I had one do that to me. Is it a hp or compaq by chance? if it is try to run windows updates then try to install the driver.
I'm guessing it's integrated sound? If so look at the motherboard and get the model number. Go to the manufacturer website and download all the updated software (BIOS, drivers etc.) that should help.
sometimes its a bit hard to find model #s on mobos so if thats the case DL CPUz and click on the mobo tab to find the mobo model

^Agreed.. it's just a driver problem. CPUz will identify the motherboard for you, then it's just a Google away from the answer. :)
Going to device manager may also help you with the motherboard model number.
you should also be able to download the ac '97 driver directly from realtek.
Sometimes the manufacturers stuff around with the software though. I always get my driver updates from the manufacturer, just to be safe.

I have a c-media soundcard. I believe they are made by Asonic not realtec anyway.
If you lived in the states, I'd fed ex you a soundblaster.
Hell, I just might do it anyways. It's only collecting dust here. PM me some contact info, I'll find out how much it'll cost and we'll go from there.
If you want a video card from me, I could send you both for the cost of shipping, but I think the only low profile cards that I have are the ATI Rages. I might have a newer one than you, though. anything else you might need? Pentium 3s? Random cables? P3s? Dial-up modems? Pentium 3s? USB 1.1 cards? P3s?
Go for it Jeff lol ;).
In your device manager are there any devices with a question mark on it?
If so you need to work out what the device is and install the drivers :)
