Norton360 is a really good program but not free i think they have a 15day tiral you can use.
But the only free program i can think about it Spybot Search & Destroy but thats for Spyware & Adware
Comodo Firewall (I'm using it right now and like it), ZoneAlarm (another firewall), AntiVir Antivirus, SpyBot is good... AdAware SE... that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Windows Live OneCare is also a good one
I want to bring this question back for a more current opinion. I use windows firewall, AVG antivirus, Spysweeper, and AdAware. AdAware is the only program that ever finds anything, both Spysweeper and AVG scan for a good half hour and come up clean everytime. Now if I really am virus and spyware free then that's great, but I am skeptical because it just seems unlikely, espeially the spyware. I even emailed Spysweeper's tech support about it and never heard back. Anyone else having similar behaviors? Recommendations for more effective programs? I did look at the wiki, but I'd also like to hear from your experiences.
I use AVG and it has picked up some stuff. My wife is fond of chatting and clicked on someone's picture.jpg.exe
It flagged that up right away.
when i was using windows i had AVG and it wold always pick up an on any sort of questionable programs i lying around so it must be doing something right.
As for the spyware the only free one that i found effective was spybot S&D.
I keep finding all sorts of files like that on my computer, except I run linux so there's no reason for any .exe files. That must be where they are coming from, my wife loves chatting also.
That's one advantage of linux, I can leave the computer safe in her hands, because even if she did download a virus, or other nasty, she wouldn't be able to compile it anyway. Ah, the power of root.:D
For antivirus software, a common package linux users like is ClamAV. There is also a Windows version. I haven't personally used the windows version but the linux version works well.
Wasnt there only about 10 viruses discovered for linux in the last year compared to about 10,000 for windows?
