Jon sent me a PM a while back regarding reporting spammers...basically dont do it, he said they find them quick enough, so dont bother. He basically said the report post button is for regular posts that are unfit for the topic, albeit rude, etc
That one actually slipped a bit.. had 40 posts by the time I banned him. It's usually not that bad. For what it's worth, I was driving to work when you posted this.
its ok, we'll forgive you....this time :devious: lol
I have had to place a filter on registration to my forums such that nobody with a @mail.ru email address can even register. I have a nice message that says "if you are not a spammer get a real email address and join".
However ... My original question remains unanswered .. there appears to be no report post button any more. Is there a preferred way to report posts other than seeing which mods are online and PM'ing them?
Matthew
I disabled the "report post" system because it is not very useful. The only thing it does is send an email to all of the admins and mods who check the forums more frequently than their TBCS email. I can't remember the last time it was used for anything other than spam, so I don't think it was heavily relied upon for otherwise inappropriate posts. I think sending a PM to a mod is a good way to go for those.
Thanks for the clarification Jon
Yeah, I've used the report post button once to report an inappropriate post. Other than that I've just spammed all your inboxes with my spam reports. Sorry about that.
What I've seen that people would use the report button, and feel it was necessary to tell the person that they reported them...
Remember folks.. this was the first spammer in probably the last 100 or so that got through and made a post. Right before posting this, I banned a 0 post spammer. Had a link in his signature. I really wish we could ban the .ru addresses, but it's not just them. A lot of these guys have gmail accounts now.
I've caught a few in the couple of months or so but yes, you guys do do a great job of getting them.
The point with the mail.ru domain is that it seems to be used exclusively by spammers. 50% + of my spammers use them and NO real members of the community do. If you search the database here I would be really shocked if you found a genuine posting modder with a mail.ru address but damn certain they are all over your spam logs.
Of course blocking .ru completely would be a no no, but if you can't find a genuine modder with a mail.ru addy in the DB you will cut spam registrations by blocking mail.ru only.

I have to jump in here to applaud our spam snipers, they are very effective, thanks. Very little destroys the enjoyment of a good forum like spam.
Here's one for you.

And, which thread does our newest spammer, wecaoniddmab891 chose to spam? This one, of corse. Runescape money, anybody? lol
Maybe we should use this thread to report spammers...
I'll start:

good plan
TBCS's staff is so heavily overpowered (in a good way) that we tend to catch spammers before they do any damage and tend to catch normal people who are stirring the **** pot not too long after they do it.
Hence, no need for the report button. Also, it's like Jon said, it just e-mails all of us and chances are by the time most of us get to our e-mail, it's gone already.
To prevent this from happening, anyone into finding an open-source "Captcha"-like program that supplies a random series of numbers for registration? I think it would save a lot of aches and pains in the long run.
There's recaptcha. You can use it with vbulletin.
We use a few better than this, unless someone's been mucking with the stuff I set up 2 years ago that asks a bunch of random questions.
However, we actually have a unique system in the works that may help to cut down Spammers. Well, we haven't actually started it yet but we're planning to, and it's the thought that counts.

lol If you think about putting your boots on before going out into the snow but don't actually do so I don't think it'll work out very well. :P
I think I prefer the snow analogy. I understand it.
