Honda ATC 200S Freshening Up

Scored a 200S as a freebie the other day. Been fiddling with it trying to get it going.

First I had to rebuild the recoil starter. It had been filled with water, and seized. I was able to hose it with blaster enough to get it moving. Then the cord broke. So I pulled it apart and gave it a good cleaning. Put a new rope in it. I ended up leaving the parts for the decompression out after realizing it was useless...

Then My Dad, and myself pulled it around with the lawn mower to try and get it going after the recoil starter couldn't. It started, but it was clear that the carb was gunked up. So I took it apart and it had jello inside it... I cleaned that out, and cleaned all the ports out with carb cleaner, and a air blower. Put it back on, but the fuel line was rotted so I replaced that.

We tried pulling it around again, but it wouldn't start this time. Pulled the plug, and it was fouled. So because I couldn't find one aroung the shop to stick in it, he (My Dad) used a glass blaster to clean it. After this it fired right up. :)

After riding it around for a minute I brought it back to the shop and adjusted the idle because it was VERY high. The adjuster wasn't doing anything on the carb so we checked the adjuster on the throttle lever. Sure enough, it was out of whack. Got that adjusted and it purred like a kitten. Then I put air in the tires, and tried it get the rear brake working. It was froze, but with some Blaster, it freed up. Although it still doesn't have any brakes... Need to fix that...

Gonna fix the brakes, and need to button up the recoil starter a bit. Then I'll fiddle with making it look good.

So far I've put about $1.50 into it. :)

Looks like the last owners parked it right after replacing the tires too. If they're not cracked up, they will last you forever!

Awesome! I love getting broken stuff for free and fixing it for a tiny amount. :D Much better than dropping several hundred or thousand on a new one. :D

Yep. :twisted: I pretty much plan to pick up the pull cable linked below, a spark plug, and a bit of paint and I'm done... If I run into the right deal I may pick up a new fender to replaced the cracked one on mine. Or maybe I'll Mad Max it with some screws and straps. :think:

Never used a steel cord before. I'm hoping the lack of "give" doesn't kill my hands.

After posting this I went out to try and take a spin. Road around for a bit then pulled it in front of the shop. Went to find the tire gauge and I heard it cut off. Went to start it back up and broke my temp cord. Then I noticed the breather tube was leaking gas. Float got stuck... I went out later and fixed the cord, and knocked the carb with a screw driver and it fixed the problem. Just have to run it and clear out the old gas. :)

Oh- And after I was sitting and looking at it for a while I noticed what it was that was bugging me. It is the gas tank. Haha, not factory...

Lol, nope, that looks like it was pulled off a streetbike. :P

I was thinking a '80's Yamaha. It has that flat cap like I see on them. None of the old Honda bikes I've seen, or have owned had a tank like that.

My grandparents had 4 of these things as i was growing up; a 70cc, 125cc, and a pair of 250's.

I've got the 70cc now, and my dad and I are going to clean it up and get it ready for the kids to ride when they are a bit older. (My oldest is 3, still a bit young for that.) :)

Congrats on the project, I wish I could find a free one for me! :D The first thing I thought when I saw that was that the tank was wrong..

I'd sure like to find myself one of the big old racers that they made just before killing the ATC's.. I think it was a 350cc, maybe a 300cc. I've seen a few around, they look great, and I know it would outrun most of the quads around here too. :D

My parents used to have a Big Red. Can't remember what model it was, but it makes mine look like a toy. Had reverse... Wish mine did... It was sadly stolen though. :(

Hey guys! A fellow on another forum was able to tell me what the tank was! It is a Clarke 3-gallon tank. :)


Bad news though. I found the 200 with a flat today. :( The right-rear had a small patch of hidden cracking on the inside. So I'm gonna try to figure out a way to fix that. But it took a while to bleed down, so I can still have fun with it.

The good news is today I went to start it. Turned the fuel on, pumped the gas a couple times, and pulled. It ran for a second then cut off. Pull it again and ran like a champ. :) I can't ask for much more then that.

Get some tire slime. They have it at Wally world. We had a riding mower that had a slow leak, put some slime in it hasn't gone flat in 2 years.

That was one of my two choices that were up front in my head. Slime, or get a tube to put in it. :)

Sorry about the double, but I just had some news. :)

I went out to a local farm with my Fiancee to put the 200 through the paces. With the known problems in mind it ran great. The engine runs like a top, all the gears are smooth, clutch is good, no problems! The brakes still need some work, and it could really use the front brake. But it wasn't a huge problem. I would just use the engine to slow it down when needed. I did a bit of trail riding, and flew around some dirt roads. Handled both just fine. I plan to take it back some time next week to give it another go. I'll bring a camera next time. Get some pictures, and maybe a little video tooling around.

