So, how about, we all design one case mod, then a trustworthy person assembles it (from community donations of money/parts) then we raffle it off, or ebay it?
It would be a cool idea, to see what could be done when we all think together.

Wow thats not a bad idea. Maybe the money from the auction could all go to charity and everybody donates money for the project out of the kindness of their heart. I would be willing to chip in some money if it is for a cause.
I like the idea.
I've got some RAM, a server mother board... a celeron 904pin proc.... all picking up dust.
lolz ok just a lil tid bit but isnt a community PC a lil contradictory due to the fact PC stands fer personal computer :P :P :P
lolz not to rain on ur parade :P
best wishes fer christmas from CHiMaERA
I have tons of parts to donate as well--mostly watercooling parts:
Maze4 blocks
Radiators
Reservoirs
I got a DVD drive to donate and maybe an HDD to.
I have always wanted to do a project like this - in fact I currently have a charity case in planning. I just need some more sponsors to jump aboard..
I have a
MSI Neo Platinum SLI mobo (socket 939)
MSI 6600gt PCIx
500 Watt XG Magnum Modular PSU
so far I can donate these ALL NEW IN BOX parts--if you guys want to build on that, I'm sure some needy kid would love it. Maybe we can work together with the "Make A Wish Foundation". (their servers are fubar at the moment) I can call them on Monday and ask :)
we would need:
AMD Processor (skt 939 w/heatsink)
HDD (SATA)
RAM (DDR 400)
DVD CDRW combo Drive (or better)
OS
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
My HDD is out and my DVD drive is only a DVD CD Reader.
Well if we all put say little bits together, im sure we could get something fairly decent. Ive got a variety of fans, cables, and a few other things lying around. THe parts don't have to be necessarily knew
I have a 80gb sata drive and a dvd cd/rw (or 2) and a floppy I can donate. Mostly new, just removed from a dell because I needed a larger drive and a dvd/rw. I also have the nero software that came with the dvd drive and blue or red sata cables.
EDIT: I have an older 20" sgi monitor that I could donate, but the weight of it would make shipping costly.
I have a case (ATX/generic/beige, no PSU) sitting in my garage I can part with. Might look decent given a paint job and maybe a window with LED fans.
With all these parts... we might end up with a super computer of some sorts...
We need a subwoofer... or two...
I have a set of speakers. If this is gonna go ahead, we should ask DaveW if we can have our own forum, to keep our clutter out of the rest of the forum.
...forgot, that I also have a SB audigy2, brand new to donate to this effort.
Well, we need some designs for the case. Any suggestions?
Well, you've obviously piqued Paul's interest. All we need now is someone to do the actual construction and all the work! Being in the UK there's only so much i can reasonable donate due to shipping costs, but i can help to draw up some designs and write PICs to help handle the electronics. They're small enough to ship.Quote:

So the big question is...does anyone here have what it takes to stand up and take this job?
This project would be amazing, and if it went ahead, I'd do everything i could (pull out all the advertising stops) in order to make sure that it got the attention it deserves.
So if you want to volunteer...you're going to have a lot of people looking up to you. Then again, people in different places could do different parts, and send them in.
Personally, I'd like to see someone like Paul himself do the actual build, if not someone who's been around and knows their stuff. If you feel like taking the reigns bud, don't forget that you're a connected guy and can really pull everything together nicely!
Don't let me force your hand, but man i want to see you do this now.

I have a socket 939 AMD 64 X 2 (4400+) with heatsink.
lol...and what will you be giving away?Quote:

