Battlefield 2 L.A.N. PC.
First off, im new to the forums so hello to everyone.
Ok, I recently stumbled upon an old army cooler that made me think doing a battlefield case would be rather cool. My only problem is I cant figure out how to implament battlefield in the case. Im going to put in military switches, convert the front and back into hinged doors and, install sheetmetal for a flat surface for the 6 inch lcd screen, control panel. The lower part of the front will be left for a fan and a hidden cdrom drive. All the hardware is pretty much figured out I just need some cool features for the theme. Bullet holes seem to be along the lines but that just isnt enough for another person to say "hey that case is a battlefield theme." There is a lid to this thing and it has al lbeen gutted. My mind just isnt as creative as i had hoped with this project and any help would be greatly appreciated.
ps- this case is ment for lan so durability is a must.
DIMENSIONS: 19 3/4in. long, 9 3/8in. wide, 13 1/8in. high
Dan, yes the geek.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
this is how I plan on setting up the harware and the overal look of the case. I just need some advice on some ways to make this a battlefield theme. Also do you think it is a bad idea to have a cd-rom drive vertical? If so I would apreciate any suggestions about the placement.
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Wow! Pretty good work!
I really doubt a vertical drive will work well, unless it is made to be vertical, the tray need some ''holders'' for the disk to remain on it. What about placing it under the front switches and making a customized cover?
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Yeh the vertical drive wont work (have tried it before and dier consiquences!)
You could have it at the bottom (above the hard drive) with 2 samller fans to cool the hard drive? then on the front a little flip down bit where the tray comes out

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
For a military theme you can't go wrong by taking a look at http://www.creativemods.com/content/view/275/39/

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Hey thanx for the reply. I didnt think putting in a vertical drive would be a good idea (thanx for reasurring me) so i am going to make a flip down panel on the very bottom of the front that hides the drive. I cant install it in under the front door because i just dont have enough room inside the case. It will hit the ram and most likely not help coolin, if you know what i mean. This is going to be an air cooled system because it will be for strictley lan use. Ill probably make the front door a little shorter sence i really dont need much room for a 6in. lcd and some switches. That will also alllw me to use a 120 mm in the front like I had hoped. Ill have to play with sketchup a little more to be sure. Oh the frame inside of the case is going to be removable, via the top, so working or upgrading this thing wont be such a pain. This frame will hopefully house a full atx motherboard and powersupply as well as the hardrives.
Thanx agin for your replies and more are welcome (hint hint)

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
nice....wish I could tackle a project suck as this!
Edit: Meant to say "such" instead of "suck"
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I'm not sure about the dimensions in your Sketch Up, but since your design has curves in the front and back, you might be able to slide the inside frame back till it hits the curve. Or maybe not all the way back so that the cables can fit. But maybe enough so that there is increased space in the front, you should be able to fit your CD drive.
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I have never had an issue with my vert mounted dvd or cd roms. Most newer cd/dvd trays have the little clips in them that hold the disk in while the tray is closing. Both of the drives I have in my system were at one time verticle (whole case was rackmounted sideways), and I just checked the other systems in my house and they all have the clips.
EDIT: Now you got me curious, because while I have mounted the drives on thier side I have never tried the orientation you show in you diagram. I now have mission to try this because I have a spare cd drive to use and lots of old cd's...

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I think I may do something like this. What do u think? (thanks for the front door idea). It will be placed all the way to the left to stay away from the motherboard and give room for some usb ports.
Yes that big white box on the bottom is the powersupply, I couldnt find any other place taht it will fit and still give me a rear case fan and not hit the cpu fan or be right over top of it. its okl on the bottom I guess?? Atleast it wont be the only thing you see from the top window!!

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
That whole design looks the business! The local of the PSU shouldn't really be too much of a problem as long as you take into account 2 things. 1) The wall socket cable that plugs into the bottom of the case in your design. 2) The fans wouldnt be obstructed in the case. As long as the bottom has enough room to route a thick power cable, and enough distance from the floor to get good exhale from the PSU, then it should work fine.
Plus, repaint it like it was to begin with but minus the fact the paint was lead, that paintjob would have been sick for a military design!:D
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Note: lead paint is only dangerous if you eat it. Small children seem to think it taste's good :)
I like your idea. I'll fallow the progress.

