That's what I was thinking, you could 5V or even 3V a fan if possible. You would have to recess the fan and remove the blades and attach a gear. If you used metal gears that would slow the fan down even more. You could even do it with only 1 fan, just link the cogs together, this would also help with slowing the fan down.
wow, that came out wickedly awesomely sick!
+rep on a job WELL done.
my only criticism would be the res/turbine seems a shade to big for the case. but it's still really sick none the less, great work as always :banana::banana::banana:
I hate to say this because I see how much work you have put into this and it really is a fantastic case mod...but the paintjob just doesn't look right to me. I'm no expert and I certainly don't want to discourage you, but the paintjob with the matching top and bottom just makes the whole setup look muttled. The kit bashing is great, the design and engineering are awesome, and I think the logo is damn sexy but the paintseems to be pulling my attention. I also don't know how well that logo (sexy as it is) goes with the other colors. With all of that industial hardware you have fixed on there, I think it would look better if you painted the whole thing with several coats of primer and then a mid-dark, matte grey. Then spray over that with a gloss black and using a rag or something brush the surface coat off of the more superficial surfaces off while still wet. I dunno, just my opinion and it's your project which is turning out great anyway. My last bit of advise would be to try ositioning he turbine further back and forward to see if it looks better than square on top.
Loving what you have going here and can't wait for the vids!
Jon
Agreeing with jdbnsn. All the mechanics are great and I love all your work, but the paint kind of let me a little bit down. (Not that I could make it better myself though. :P )
Maybe a little bit more like this?

And some scratches like this?

Just my thoughts. Keep up the great work! :D
I really appreciate your constructive critisim. I agree that its is starting to get a little overwelming all being the same. to be honest, I'm not sure where I"m going with the paint scheme. I wanted that old industrial rustic, weathered look like an old machine that comes to life. I'm really not that good of a painter, infact this is the most detaild paint I've ever done on anything. Its easy to do the weathering and dry brushing, so I figured why not.
again, I appreciate your comments! Sorry I haven't got an update for you guys, I've been working my tail off to meet some VERY! tight deadlines for a project. And its going to be that way till the end of the year. I've been putting in at least 20 hours of overtime a week, so when I get home, I just want to eat and sleep. Its hard to get motivated or find time to work on it.
Thanks,
I think most of us are like that this time of year. I've squeezed a little time in on my mod but i haven't managed to got the worklog started..
Excellent mod!
One question - and I may have missed this somewhere in here - what thickness of styrene are you using? Looks way thicker than anything I've seen at the store.
And for a first time, you did a hell of a job. If you want to refine the look a little, you should hit Crimson up for some tips (or as he would probably say..."yah, buy my book").Quote:
this is the most detaild paint I've ever done on anything
-Jon
Thanks, I used different thicknesses throughout the project. They ranged from .02 to .125 inches thick.
I got the sheets at a local hobby town.
Yeah, I was considering buying his book, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. :)
I'm sure there are many things that can be learned from his wealth of knowledge!
Maybe Santa will get me a copy for Christmas!!!!
edit: Hey I just noticed that I now have 6 Light green bars. Thanks everyone!!!!
You've earned it, I remember seeing your first post about your planned turbine project, and watching as you built it. Hoping it would get featured, I was truly impressed. When you started this, I was eager to see how it would turn out, and you've surpassed my hopes. I'm loving it.
Hey man, had some questions about airbrushing. Which one do you have? Do you use friskets for masking, or do you mostly go freehanded? Also what kind of paints are you using?
I have a paasche air brush. http://www.paascheairbrush.com/doubl...FQRvHgodWBC5yg
I"m not sure the exact model. something close to the 2000VL hobby kit.
I'm not sure what friskets are. I mostly use blue painters tape, and sometimes just go freehand for masking.
I'm using acrylic paints I bought from my local Hobby Town. I chose acrylic because it cleans up with water and thins easily.
This mod has been featured on the front page!
Getting the paint just right is a very tough technique to master. Paint the whole thing black again and start to build up your color in subtle layers. For Doom 3, it was a combination of airbrush for base colors, then drybrushing, colored washes, pastels, powders and a combo of flat/gloss paints to bring depth and realism. Get some very good sable brushes too.
Jon saw Doom 3 close up and can vouch for the subtle yet effective paint job that was given to it. Airbrushing for models is only a rough process, the rest takes many (many many) hours of brush painting. I've been practicing for 30 years to become a master model maker, so just keep at it!
Try some of the following secret products and keep up the GREAT work.
Weathering Pastels for the Ultimate in Realism
Gray Tone Pastels for the Ultimate in Realism
Doc O'Brien's Weathering Powders
RUSTALL SYSTEM
Wow, thanks Crimson! I've really got a lot of learning to do to get this right. I'm actually just playing around with different methods of painting without any real guide as to what I'm doing. I will check into those dry powders. And thanks for putting me on the front page!!!! Sorry I haven't gotten any progress on this. My Job right now is taking all my free time. I've been working everyday for the past 3 weeks straight except today. Then I'm back at it for another week and a half. but after that, I should get back to this.
