Question about components in my computer
Hi,
Im new here, ive been lurking around these forums and amazed by the stuff on here. This seems like this could be a good hobby for me and i'd like to try it out. so before i can do any of this crazy modding i have to learn how to build a computer. I got a book but i just wanted to have someone look and see if the components that i chose will work together and to see if theres anything better that you guys recommend.
so heres my list
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 ATX AMD Motherboard
eVGA 256-P2-N527-AX Geforce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4400CDBOX
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 (PC 3500) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model TWINX2048-3500LLPRO
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
ViewSonic VX2025WM Black-Silver 20.1" 8ms gray-to-gray (avg.); 16ms white-black-white (typ) Widescreen LCD Monitor
PLEXTOR Black IDE Slot Load 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Model PX-716AL/SW
Im pretty sure im gonna get the cpu, motherboard, ram and monitor if it will all work together. Im just not sure about the hard drive and the cd drive, and psu
o and on the 7800gtx does it have 2 dvi things on it??
Thanks a lot,
noto
Re: Question about components in my computer
umm....ya that's pretty noobish...ok you will actually get a whole lot more responses if you put up the links to the sites with all this jazz...no one on here (including myeslf) wants to go seraching for the specs. Secondly i'll tell you right now that if you can afford it get the 512 7800 not the 256, better inestment. Anywho get the links on here and as long as you help us to help you then there's usually an answer. alrighty :)

Re: Question about components in my computer
Why are you going with the 433 Ram ??
PC 3200 or 400 will save a couple of pennies and match the speed of the motherboard and processor (If you plan to look into OCing then its fine).
CD-rom .. Why do you need the slot loaded??
the NEC 3550A is a nice drive and I have 5 DVD burnners and 2 ove them are the 3550A and another is the 3500

Video card ..
7800GTX been bumped with the 7900GT with more Pipe lines
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150139
and cheaper .. if you want to spend what you saved on the CD-rom and put it towards the video card then get the 7900GTX
Personally I like Asus alot but I found my DFI mobo a better value over the ASUS one. DFI wants good quality ram and you have that picked out already.
Re: Question about components in my computer
^^^ what i would have picked. But i dont think that the 7900gt is a bump up in pipes, its just a smaller die and cheaper.
Re: Question about components in my computer
i agree with all of which all the above have stated, but if ur only gonna run i graphics card u could also go ati with the x1900xtx and as for dfi i would say asus would be a lot more user friendly for someone with no experience, also id look into the antec tpII 550w psu because i like it more and it has 50 more wats and ik its sli compatible, but then again the one u picked out might also be i cant remember. way to go for choosing amd asus and corsair, they all rock! by the way ur hdd is compatable
Re: Question about components in my computer
Just wondering..why are you going with AMD? Personally, I like Intel more.
Re: Question about components in my computer
@mszo... It's all personal preference. If he desires an AMD, then he'll get one. And vice versa. I don't mean to say that intel is dumb and you are dumb for suggesting buying an intel, I'm saying that if he likes it, then he likes it.
Re: Question about components in my computer
lol...I think you may have taken it a little too seriously. I'm not critisizing him, I'm just asking and telling my opinion
Re: Question about components in my computer
Yea I think I did. My bad man.
Re: Question about components in my computer
Ya i am going to get the amd because i saw the article on cnet where they compared the 2 dual core and they said amd was better. also how many watts minimum would this system need?? I also heard that EVGA is really really good. Im gonna listen to malorty and save some money on the ram and cd rom and get a
7900 gtx from evga

o and is this ram ok
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145596
is that hard drive good. i have no idea which companies make good hard drives. and do you think its worth it to go to the 10,000 rpm hard drive???
Thanks,
noto
Re: Question about components in my computer
o ya is xoxide.com a reliable place to buy stuff from?? i was thinking about getting the lian li pc-75b from there
Re: Question about components in my computer
Personally when i first got into computer i rember when a 486 was top of the range with 8MB ram and a 40MB HDD running DOS 6.2, but anyway, when AMD came into the market, they were a bit crap, but then they took over, first to hit 100MHz, first to get 500MHz, first get 1GHz and first 64BIT retail chip and first Dual Core.
But that aside, Intel's chips are better for Video encoding/Playback where as the AMD is better for number crunching, Intel is coded for OS/2 where as AMD is coded for Windows, so windows has to use more cycles when your using Intel compaired to AMD.
But its all personal choice.
The only diffrence between the 7800 and 7900 is the Die size, the smaller the process the colder they run, therefor the more they can be pushed, which is why the 7900 standard is 650MHz.
Re: Question about components in my computer
Legoman-Glad we could come to an agreement ;)
Xcom-I didn't know that, pretty interesting stuff

As long as it's at 7200 it should be fine. I mean, I do video editing, and 7200 has never let me down even with HUGE video's
Re: Question about components in my computer
id prob save money and stick to 7200 rpm unless ur a hardcore gamer. as for minimum wats for the pxu id say at least over 500 maybe even 550, cuz ur running two nice graphics cards, a dual core cpu and a bunch of other components. make sure ur psu is sli certified, runs dual rail 12v and runs a minimum of +12v @ 32-34A to ensure you can provide enough stable power to all ur components cuz thats a really high end sli pc that will crave power!
