Project: Green Light
Ok so I'm going to be starting my first mod here in the very near future. The theme is going to be NVIDIA so AKA Green Light. I wanted to start this log a bit early so that I can make sure that what I buy will be good for other mods. (Esp. the tools) The hardware that I have already bought are:
*Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 GHz (1066 MHz FSB)
*256MB XFX GeForece 8600 GT
*XFX nForce 650i Ultra NVIDIA
*80 GB Primary HDD
*2 GB Corsair RAM (2 x 1 GB)
*80mm Antec Tri-Cool Green LED Fans (4)
*Antec 900 Case
And what I need to buy:
*320 GB Secondary HDD
*Monitors
*Lighting
*Siding
*New Dremel
*120mm Antec Tri-Cool Green LED Fans (4)
What I plan on doing is build an idea of what I want the modded case to look in SketchUp. (I'll post pics when I have time) I'm going to probably use an older case to make this modded one out of and use the Antec 900 Case to just house the guts for now. (I wanna use it :D) So I'm rummaging through some old cases that I have piled up in my room, seeking the perfect one. Although, I do have an Ultra Full Tower ATX case that my old "modded" computer is in. My dad is currently using it but I might use that instead of another older case because it has features like:
*Removable HDD casing with attached Fans
*Lots of room
*Fits any MOBO
*And has large clear side
If I use this Ultra tower, I'll probably take out the clear panel and change it to a green. Also, I'll be cutting out the top of the case to make that a window as well. Not too sure what to do with the front of it because it has a door on it, and I really don't know if I can do a door mod. :/
So I have alot of decisions to make but at least I'm headed in the right direction and I have a good plan that I will be following. Please make any suggestions or comments on my updates. (PICS SOON!)
Thanks everyone!!

Re: First mod: Green Light
QUESTIONS
Ok so I'm really debating whether or not to use water cooling. I’ve been looking at Danger Den kits because I have been seeing alot of modders use that for the quality and price. They have a place where you can custom build your own water cooling system to fit your needs. The kit I made consists of:
Base Price = $52.95
*CPU Water Block – Danger Den TDX
*Top Style – Lucite – Clear (WTF is this??)
*Video Block – None (They don’t have one for the NVIDIA 8700 GT)
*Fitting Size – ½ OD High Flow Fitting for ½ ID Tubing
*Radiator – Black Ice Pro 2 (Black) = $33.95 (This one is the Double one. Would it be better if I got the 2 Singles or the one Double?)
*Fans – None (I just bought 4 120mm Green LED)
*Pumps – DD CPX-1 12V Pump = $42.95 (Could I get something better for around the same price?)
*Reservior – Single 5 ¼ Bay Reservior = $29.00 (Is this really worth it? Or should I look to get a better looking custom one? Clear one mabe?)
*Reservior LED – 2 X Green 5mm Molex = $5.00 (Cool? No idea about this either lol.)
*Tubing – 10 Feet of Clearflex = $12.00 (Got more because I have no idea how much I’ll need or mess up :P)
*Misc – 12 Hose Clamps, Y & T Connectors = $9.00
*Total = $184.85 (Kinda affordable...)
I would really want to do some type of water die. Not really UV because I don’t like the UV lights lol. So I’m just thinking a green die will have a good effect. REMEMBER!! I’m looking for like a starters kit but I dont want it to be crap.
Please suggest and comment.

Re: First mod: Green Light
but you dont have an 8700 and it wont be out for another month there not going to have a block for it for another 2 months minimum after it comes out and due to the fact that its a different board theyre not gonna make adapters for previous models danger den is probably going to be doing alot of testing on that card BEFORE they even announce that the block is coming out on top of that g98 will be out by then and the combine cost of an 8700 plus the cost of a brand new block would probably be give or take a hundred dollars less then a g98 that will have dx10.1 support and jsut have it aircooled
imo dont by an 8700 i actually want one cuz im stuck with my 7600gt and no more than 70fps on cod2 with 1280-1024 but i may get a ati board (i know im a nvidia fanboy i had nvidia spray painted onto the side of my case but i also love amd and i have 2x monitors and with vista they took out an option for dual display that converts the two monitors into one i think they called it span now they just have crappy dual view
good luck w/ the mod sounds cool
have a +rep for an incentive to give me shots of naked gfx cards

Re: First mod: Green Light
Gah... I really need to read what I buy LOL. Ya I did buy the 8600 GT. I'll have to look that up instead. Thanks armadilloben!

Re: First mod: Green Light
sounds like a good price/performance kit you got there.
Quote:
Top Style – Lucite – Clear
all that means is its a clear top so you can see the coolant flow. Lucite is a type of plastic, here is a Lucite guitar.
Quote:
*Reservior – Single 5 ¼ Bay Reservior = $29.00 (Is this really worth it? Or should I look to get a better looking custom one? Clear one maybe?)
did it show a picture of it? most of those are already clear or can come in see through green, red, blue (i think).
i've only really done research (in terms of reviews) on swiftech stuffs so here is a good cpu kit for 239.99. plus with that pump you can add more water blocks/rads down the road without an upgrade. its a nice strong pump that alot of people use. here is a review of the swiftech kit should you consider it.

