Speed up your internet speeds

1) Download "TCP Optimizer"
2) Go to www.speedtest.net and run a speed test.
3) Open TCP Optimizer, select "optimal settings" in the bottom right corner
4) Apply/restart
5) Go back to www.speedtest.net , compare results, dance :banana:

NOTE: Results may very, but typically a 300% DL gain.

Test subjects (all with Cox cable, high speed internet):

-Vista laptop, wireless. Negative affect.

-XP laptop, wireless. Download went from [6088kb/s DL / 555kb/s UL] to [19278kb/s DL / 558kb/s UL]

-XP Desktop, direct-connect. Download went from [12581kb/s DL / 560kb/s UL] to [23356kb/s DL / 558kb/s UL]

I've used a few of these optimizers in the past.. the only time I saw a gain was in torrents, and it was a pretty decent gain in performance. Maybe not 300%, but closer to 150% for me, IMO.

Thats odd to see those speeds coming from COX internet. I'm sitting in Norfolk, VA and my downstream on their standard package is 10-13 mb/s with an upstream of 2.0 mb/s. When I had my cable upgraded to the premium service I was pulling 18-20 mb/s down and 3.0 mb/s up. That test was performed using the Washington DC server through www.speakeasy.net/speedtest.

Just tested before posting...normal service is giving me:

16.7 mb/s Down
2.2 mb/s Up

I will have to try this when I get back home this weekend. Dont have time now.

I have comcast. My upload speed is right on. I pay for 6meg dl/1meg up, so my upload is right there. But my downloads suck balls compared to what I pay for.

I think comcast just sucks, because where I lived before we had a business class 16meg connection and the most I got was 1.9meg dl. Just crappy. We have Verizon fiber in my area so I will have to check prices with them.

You have to be carefull with the claims of some ISP's. They will claim to be providing a 6d/1u service and what they really mean is; You will be able to access information INSIDE their network at those speeds. Once you step outside their network, they cannot help you.

Most companies operate the same way. No ISP will guarantee you any speed beyond their network. The trick is finding a reputable one that you know performs well (such as COX).

I did once have a problem with COX though. Wall->Modem->PC = Great. Wall->Modem->ROUTER->PC = Packet loss galore. They kept telling me that it was my problem because of the router. They wouldn't explore it any further. I bitched for about 2 hours until I finally got a decent tech on the phone that found that the Modem MAC and the Router MAC were generating 2 different IP's. The IP linked to the Router had a terribly jumbled config file at COX's end.

Was that 1.9 MB/s (megabytes) that you saw? They measured it in 16 Mb/s (megabits). There's 8 megabits in a megabyte.

I'm gonna pass on this; in my experience these programs are mostly useless. ..also, except for between about 6p-8p I can pull my full 16Mib that I'm supposed to have, so whatever.

@whoever was asking about "speed boost", it's a stupid gimmick that makes you think you have faster access speeds than you actually do. Basically it gives you a massive speed boost for the first 30 seconds. Where I am Comcast does it only on the upload, so according to most speedtest sites, I get ~6Mibps up instead of the 3 that I actually get. I found out one interesting problem with 'speed boost' a few weeks ago, shortly after getting connected; I had about 20 torrents paused, waiting to seed, and turned them all on at the same time. Well, 'speed boost' gave me the expected boost, and for about 20 seconds I was seeding at a total of ~6Mibps....then my modem crashed.... Apparently it just couldn't handle all those packets in that small amount of time :P

Holy crap you guys get some fast internet over in the states.
Here in Australia they charge your firstborn child for anything over 5MB/s download.
Not only that but you can't find an optic connection anywhere, it all has to go through copper before it gets to your place. It was going to cost something like $40 million (could be wrong) to improve everything but people complained. Meanwhile the government is planning on wasting something billions building a bunch of submarines that we don't need.

Can certain programs really speed up the computer and its Internet connection? Internet Speedometer McAfee is another tool that can tell you how fast or how slow your Internet connection is. Why don’t you guys try it? Maybe if you use it, you will see if using certain programs really improved the performance of your computer.

I wouldn't fully agree with that. There's admittedly very little you can really do to boost the actual download limit, but there's always the possibility of improving your own computers performance with software maintenance utilities. It's POSSIBLE but highly unlikely, that your network thruput could be compromised to the point where it's actually slower than your net connection - bear in mind that most wired connections are going to be between 10 and 20 times the speed of your internet connection so it'd take some SERIOUS issues to get that as a bottleneck (unless of course you have some off-the-scale internet connection). Wireless is a little easier to saturate depending on range but there's not a lot software can do about that.