By the way, Merry Christmas to everyone!
OMG, I never knew there was so much you could do with an air brush. I may have to invest in one ;).
Congrats for the frontpage and good luck with weathering. I wish I can paint my Orb as nice as your "playing around" painting :) +Rep for the result and for still trying to improve it!
Well, Its been a while since I've made an update. I apologize, I've been swamped with a project at work, My last day off other than Christmas day was December 1st. LOL.
Anyway, here's the progress that I manged to get done in the little free time I had.
I started to paint the base unit. First I taped off some shapes on the top.
then i just did the same thing only in different colors.
Then I started the detail painting of all the parts.
Here a couple shots with the flash on. The flash really makes it look like crap. It looks so much better in person.
Here are some shots with the flash off. this is alot closer to what it really looks like. but they are kind of dark.
you can also notice I gave the entire inside a coat of black paint.
I gave everything so far a coat of semi-gloss clear coat to protect it too.
Then I installed the power switch. You can also see that I removed the liquid mask from the leds in the motorized trays.
Next after clear coating. I went to remove the liquid mask that I applied so long ago. Here is a shot before I remove it. You can see the "channels" where it is located between the panels.
Here is a shot with the back up to light. It still has the blue painters tape on the back side to protect the back.
and here is the back side with the tape removed. You can clearly see where the "light" channels are around the panels.
I got some spray frosting to coat the back of the panel.
Here is a shot after 1 coat of frosting. It deffinetly dulled it out and it has that frosted look, but I want it to be more, so I will add a few more coats.
I noticed that the more it dried, the more it frosted. the picture was taken while it was still wet.
thats all I got done up untill last night. I added a few more coats to the frosting, so I will have to see how it turned out.
Untill next time, Peace!
Hey welcome back. Awesome work. I swear one of these days I'll have something to say besides 'awesome work'. But it will probably just be 'great work'.
+Rep
Man that is some awesome work. +rep
it's really coming along! keep-up the good work. i can't wait to see this finished, it's already giving me ideas for the mod i'm planning (whenever i have the time to do it). +rep
VERY impressife mod!! congratulations, i am amazed what youve done!! INCREDIBLE!!
Awesome job man
thanks again you guys. I've been hard at work painting the other side, back and top of the case. I'd upload some pics but I have to run to bowling tonight. if I dont' drink too much tonight, I'll try and get an update to you, but No promises...
Later!
:yellow_green:
ok, Another painting update:
I started to paint the other side of the case. I started with the large Rotating gear. i painted it similar to the other side of the case.
Then I started on the panel.
here is a shot of the fan controller.
I taped off the inside of the gears to paint the gears themselves.
unfortunaly I got bit by the "Bad Primer" bug again.
the Paint pulled away when I removed the painters tape.
So i will have to touch up those areas.
Here is the finished Panel. With flash. You can see that I removed the masking from the gears with the frosted panels.
here is all the panels and parts so far that are done.
Then i started on the back panel. Painting it similar to the rest of the case. I think you get the idea.
And the top.
The last thing I did was prime the case screws.
I will have to give them some drybrush dirt when they are dry.
thats it for now. I still have the tv to do, and the front panel.
After that, final assembly and water cooling setup!
The end is near!!!!
Looks very nice, nice and dirty. Please paint those PCI covers to match, they look so out of place, even if you only paint them black.
Ask, and ye shall receive.
Inside:
I painted the TV part by first taping off the screen.
Here is the back panel removed and the front.
And the inside of the recessed part.
The outside front
I also painted the front trim ring:
and I got started on the motorized panels on the front.
Thats it for now.
This is for sure, best case mod(or should i say case made:) )ever. There is no word that could exress awesomest of your case,i'll just say visual perversion 8)
Woot! I admittedly haven't stopped in for a while to check up on your progress. I see you have been honing your painting skills, that is looking much better with the variety of colors and the "dusty" look. Keep it up dan, you are doing a great job!!!
i've never seen that frosting paint, it'd be alot easier than actually trying to frost the acrylic by sanding. good show!
i am just going nuts !
super mod and i appreciate the hard work and dedication !
caught the Turbine mod early on and was very impressed (im using the same res woot)
anyway havebeen out of the frame for a while and im glad to come back and see some great work here
and love the servo stuff i was thinking of trying something similar using old CD drive motors but didnt have the imagination or skill great work very inspiring stuff
AWESOME!!!! how could I not have seen this before? I'm in love with it :D
+rep
See how much better does it look with the painted PCI covers. Fantastic work mate, keep it up.