Update 1
Update – Case model
Here are a couple of pictures of the case I wanna make. They are rough but you get the general idea.
Shot of the side clear panel.
Shot of the top clear panel.
Back of the case.
Corner shot to see both clear panels.
Front shot.
Another corner shot.
Back corner shot.
Ya, I know I suck with the program. But I feel like I'm getting better with it as I make more stuff. I'll have pics of my workplace coming soon. I just need to finish my room and the work bench in my basement.
Also I'm buying a Dremel soon. I thought the were more expensive but only $44.99 for a 65 piece Craftsman one.
Comments please :D

Re: First mod: Green Light
are you really gonna kill that antec case:( as far as i can se you are gonna rip it completely apart:D... at least thats what it looks like in your sketches, IMO its a bit to square:/
but go for the watercooling:D always a nice thing to experiment with if you havent tryid it before! i like :p
more sketchup of the case? :)

Re: First mod: Green Light
nice case to mod.... im working on a similar one myself

NO WAY!! The Antec case is wayyyyy to cool to kill. I'm killing that blue Chief Tech one. I'm still noob at Sketchup so im trying to make it look like the one I'm going to mod. The antec is for the parts (hardware) that will eventually be going into the mod because I really want to use em :D.
Still undecided on the watercooling. I'm looking at the DD set that I posted the specs earlier.
So I will be making more Sketchup of the case I'm going to mod soon.

Update 4
UPDATE - PARTS
So instead of getting a single 320 GB HDD for my secondary. I decided to do 2x 160 GB. Bought them from a friend for $25 each. BRANDY NEW!! :D I'm using one for all of my games and the other for music, pictures and such.
I'll post pics of the parts built into the Antec Case.

So you don't plan on using an operating system? I typically like to access the content on my HDs but it's your prerogative I guess.
Seriously nice deal, I want someone to give me that deal. Good luck with the mod.

Re: First mod: Green Light
Oh sorry. I thought I stated earlier that I would be using a 80 GB HDD for my primary.
Thanks

Update 5
UPDATE - PARTS
Well I finally got my 22" widescreen :D.
Sorry I haven't posted in a bit. School and work are getting crazy because it is getting near the holiday season and I'm taking 25 credits .
I've made a few changes to the plan. My dad needs a computer, so im taking out some things like my processor and ram and giving them to him. Because I work for Dell I could sign up for the Intel Retail Edge :D. So I'm waiting to get my Quad core. I bought myself 4 GB of RAM and I am giving my dad the 2 GB that I currently have. I'll prob post his stuff once I get all the parts in next week.
Stay tuned :D.

Re: First mod: Green Light
25 credits! You are working too...
No wonder modding time is hard to come by...:lick:
I am getting tired just thinking about it...:D
I like the clear top idea...
I wonder if we could fit that into our build... hmm...

Re: First mod: Green Light
project green light is stopped at a red light?
-
Re: First mod: Green Light
hopefully its just a yellow light that he speeds through.

Re: First mod: Green Light
I'm trying guys. My dad's computer is just about done. All I have to do is finish installing his games and box it up. As for Green Light..... money is really tight and so is time. Dell has me working about 48 hours a week now so I'm getting mad overtime. :D I have to buy a car in the near future so, got to save up for that as well.... need more money!!! Oh well... I'll get to it asap.
Thanks,

Re: First mod: Green Light
Finally got my dad's computer done, and on time. It was like 4 am Thanksgiving Day when it was done formating. He loves it. I'll post some pics tonight because I actually have a day off work!!!
I'm probably going to start the cutting of the case on break. I think thats gonna be the only time that I can.
Stay tuned!

Re: First mod: Green Light
What do you guys think about this for a watercooling unit?

Its a good name but I'm not sure about the idea of all in one.
Lemme know please!!

Re: First mod: Green Light
kits/all-in-ones are junk j-junk! i thought i told you that already? maybe not. whats your budget for cooling?
a good setup can be had for 200 or so i think, otherwise go highend air, TRUE 120.
if you want to cool ONLY your cpu, not a quad, then here is a good swiftech kit.
-
Update 6
UPDATE - MODEL
Well I am officially getting my Quad Core :D. It is the Q6600 2.4 GHz, 1066 FSB. So if I do water cool it will need to be able to cool a quad. I'm still debating the setup I built on the first page from Danger Den. Just shooting around some ideas.
Spawn and Buddhist - I have a new design I've been throwing around. Same general idea, but a new front. No idea how to do it so I'll need the input.
Here is the front view. Obviously ignore the size. It is so I can get a picture of what I want it to look like. I would like to make it look like a stop light but only have the Green Light lit. Hence the name green light.
Here in the side view you can see where I want to put the fan. It would be a green led fan and it would be mounted to green plexi there in the hole. Not sure what to do about the other 2 lights. Whether to keep them solid or use plexi and just not have them lit. (Clear unlit fans)
Another side shot so you get what I mean.
Let me know what you think. All input is greatly appreciated and needed.
-
Re: First mod: Green Light
Maybe light all the windows with LED's rather than fans. Like the real "Stop lights" they could come on in sequence (controlled by a little timer/sequencer circuit) with just the green staying on once you have powered up.
:)

Re: First mod: Green Light
errrr.... I'm no electrician Buddhist. I have nooooooooo idea how to do that.

Any links to help out? If so lots of rep coming your way :D

Re: First mod: Green Light
Something like this could do it but it will cycle through all three lights (however you could set red and yellow to be on for two seconds and green for 25 minutes - it's very flexible).
You need a simpler circuit to just go red-yellow-green. All it has to do is time the red on for say 5 seconds, then yellow for 5, then green comes on and stays on so. There are probably a load of ways to do this with quite simple home made circuits but i'll leave it up to one of the electronic guru's like crazybillybob to tell you more.

With a simple home made circuit using one or two transistors, capacitors and a few resistors you can knock up what you need with parts from Radioshack (does it still exist?) for less than $10.
I can't design the circuit for you but I know there are peeps here who can.
