Project: New Mustang GT
So I want to make a casemod based on the Mustang GT but unlike Tech-Daddy's (amazing) it will be based on the new 2005 and up Mustang body. So I was thinking of putting a hood scoop on top, but i want to try and make it a little different than that one and I just saw aphexcloud's Chevy case with that as well so maybe i wont do a hood scoop.
Anyway I am thinking of putting the Mustang chrome horse logo on the front in front of the fanhole i will cut, and painting the case red, with black or white racing stripes down the middle. That is everything i have thought of so far i think.
So here are the goods I have so far:
My case: (Craigslist $10)
Got this today!!!: (Craigslist free!) Thats the grill from a 2000 mustang and a standard air intake thing... or something. anyway the exciting part is the chrome mustang.
More goodness today: Black & Decker Mouse sander (Home Depot $40)
And one more thing: '95 Saturn left rearview mirror. Got knocked off my brothers car so i grabbed it when he got a new one. I dont know what Ill use it for. No i am not planning to stick a rearview mirror on my pc, i meant just the mirror part! :lick:
So thats all for now. I have never made a worklog before and this is my second mod. (kind of) so I hope I am doing everything right!

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
This should be interesting. I love car-themed mods, and I've got the same case, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results. +sub

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Go go big dog! Do your own flavor of the mod! Sounds like you have a good plan!
As far as scoops go, if you want one, then do one! Just do it differently than others have done it!
I have another mod in my head (amongst all of the other things dancing around trying to push their way to the front and get into a mod...) that uses a different type of scoop...
It's still a scoop, and those will be used for ever!
Just because you have seen others do something similar, dont let that dissuade you if you have a bitchen design.
Go for it!

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Thanks man! So i'm thinking of doing a hood scoop like this one:
and not all the way across the top of the case. Ive got some bondo from my last mod but ill need some sheet metal or something to form it.
And i have a question: my case here has the right side and top stuck together into one big piece, and that all riveted together to the chassis.
so i wanted to paint the inside a solid color but i dont know how to do that without making it difficult when i want to paint the outside. I also dont want to un rivet the whole thing. I guess i could... but i dont want to. any suggestions?
also another weird thing is 3/4ths of the bottom comes off but the other 1/4th is attached to that right side and top piece! it was attached with 2 screws and 1 pointless rivet.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
FYI.. the new Mustangs have (optional) color changing gauges. Being an LED junkie, I would try and incorporate that somewhere. Another cool thing would be to emulate the front lights on the GT's. Maybe grab some clear 80mm fans with white LED's and find a fan guard that matches the housing on the lights.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Thanks for the ideas SgtM.
Ive sanded down all the panels now.. Heres the only pic I have right now.
More updates later hopefully.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
COOL... always love that car... what if you chuck in bits n parts from Shelby GT500 and the new 850bhp monster?
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I would love to do that but acquiring parts from a Shelby GT500 might be slightly over budget.
So I drilled out all the rivets holding the side panel on... only to find out everything is actually secretly connected to the side/top panel. The Motherboard tray and drive bays are like welded or glued to the panel. So now i have to try to bolt it back together in a few places because some places are inaccessible.
here is where it is stuck together. I would try to take it off that but then the whole case would fall apart. Mostly.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I cut a hole in the case and bondoed up the front panel. needs more sanding.
Thats a piece of pvc pipe in there.
Mmmm... Mustang
Im not sure if this hole is the normal size for the plate that snaps in there that came with my Motherboard, so i might need to do something about that... and there is not enough room for even an 80mm fan on the back here.
Im gonna be gone for a week so no updates for a while.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see the paint job.

Doesn't look like it.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
So, I know I left this project for about a year, and I'm sorry I didn't say anything about it, but anyway I'm back now, and this time I hope to finish it. I just started again and I have gotten a bit of progress. I noticed there have been a few sweet car mods in my absence also!
So here is the new workspace:
I made room for a 120mm fan on the back panel. Previously not even an 80mm could fit. I cut out part of the recessed area and flipped it around.
original is top left, and the other 2 are after the bondo and the fan hole.
Here is the front panel. I will be building in the card reader, and I have it positioned correctly so when I put it in it slides right up to the face of the reader that I bondoed in there.
You can also see my riveter in the background. It's quite handy.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Glad to see you're back. Looking forward to seeing this done. Love the car themes as well.
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I salvaged the card reader and the usb, firewire, and audio ports from an old Compaq that was laying around.
I am planning to have it all seamlessly integrated into the font panel.
The ports can fit inside the metal holder, and then line up with the plastic front part. But those don't fit inside a normal 5.25 bay. So I'll need to cut them down.
So I need to decide if I want the ports left aligned or centered.
I have made a helpful image to show each.

I think the right picture looks better.

