artifcating.when cpu is overclocked.

hello everyone. im having some problems. i keep getting artifacting when i play games. this has been happening every time i overclock my cpu. i have a phenom 2 720 at 3.5. my video card isnt overclocked its set at stock. its not over heating. does anyone have any advice as to how the cpu causes these things to happen. this happens in 3d06 but not fur mark and my over clock is prime 95 stable i did prime 95 12 hours. im not sure if it matters but when i unlock the fourth core my third cores dies but the 0,1,3 keep going 2 dies.

If you have a triple core CPU, it's possible that the locked 4th core was locked due to instability. I was thinking about this yesterday, and how the manufacturers are recouping some of the losses of faulty chips by locking out cores and reselling them as lower versions, or locking their speeds down to stable numbers.

My first guess is that something's actually wrong with that core (I'm guessing it was the 'third' core that was locked, not the 'fourth'). The 3-core CPUs were originally made because they were 4-core's that had a bad core...I'm guessing that's what you have there. :( I'm not intimately familiar with any of the benchmarking software, but I'm guessing that 3DMark06 probably uses some hardware function of the CPU that FurMark doesn't.

my cpu isnt unlocked i will never unlocking because of memroy leakage and all that. i just want the aritfacts to go away.i have noticed tho when i play at 1280x 1024 in some games it artifacts and in others at lower settings its fine. but its alwasy at 1280x 1024.
i cant even overclock my video card at all without something artifacting.

I am not sure about this, but check in the bios to make sure that the pci voltages are not tied to any of the CPU voltages. It could be that you are unintentionally upping the voltage to the PCI bus and that can cause problems with the GPU.

no they dont all i do is up the multiplyer and the v core.

What are your temperatures like? Is it possible that the heat increase from the OC is causing troubles?

What about your PSU? Perhaps it cant keep up?

How much did you up the vcore and multiplier by?

And voltages (as luke said) could tell you whether or not it's the psu.

i thogutht that maybe the third core was bad but x88x already clarified that it dosent matter. the forth core is used. im using the apogee xt with artic silver. my temps load are around 30c ish. doign nothing my temps are 21c

If upping your Vcore is enough to kill your PSU, then you are likely underpowered anyways. ;)

The temps seem ok. Did you maybe not increase the voltage enough?

A very good point. However, if he's able to stress the cpu for 12 hours without issue, and the problem is only apparent as graphics corruption/artifacting, I'd really look to the GPU.

I'm with Airbozo on this one.. perhaps the bus speed is being affected somehow..?

So if you disable the OC, and return the cpu to normal operating speeds, the graphics corruption is gone completely?

my core is at 1.424v at normal its 1.312-1.328. i not over clocking my the fsb i just raised the multiplier. i loved the pci buss at 100. according to my bios thats normal.

i had the cpu at 3.3 for like 2 month becuase i took my loop a part. and i never had an artifact. but now i overclocked it to 3.5 the other day and i am seeing it alot.

and a asus 4870 dark nigh 1gb version.

just ran fur mark everything went smoothly. when i runt eh canyon test in 3d06 the one witht he little robots of mars i think thats the only place the artifacts happen. ill post a pic.

ok it varies . its not as bad as it was apparently. but i had bad artifacts the other day going right don't the cent of that test.

this is the game where i nocticed it today. i just started playign this game. and its the only game ive played so far since i have overclocked.

Are you talking about those blue lines? That looks more like poor coding to me.. hehe

oh well i thought those were artifacts because before when i over clocked my vid card and i ran rainbow six Vegas 2 that's all the entire screen was. but i seen those lines every where. but thank you for helping gme
