Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
with my case mod i got one of those nice little ultra 120 extremes, and i was ecpecting lower temps than im getting.
at about idle im getting 45C 42C 43C and 37C for my cores. its very odd how far apart my first and last core are when it comes to temperature. Im only running at the stock speed of 2.4GHz and i was thinking of overclocking until i saw the temps... :( if i remember correctly im not getting much cooler than my old stock cooler.
According to Artic Silver it may take up to 200 hours to "reach full thermal conductivity" so im not sure if thas my problem or if i should be getter better cooling. I have a pretty good fan on my heatsink at about 100 CFM and my case is cooled very well with 4 fans running about 85 CFM and 2 at about 45cfm
so idk what is up.
Ill be gone this next week so ill check then for your replies
EDIT: it also seems my core speed is fluctuating? its always happening, very odd. for example in core temp sometimes it shows at 2399 MHZ and other times 2401 Mhz and etc. Another program i have shows it fluxuating form anwhere from 1950 MHZ up to 2400 mhz...

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
you have speed step on (C1E in bios) which underclocks it while its not being used to save money and heat. if you are going to be overclocking shut it off so it will not mess with the overclock.
temps seem a bit high, change to another paste, MX-2 in my new fav. and remount. also consider another fan in a push pull config.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Yes, you are looking at around 250 hours for full conductivity. The paste needs to heat itself to set and if you put it together in the past few days you won't be at full yet. Download Prime95 and run it for a few days, 8 hours at least. It'll stress your computer enough to make a lot of heat and speed up the waiting period.

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Similar setup, Idling at 34-32c across the 4 cores. The temps aren't that high, but make sure you turn off your machine and 'thermal cycle'.

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
another thing i forgot to add was try the penny mod. as the picture below shows, put a penny or w/e under the bracket and then mount it. it will put more pressure on the cpu and should thus give better heat transfer.
here is the place i found it.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Interesting.... I wonder if it would work for me.... just one issue..... We don't have pennies here.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Any other small (in size) change that you can get? Yuo could probably use just about anything that you find about that size for it.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Well... if I bothered to clean up my room, I'd have a penny... but anyone got dimensions of a penny?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
A penny is 19 mm in diameter by 1.4 mm thick. sounds about right.
another place says 1.277
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
well the C1E fixed the first issue :)
As for heat, i did the penny mod... it took forever seeing as my bracket for my HSF slipped behind the motherboard, so i had to take it all apart. but i did it and notice a small if any difference

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
depending on how tight/hard it was to put the first penny in (i mean once it was in how hard was it to tighten the bracket down) then add another one maybe. otherwise lap it.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
it was pretty hard... i didnt get the screws in all the way, they wouldve stripped. I dont want to lap my CPU as i dont want to damage warranty.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
leave the 1 penny then. i meant lap the heatsink, not cpu, though lapping both should drop temps 5C or so.

You might as well import a penny, you guys have like 70 different active coins lol.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Actually here is a list of coins:
5c 10c 20c 50c $1 $2
Oh and the random 20c new zealand coin nobody wants.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
hmm, im not sure if i really want to Lap it, can you use sandpaper from anywhere or just the kits?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
this mod is being a huge let down. i did it also for cooling, which is now worse than before. i have more fans than before... all with higher CFM, yet hotter temps on everything. My GFX card is now reaching 80 C on STALKER shadow of chernobyl and it used to only reach about 72 on Crysis. i dont know what to do guys...

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
You have to be careful with fans around the CPU. In my Karma mod, I found that the 2 fans closest to the cpu needed to be reversed to help draw heat away from the heatsink.
Consider all the fans in your case working together to move air from front to back, bringing in cool air, and pushing heat out the back and top.
What case are you using?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
OK, I just checked out your case and your build.
The fan behind the CPU should be pulling air out the back, the fan above it should be pulling air out the top. The CPU fan should be pushing air through the heatsink towards the back of the case, and the fan on the side beside the videocard should also be pulling air OUT, not in.
Check orientation of these fans, and see if that helps your temps at all.
Also, your PSU fan should be blowing out the rear too. Any fans on the front of the case should be blowing air INTO the case. Also, since your case is on the floor, consider filtering any intakes on the case to prevent dust buildup inside the case. :)
I'll take another look at your build, and see if there's anything else you could do. :)

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
thanks for quick reply.. all of my fans are doing as you say except the side panel, ill see what i can do for that :)
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
If the side panel is blowing in, it's going to be forcing the hot air from the card to stay inside the case, rather then being pulled out, plus it's almost 100% guaranteed to trap heat below the card.
Are there any fans on the front of the case? Also, make sure there is a clear path from front to back as close to to the CPU as possible. :)

we have almost the same accept the 20 is a 25 and then 50 is no longer in circulation. and for some stupid reason someone brought up the idea of a $5 coin... seriously. enough with the coins.

i switched the fan around and actually my temp only lowered 1C from having the side panel off (62C) with the fan the other way around it was about 59C
I have 2 fans in front of case, both have filters. I just realized, when i put it together i put both HDDs on the rack RIGHT in front of the CPU, this could be a partial issue, ill look into it tommorow.
EDIT: about a minute after posting this the GPU dropped ot 60C without any changes. o_0

Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
i ran STALKER again, and the temps still reached 80C with sometimes going to about 82... :(
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
If possible, I'd add another fan lower in the front of the case, to push more air back towards the GPU, and leave the side panel fan pulling heat out.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
i already have a fan blowing into the GPU.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Could you try replacing whatever thermal material that is on the GPU with arctic silver?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
id rather not void my warranty D:
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
someone on another forum suggested i unplug my top fan and turn my side fan around to blow in again, and now with that fan at full speed my GPU idles at 56C and underload reached 74C in team fortress 2
there might also me a slight decrease in temps on the CPU
But im not sure if these are acceptable for OCing.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
chaning thermal paste on any part of the pc will not void the warranty. after all adding an after market cooler (which is fine) you would have to change out the paste anyway.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
If he has to pull the heatsink off the GPU to replace that thermal paste, I believe that would void the warranty.. would it not?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
Is even a way to tell that the cooler has ever been removed?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
well at least with Evga stuff you can change out the thermal paste. i was worried about it with my motherboard and i emailed them and said that yes you can change it. as well as go to third party cooling with the cards and motherboards. there would be a smaller market for after market cooling if you weren't allowed to change it.

the only thing they would see is that the thermal paste was changed if they even looked.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
You could always find similar paste, or if nothing else, get another one, and scrape it off of that. I don't know how muck difference it would make, though.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
i am not sure, i suppose changing thermal paste is an option. I may do so tommorow. Is applying it to a GPU basicly the same technique as a CPU?
And back to the CPU, is that temp acceptable to overclock?
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
You would apply the thermal past the same way that you would apply it to any exposed die CPU, such as an athlon xp, or an old pentium III.

what was the final cpu load temps you got again? (if you have it use real temp with P95 running on all 4 cores. )
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
well, from tests 1-3 i maxed at 55C on my first core and 49C on my last core.
-
Re: Q6600 + Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme
If the highest that you're going is 55°, then I think you're probably ok to overclock. Does your CPU cooler have a 4-pin plug for the fan?
