If you're using vista, it has one built in which pretty much does what I need called snipping tool. In the past, I used the screen capture built into paintshop pro or simply the print screen button. With those options available, I never really bothered with dedicated software for the job.
i use camtasia studio 6 but its like $300.

I use the "Print Screen" key and paint (or PS).
Good deal. I probably should have clarified a little more. I'm looking to do video, not still screenshots.
Ahhh lol - yeah that makes something of a difference lol - I hereby withdraw my suggestions and erm, well, can't help you as I've never captured on-screen video in my life - but I will be watching the thread in the hope of learning something new for if and when I do need to :P
there was a free one that I got off of download.com, dont remember what it was called but it was the top rated shareware one over there. :S it worked really well.
How could I forget about download.com? +rep for reminding me. This one actually works really well. http://download.cnet.com/Free-Screen...html?tag=mncol
I personally use Total screen recorder. There is a free 30 day trial and then you have to pay for it. The trial has every feature of the full version.
CamStudio free open source :santa: CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)
I've used it a few times and files sizes can be quite big as they are raw AVI but it's not really a problem if you've got a decent size HDD.
cant you just use fraps or rivia tuner?
My favorite screen capture software is “Camstasia”.
I use Fraps (I have the members version which was like 6$ back when fraps started, the members version lets you record more sources as well..)
Manycam is also another good utility to record your desktop thats free.
guncam is a good one for recording video games, though its not as quick as fraps.
But nothing is better then running a monitor output directly back into a PCI Capture card and having dedicated hardware recording and on the fly MPEG2 compression.
Normally I am using fast tone capture, it is powerful and lightweight. It also allows record screen activities and sound into highly compressed video files.
My favourite is screen hunter. It has many features than the other software’s and it’s also easy.
the best free screen cap program that I have ever used is Gadwin PrintScreen
it is very easy, and has tons of custom settings you can tweak any way you want... from file format, to hot keys, to file locations, to what kind of screen grab you want to use..
and its free.. i use it all the time here at work

BTW, Bluebird, I checked out Screen Hunter, it looks pretty cool as well..
FastStone Capture
This one is good for me .
and its same as other after 30 days trial you have to pay it and it worth
Fraps or BandiCam
Fraps and ManyCam here
(both the upgraded versions)
I use Smartpixel, an easy to use screen recorder and video editor 2 in 1 program.
