Text update for now--left my camera across town.
Stopped by Radio Shack, got 4 3mm red LEDs, 2 chrome 5mm LED holders, and a pair of yellow LEDs, of which I'm only going to need one (HD activity.)
Cut the offending latch system off the bottom of the case on the windowed side.
Wetsanded the front panel. Got a bit overzealous. No biggie, I'll be throwing more primer at it shortly.
I also have some mineral spirits in my possession. Time to prep some metal.
But not now, it's nearly 9 pm here and I've pissed off just about every dog in the neighborhood with my dremel.
There might be pics in the near future--I've got a bit of homework to knock out as soon as I get home.
A bit of an update!
I've started my frontal assault on the fan controller. For those of you who don't remember, I won a grab bag from site owner Crimson Sky last year, and one of the items in the bag was this:
That blue, however cool it does look, needs to go. It does NOT fit in with the color scheme one bit. So, out comes the Leatherman and the soldering iron:
After much fighting with my cheapo soldering iron, and figuring out which side was positive, I ended up with this:
Low intensity LEDs from Radio Shack FTMFL. 2.5 mcd, 700 nm peak wavelength. If I install all five of them, I'm gonna end up with pink--and that ain't gonna work.
So, another order to Hong Kong's finest LED Shoppe is in my near future. And a trip down to Radio Shack to return the package of FTL LEDs that I haven't opened up yet.
should look nice. you may end up needing high intensity reds to get the full color
A small preview of what is going to happen tonight when I get home:
Then it's back to the painting.
Erm.. I dont get it.. pardon me, electronics retard here
mmm cant wait for the update
Switch has been installed. And in the true spirit of this mod, I had to do a bit of hacking to make it work.
I took an unconventional approach and made my pilot hole from the back.
Phone call interrupted my modding, so I thought I would take an in progress picture.
The biggest drill bit I have wasn't big enough. No problem, that's what the dremel is for.
Damn thing got away from me. Not to worry though:
As you can see, most of it got ate up while making the hole, and the rest of it will be covered in the near future by a flat washer.
That's with nine volts applied. Seems a bit orange, but in real life it's quite red.
I've also abandoned the chrome LED holders, as they protrude too much. I'll get something worked out--lets say I'm formulating an idea for the HD activity light.
Now, as soon as my LED Shoppe purchase shows up, I'll finish switching out the LEDs on the fan controller.
I have some low profile chrome panel mount LED's that would match your power switch perfectly. I think I have green and red. If that sounds interesting, PM me, I will send you a couple for free.
looking good hope to see more soon
And the night shot:
I can't wait to see this put together. Its stuff like this that makes me want to mod all night long.
Edit: iandh--check your PMs.
lookin sweet
I'll be finishing up the fan controller tonight.
Oh, and those blue LEDs? I've got plans for them too.
got enough LEDs? holy crap!
http://www.ledshoppe.com. Shipping is free, although it takes a while (~2 weeks) to get them. I'm considering buying 1000 piece packs and turning them on Ebay as 10 ct packs.
Remember this?
Well...it looks a lil' something like this:
I'll be tearing this apart once again in the near future to throw some paint on the front panel, but this is where I'm at for the time being.
I wish I had more to post for everyone, but I've got homework to get cracking on.
mmmm... Red looks GOOOD!!
Good luck on the HW!!
Oh my good old CCNA days I miss them. I do have a question though I have that same fan controller in black from vantech and was wondering how you got the knobs off. The only difference I see is your is a four fan controller and mine is a three fan and one cathode controller for a dual cathode setup.
diggin the red. nice work there.
Thats what I tried however they didnt seem to budge at all. How much pressure did you put on it because I dont want to damage the potentiometers.
They popped right off for me with minimal force. Sounds like you might have a very small allen-head screw holding them in place.
:O mate are you re-selling LEDs? hahaha cos thats like A LOT of them. Btw, if you're setting up the LEDs on other parts can I see how the whole board looks like? Cos i got no idea tho I want to do a couple for the next mod.
what color LEDs do you have again? I may need some for my project :)
5mm -- Red, Whte (clear) and Blue. I should do a patriotic mod sometime :D
3mm -- Red.
PM me, I'll set something up on ebay with a buy it now.
you wouldnt happen to have any UV ones would you?
Did those LED's come in yet? Interested to see the placement.
Yes, they showed up over the weekend. Thanks again!
I might be able to get placement figured out tomorrow after work.
any more preogress?
Sadly, no. Been focusing mainly on school. Give me a few weeks to wrap that up and we'll see what'll happen.
School did cost serious money, but it made me powerful. However, Google makes you even more powerful.
google is my friend... lol
Time to resurrect the dead. Weather is finally cooperating with me, so I've got some work to finish up.
I've got a new motherboard for this build. Tis a Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2. I'm limited to a dual core chip for this board, which is more than enough horsepower for me. There's currently a gig of RAM installed as well.
Hard drive wise, I'm currently planning on a couple of 750 gig drives for storage and whatever small thing I got laying around for the OS. I've got to dig around in linux and see what my choices are for playback. I'll most likely have the remote control concept come back for an encore performance as well.
Hoping to lay down primer tomorrow for what should be the final time. Somewhere around 5 coats, then wetsanding sometime this weekend. Next week will be some black, followed by masking tape, followed by white and fine line masking tape and finally the red.
SWEET cant wait to see some progress