Dont use a regular drive then... use one of those drives where you feed it in. Like in a car. Problem fixed ^_^. But it looks better how it is right now if you ask me.
Very cool looking mod so far! This isnt your first time making a 3D model is it? lol

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
This case is my first experience with sketchup but i have used CAD a bunch of times.
I started cutting out the plates that go behind the front a rear doors. It takes forever with a dremel. I need to find a jig-saw.
This is the basic idea for the back of the case. The tabs will be bent and the plate will be rivetted to the case. (helps with the militay/battlefield theme.) I figured I would start on the back to learn the best way to do the front.
SHould I use the same color for the case or go with a desert camo? Desert camo represents BF2 more then a plain olive green. What do u think? Although, the olive green that it was painted with was pretty cool. Maybe I should have left the paint on there???? It was some strong stuff, took me almost 3 quarts of paint stripper and way to many hours of work.
Im still having a mental block trying to think up some ORIGINAL ideas to pull off the Battlefield look. I figure I will throw on some rust and keep all of the dings in the case to help it along. I could use any suggestions if you have some. (normally I am not this questioning/needing ideas from others I just cant figure this one out.)
Thanks again for the replies, it makes the forums worth coming back too.
-Do you think this should go under the worklog threads? I seem to be updating my mod for then asking questions lol!

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
This case is a really really awesome idea, if i had one of those boxie thingys I'd concider making one (even though i dont like BF1942, and havnt played BF2 [yes i live under a rock on the moon])
Nice work, and awesome creativity

LOL Ive got a Pentium3 in my house, but Ive managed to play 3 times BF2 already... outside of my house, for sure :) Two times at a LAN Party where they have their own computers (so no need for me to play only Warcraft3), and the other time at my cousin's rig.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I've got a bit of an Idea for your DVD drive. Leave it at the bottome of the case, but move it as far forward as you can, Then Only cut out enough metal for the Drive tray. Now build a set of rails from the front of the tray to the peice you cut out. Basicly it's Stealthed just a little deeper in. You'd have to look and see how close you could get the drive to the front as you'll need the tray to stick out atleast 1/2 way so you could insert or remove disks. But if your dim's are right in Sketchup then it should let you get close enough. Let me know if you want a drawing to explain the Idea.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
A stealthed cd rom drive would be cool but the only proble is the area where i would have to stealth. It is quite curved and has a few other obsticles like the motherboard. I only have a 1 3/4 inch gap between the cdrom drive and the side panel. That means I have to fit the motherboard tray and the motherboard in that gap with some room to spare for the power and led connections.
Heres some pics
Do you think I have enough room for all of that?
Heres a pic of the back plate that is still onder constuction. I also have to add the back door on.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Well I have decided to start up this project again sence I have som tax money:twisted: (thank you federal government.) I dont have the pics for the missing images so Ill try to post some newones asap.
Just to recap on what has been done:
-Pain..,, I mean paint removed (alot of work i might add):dead:
-The rear and front doors cut and remounted.
- ahh.. I guess thats it lol.
A|Ill add some pics later tomorrow to show where im at.

Admin: feel free to move this to works in progrees if needed.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Here are the pics Crimson. lol
These are of my design I did in sketchup almost 6 months ago. It has a removable frame from the back(almost like a removable MB tray but everything comes out except the power and accessory buttons, front fan, and DVD ROM.
Ill take some pics of the actual case later and try to post them to show my progress. Thanx for viewing

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
There we go...really very cool so far.
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Those designs look bitchin'. I especially like the gizmo's and gadgets behind the door! That tied it all together really nice I thought.
Aren't you blocking off some of your motherboard with the PSU down there? **Nvm, your back panel through me off, but it appears that your motherboard is above your PSU. ^_^
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Yeah I will be using a Micro ATX MB but expansion slot area is deigned for a full atx in my sketchup. I just got lazy and didnt feel like changing it from my old design. Thanx everyone for viewing. Ill post some real pics tommorow hopefully.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Here are the pics as promissed. I had to borrow a camera, my olo one was acting up. Oh well.
The case looks very scratched up but it is just the flash. I also want to note that the crome molding will be sanded and painted. Its not on atached well either, just a little glue, but It will get the royal treatment on the final attachment. It will also follow the edges of the case more evenly.
Thanks agiain