Now I just need more power. :whistler:

Hello all! Got another ATC in the shop. This one is a '80 185cc. It belongs to my Uncle (Well, Great Uncle), and he wants it running again.

It arrived to me with the engine in a box, and the engine in a box... Did I mention the engine was in a box? Yeah, it was in a box... :D At least it wasn't in part, I guess...

First I pulled the plastics, and the fuel tank off. Then I poked around the engine, and cleaned the frame a little.

Tonight I painted the frame, and cleaned the engine up. I also put the exhaust back in, which I cleaned, and painted matte hi-temp black.

Tomorrow I will be getting the bolts together, and putting the engine in.

Sorry about the junk pictures. I've been working on it at night, and that combined with the fact that I'm using my phone leaves something to be desired...

Working on this also gives me some ideas for my own, and how I'm gonna do a Fat Cat conversion. I'm pondering a single sided, fixed swing arm that is extended at least 6".

Went out this evening more then prepared to set the engine in...So I thought. After looking through all of the bolts given to me with the 3-wheeler, it turns out none go with it. Or at least, none hold the engine in... :mad: On top of that, these two plates that hold the front of the engine are missing...

So, instead of working, I grabbed a caliper, tape measure, and pen. Using these fancy measuring tools, I figured up with the required length, and size of the bolts for the engine. Simple. When figuring out length, you need to make sure to compensate for the part, mounting tabs, nut, and any washers you are using. More is better then less... Size I figured out by measuring with a caliper in thousandths, then converting to metric. Wasn't hard to figure out what size I needed then. :)

For my tool guys, I picked up a couple new toys at HF. The Sensor/Injector socket set, and a 3lb Dead Blow.

Really wanted the socket set for sensor sockets.

Heard good things, and the only dead blow I have is a cast steel one... Figured out if you pop these little caps off at the end of the handle, there is a hole through the core. Good for hanging!

+100,000,000 to this thread, love 3 wheelers. My neighbor had one when I was a little kid and I have a lot of fun memories up to and including running into his fence and launching myself over it. Good times. Good times.

Strangely enough, 3-wheelers are one of the few things I haven't badly hurt myself on...

I went to the hardware store today, and got some bolts. Young lady behind the counter complimented my hand writing.:bunny:

Got back to the house, and one of the bolts was too short... Rats... So, I went ahead and tried to get the engine in, but ran into another problem. How in the heck am I going to get the exhaust in around the engine? It is like one of them nail puzzles... The proper way is a clamp right where the exhaust meets the muffler, but that is frozen tight. So, I'm going to have to figure our another way.

On a brighter note, here is a couple new tools. One of the now discontinued Earthquake air ratchets, and a Craftsman Premium 3/8 ratchet. Got the Earthquake was from Ebay, but I was screwed because it should have been a 1/2. I already have two 3/8 Chicago ratchets... The Craftsman I won in a contest. and its going to be the absolute worst day of your life when it comes down to changing that tire.


They sell plug kits at wal-mart for 15$ push twist and pull problem solved.

I would need a lot of plugs for a dry rotted tire! :D

hell if its the standard 4 square hub that four wheeler use, then golf kart and boat trailer rim/tires ought to work as well.


we used to steal the tires off of the boat trailers and smoke em down to the rim on our quads hahhaha.

If it's ultimate thrift time, i'd just tube them b@#$tches, But there ain't no tubing it once you run that liquid demon fix-a-flat in it.

I had no plans one way, or another for my three wheelers tire. Replacing it isn't a big deal, and tubes are no problem. I had originally mentioned fixing it simply because the tire was like new, and it was a shame to see all that good tread go to waste. Never was a cost, or ability issue.

Although, you do have me thinking now! After the Fat Cat conversion, I should pick up a slick, and take it to the strip!:D

Any brands, or keywords? I've found a bunch of nice golf cart tires, and the grass saver "slicks." The only other option I could find was going through Jegs to get a Jr. Dragster slick. At $120, I could do without...

I drifted it around a few turns, but no donuts. Mainly because of a combination of to much traction, and I never got a front brake hooked up. In fact, I barely got the rear working. Made winding out fifth in straightaways fun. :D

Approaching a turn with it wound up in second, and slamming into third to get the torque spike, and break the rear tires loose is always a blast!

I was messing around this evening looking at beach cruiser bikes, then I got to thinking about building a Bobber-style bicycle. After pondering that for a minute, it hit me. Why not make my three-wheeler into a Bobber while I'm at it? Yeah, if that doesn't give you a peak into the mess that is my mind, nothing will...

So, just a couple of thoughts on a Bobber ATC.

