keys at closing".
So.. I got the window cut today. I didn't have my camera with me though, and the few that I took with my cell phone are horrible, so I'll spare you from having to look at them.
I'd be willing to bet that that pic of you buffing is dark because whoever took the picture partially covered the flash on accident.
I almost forgot about this mod. This log is one helluva read! Two thumbs up!
Looking good Sgt, cant wait to see it up and running. Keep up the good work +rep from me :)
I'm a little upset. It seems that someone may have lost the top cover to the case during the move. I can't find it ANYWHERE right now. I might have to scrap this (I don't have another case to use). I'll keep looking.