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
It's wider than I thought. You did a good job on the rivets and molding.
What's the vents on the back going to look like? Are you going to have two ducts, one for the PSU and one for exhaust?
One more question: how are you going to get the parts in? There's no side panel door. lol
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Well I plan on using the top as an access to the parts on the inside. I hope to have the motherboard tray removable by only a couple screws but we well see:rolleyes: .
As for the rear vents for the PSU and FAN... Im not sure lol. I did plan on drilling a few holes in the rear door and the bottom and top of the door is open to allow for exhaust. Besides that Im not sure. Any suggestions would be cool.
Thanx for the comments, I love the look of the BIG rivets, almost tank like in person. The molding will be sanded and painted the color of the case. I will probably flatten it a little more so its not quite as rounded, and it will deffinetly follow the lines of the case( I like crisp edges.)
Well it looks like monday will be the day to start this agin. I hope to build most of the inner frame then.
Thanx again, Dan The Geek
Oh almost forgot, I did a little more tweaking with my sketchup and decided a full atx MB is a must. This also shows how all the doors should work when finished.
How do I move this to works in progress?
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I like it! It should look good when all finished.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Well I got a bit bored a few minutes ago and decided to see if I could make a ruff design of what I hope for in the final paint job.
This is what I came up with. Used a bit of filtering and airbrush with gimp
Im not sure how i will get the effect:think: .
Well jopefully tomorrow ill stop waisting time with pictures and start on the real thing ;) . Oh well..
Any comments welcome.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
I would get a toy army helmet from a toy store an bondo it into the top an make a blow hole out of it.Get some novelty dog-tags and place them some-where.
-
Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Hey that sound pretty good. I dont think I can do a blowhole though because this thing has a lid that I hope to use as storage; like the power cord, vga cable, etc. I did think about flipping the MB so its like a BTX setup. This way I could get and internal WLAN card and have the antenna stick out of the top. Oh well,, the dog tag idea ill have to use though. +rep for that.

I have a paint solution for that effect.
Base coat: Flat Black
Top coat: OD Green
Use the paint designed for camo applications, that will be your best match to the actual colors used by the military. After you put the green down, it's time for some wet sanding. I'd recommend something like 400 grit. It's just enough to take the green off a little, but still fine enough that by the time you see the black, you won't go all the way through it. Remember that edges will have the least amount of paint on them so, you want to go a little heavier on the black than on the green (2:1 ratio).
Or, if that's too much work, you could consider just painting the can green and then dry brushing with black.
Make sure you clear it with a flat clear coat. That will protect the paint, but it won't be glossy.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Battlefield has to be THE BEST SERIES EVER!!
I honestley look forward to completion! Don't give up or else I won't stop bitchin' at you.
What I would like to see is it given a camo paintjob, but one that looks old and sturdy like its been in war. I could already imagine it. +rep

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Here's what your looking for. The effect ya'll are talking about is called washed out.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/fe...?article-id=36
Check out the other painting articles on this website they are pretty good. These techniques are for models therefore they usually don't clear coat at the end, but I would. I think the worn look with a clear coat, although not realistic, still looks wicked cool.
These techniques are explained in depth and sound a little advanced but just use the basic guidelines for the colors and layers and you can still get a close looking effect with spray paint.

Re: "I need some help on battlefield mod!"
Thanx sgtm for the idea for painting. I think Ill have to give it a try.
Guardian, Dont worry Ill eventually finish it but if you look on the first post ive been slacking off for a while.
Commando, thanx for the ideas with painting but im stuck with spray paint. I might be able to get some of those effects if im careful.
thanx again, oh and I have a little surprise for everyone.. It may have something to do with a detachable bag.