If you are like me, you like the low setting seat Bobbers. If you look at the design of the ATC frame, it is a great frame to do this to because the way the bottom tubes wrap up into the top tube.

I've also have a gas tank that has been hanging in the shop for probably ten years... I sat it on my Uncles ATC, and it is like it was designed for the upper tube of a ATC... I would just have to move the ignition pieces a little.

Another thought is a set of clip-on drag bars. As far as I am concerned, all bikes need drag bars, and the clip on bars sitting lower then the fuel tank screams Bobber.

One more idea is a jockey, or a tank mounted shifter with a push-pull cable setup to reach the splined shifter rod sticking out of the engine.

These features with some cool "Street" tires, and a single-side ridged swing arm setup should be MEAN.

The one linked is the same as the turf savers I found. Seems like my best bet is the DOT low-pros I see. They look decent. :)

Got the chain on, and fixed some connectors.

Tire off for more room.

After getting the chain wedged back on the rear sprocket, I loosened the rear axle bolts, and the adjuster. How it works is two top bolts that act as a hinge, and two bottom bolts that go through slotted holes. So the entire axle can pivot on the top bolts. Then it uses a threaded rod to adjust the tension like anything else.

Then I used a dead blow to knock the rust off, and move the axle forward. That allowed me to get the front sprocket with the chain on. Then, just installed the locking plate.

Then I went to the back and used the adjuster to get proper tension on the chain. After this, I locked it down.

Next, it was a matter of straightening the bent dust cover, and bolting it on.

Tire back on, and It it good to go!

Before calling it a night, I replaced a couple bad wire connectors. Note how one has the connectors going one way, and the other going the other way. This means that in the future, it'll be impossible to put the wires on backwards.

Pay dirt! Found some tires. Just did a bunch of random searching on Dennis Kirk, and ran into these Kenda tires. Name is a bit much, but they offer them in my wheel size (8") in a way larger diameter then the low-pro cart tires! The pattern screams motorcycle, too. Should work alright for dirt roads, too.

That really isn't a bad idea if you could find one of those front ends for cheap. I don't doubt for a second the strength of that fork setup. Considering back in the early days they used motorcycle hubs because it was the only things strong enough, I would imagine that front end to be pretty stout. The weak point is probably the brakes.

As for the ATC. I plan to leave it stock. My 200 has built in shocks, and way more rake then the 185 I'm working on. Not sure about trailing on a ATC setup, but it is going to be a rigid dirt bike with giant tires. How much can I really ask for?

ET Streets! Pretty close. Just never drive with them in the rain, and be ready to replace them after less then 20k on them. They hook though! I've seen guys pull the front wheels off the ground on the street with them!

I was busy this evening working on a Saturn VUE, and a Titan Gecko, so no time for this. :(

I did take a couple minutes to day dream about my 200S. I sat the Sportster tank on the 185, and pondered how it would work. Bad news is the back bone is to big for the tank. Good news is, it still looks cool! Also, if I cut the old tank mounts off the tank, it is the perfect length, and if I use clip on bars, I won't lose any steering. :D

You may notice as well that the back of the tank matches the frame perfect. The width is just right, and the way that the back of the tank flows down matches the frame. Pretty sweet! :up:

I also made up a basic list of ideas for it. Just the basic features.

-Single-Sided Rigid Conversion (Using DIY4X Hub Kit)
--Requires either a jack shaft, or a redesigned output shaft sprocket
--Custom disc brake from Junkyard
--Few inches added to wheelbase
-Low Seat (Roughly 4" lower then the current frame hieght)
-Clip-on Handle Bars (With Red Billet Twist Throttle, and Skate Board Grip Tape)
-Sportster Gas Tank (Mounted On top of back bone)
-Kenda "Speed Racer" 22x10-8 tires
-Snap-on Hard Handle Jockey Shift

Missing a paint design though. I was thinking a black bike, with a couple pieces of red. Red twist throttle, and a red Snap-on screwdriver handle for a shifter. Maybe red for the exhaust pipe. Which will be a slightly larger OD pipe following the down tube, and dumping under the bike.

Maybe a red 666 on the tank to replace the "Almost Heaven" air brushing someone had.

The singled sided arm isn't looking good. But I may have found another option. If I used some 2" ID DOM tubing, pressed in some 2" OD DOM, and used 52mm OD bearings, I could easily make a hub that'll work. 52mm=2.047". Close enough that I can hit the inside with a sanding drum to make a nice press fit for the bearings. The ID of the bearings are 25mm, which is 0.984", Close enough that I can turn a shaft down. The total cost will be $87 for bearings, and material, but I'll have a bomb proof hub, that I can easily get replacement bearings for.