I'd probably have to go with that one, as well.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I like the left better, and if you can do something good on the right with the extra space, that's even better.
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Thanks for the input, but I have actually already put part of it in place before I saw any of it :lick:. Anyway I left aligned it, much to the dismay of Cheron and nevermind1534. I dont know what I should do with the right space.
Actually the only picture I have of it is this one, in the far corner, but believe me I did a lot of work on it today!
Now, some pics of recent buys:
This is actually a gutter guard, but I think it will work great for mesh.
(Thanks NightrainSrt4)
Removing the hinges:
Also I think It looks kind of like a Mustang grill anyway!
Here is a clear plastic briefcase I found that I will use to make the window:
And here is a (Saturn) rear view mirror that I am planning to cut "GT" out of. Does anyone know how to cut a mirror?
Interesting side note: the mirror is mirror on both sides. 8)
Here are a few possible materials to make a hood scoop out of:
I was thinking the trash can but it is a bit floppy. Maybe I could reinforce it with the floppy sheet of metal.
As you may have noticed a lot of this stuff I had laying around.
More soon!

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
umm.. mirror.. cutting...
idk.. tile cutter?
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
To cut the mirror, a tile/glass cutter will do the straight edges - afraid I have NO clue how you'd go about doing the curves though... A file would probably just chip the hell out of it, or have no effect at all. Might be worth getting some scrap glass - a bottle or something and trying different things with that - WITH eye protection of course lol - I wonder if it could be ground down with sandpaper & block???

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I did some looking around...
You can get a couple of diamond attachments for Dremel, like this one,
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-545D-54.../dp/B00004UDI9
or here, for a better price,
http://www.ehobbytools.com/index1.html
I guess you can also get a diamond grinding attachment would probably be easier for the curves.
Or you could go fancy,

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Good work Joonce, good matching mesh for the theme too :).

Glad to see this moving again!!!

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I got my hood scoops for Superbee, Cuda 440, and Mustang GT350 on ebay
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Thanks everyone, and Mark thanks for the links. I think I may buy from here.
So if I cut with a normal reinforced cut off disk you think it will break? How about a grinding wheel or something? I guess I'll just try the diamond ones.
Chaos Theory I am just a moneyless 16 year old too! I guess I'm not totally moneyless though. But most of the materials I am using I got for cheap or free, and I can usually get my dad to pay for anything he thinks he could use, like drill bits, rivet guns, and saw blades. :)
If I cant make a hood scoop myself I may have to order one thanks TheGreatSatan. Also I had never seen your Mustang GT350 before, may I ask where you got the gold vinyl? I was thinking of painting a side stripe under the window, but vinyl would be so much easier and I can't find any on Amazon. I found this though I might get.
So I didnt do much today, but what I have done I present to you:
Drilled 3/8" hole.
Used ancient jig saw with new blade
Worked quite well, was really easy to cut the steel.
And here you can kind of see the side panel design.
I was planning on having a 120mm fan in the bottom left there, but that covers a lot of the window, so I stopped after the first cut on the panel to think about the design.
And that is all.

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
I'm back with updates.
Used some dremel grinding tools
Also every shape and size of file you could possibly need.
The side panel
The shape of things to come.
I cut a hole for a top fan.
The fan has to be on top of the case because it just barely wont fit with the psu and dvd drive in place. Plus all the wires from that.
I will be using a plastic trash can to create the hood scoop.
I realize now that I am going to need some air vents or something on top of the hood scoop if I want the fan to get any air. The tiny front hole just wont be enough. I might need a redesign.
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Like the trash can scoop. Looks good. Keep up the good work!

Re: Project: New Mustang GT
scoop looks wicked!
good work!

You might try to raise the front of the scoop by making a wedge shaped piece to go under the sides, that would give you a bigger opening in front.
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
or drop the front of the fan down to the level of the top of the case it should work at low RPM's
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
What about making the portion of the scoop that's over the fan out of mesh of some kind? Painted the same as the rest of the scoop?
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
Well I made some wedge shaped pieces like msmrx57 suggested.
You cant really see them in either of these two pictures but they are there.
I covered the framework with some more plastic and then bondoed over that.
Used masking tape to keep the bondo from falling through the holes.
I decided I needed more room for hard drives than only two bays, but my new front fan is in the way of the old second bay spot. So I drill some holes and riveted it to the side of the case.
Before:
And after:
The removable bay to the left goes inside of the one I riveted.
Now back to the hood scoop.
I did another layer of bondo.
That's all for today folks!
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
wow alot sanding comin ur way!
-
Re: Project: New Mustang GT
/\ what he said. take care when moving that man. all that bondo, it's gonna be heavy, and I fear of cracks

I currently have €10 (about $14) but I'm going to help my dad with some remodeling work so maybe I'll make enough money to do a mod, if I don't break down and get a meizu m8 that is, those things are nice!