wow.. with all this interest, we could put together a couple pc's for the cause. i think there are a fair number of people willing to jump on the chance to give parts to a good cause. ive a got an athlon 3200 64bit and abit nv8 mobo i could donate ....
I'll find time to take on the build, let's start a Master Component List based on what we have and what's still required. The Processor will come in very handy, thanks JB!
Let's also think about themes--my first vote is for WoW, even though I don't have the game I think it would be cool.
WoW themed would be pretty cool, and with your modding expertise, I'm sure that it will definately have it's share of niftyness.
If you need any information about WoW, I'm your man to ask, too =]
if you're thinking of the medieval type stuff... project offset is something to look at. im not sure if there are any really good pictures, but it seems to me there were a few good shots of stone architecture.
http://projectoffset.com/
ive been following that game for a while now. its still in development, but it looks like a killer.
I dunno, ive already seen a couple WOW themed cases. Id like to see a case based on something futuristic... shaped like a mech from battlefield 2142. hmm?  :)
You've already seen WoW themed mods? I'd be eager to see them, then =]
I loves me WoW.
Anywho, Almost anything would work. I mean, we're talking about the great Paul Capello, here. (Did I spell it right, Paul?)
Here's some ideas:
A devastated city themed mod, with semi-wrecked buildings on it and simulated flames and smoke
a game-themed mod, such as WoW as Paul suggested, perhaps any of the BF games, maybe something vague and unique like darwinia?
a hardware-themed mod, like make the computer put emphasis on or look like a single component or a few components
That should be plenty to mull around in your head for now.
Has anyone seen the "American Chopper: Eragon Bike" episodes yet? I was watching that today and had alot of inspiration come out of it that was computer related. Maybe do something like that? If Paul Capello has taken charge of building the case, then I say lets try and get the most out of him as this is a chance of a lifetime. After all, he IS Paul Capello! You would have to be an average human who doesn't know a lick about computers to not know that name!
Of course we should wait to see if the movie is a big success or not first. I thought doing a Narnia theme computer would be cool, but the movie was kind of disappointing. But if it is anything like Lord of the Rings then I think it would be a great foundation for a mod!
WoW would be a great theme for a computer mod. It's something that everyone knows and has a very high popularity rating. It also reaches out to a pretty wide range of age. 14-40. Out of the idea's so far, I say that one is the best so far and is most likely to be a sure fire win mod.

Well, I originally had a pretty neat idea for a case I was going to do, but the sheer amount of work to get it made is what put me off. I was thinking of a sort of cylindrical case. Its hard to describe. Ill have a go with google sketch up, see what I can do.
I'll start a new forum for this, and move this thread in there. It's a pretty big project, and now that Paul's at the head of construction, i'm willing to pul out all the stops and contact all the press (once things are underway) to make sure the highest amount of people know about it for the actual auction.
I don't think i've ever seen anything quite like this done before, it's a great idea. I'm looking forward to this!
-Dave
I know it aint much but im poor at the moment lolz ...ive got mass amounts of Fans and other random crap lol
I still have a case I can give up. I'll see what I can do about getting a picture up.
I wouldn't mind building this.
My design is going nowhere because my sketchup skills suck :P Im gonna attempt to draw it out somewhere.
Edit: Ill attempt to describe it.
Basically, its a cylinder, where all the components on the inside. On the top, its sort of domed, and its bolted down with hexagonal screws. In the middle there is a "popup" connection bay (you press it down, and then it rises, bit like a cassette deck), with the power and reset buttons, and a plethora of connections. Its meant to look vaguely like that little zapper thing Tommy Lee Jones has Men In Black.
The bottom is basically the same. The Cd drive is flush mounted into the side of the case, either with a tray, or slot loading.
Its something ive thought of for a while, but I just can't draw it out.
I think its meant to resemble the computer in Resident Evil, which rises from the floor (think thats where I got the idea from). Ill have a watch later and see if I can get some pictures of it.
When I bought my case, I got an optical mouse that changes 6 different colors. If you guys think that'll fit in, I got the box and everything; perfect condition.
ive got a spare x300 vid card ...pci e....and a spare 5900xt agp.....both are 128 mb cards if needed
Wow, so this is actually going to happen, eh. I probably have some things laying around.
I have a
MSI Neo Platinum SLI mobo (socket 939)
MSI 6600gt PCIx
500 Watt XG Magnum Modular PSU
Switcheroo Color Optical Mouse (Donated by Mitternacht)
939 AMD 64 X 2 (4400+) with heatsink (Donated by jdbnsn)
we would need:
AMD Processor (skt 939 w/heatsink)
HDD (SATA)
RAM (DDR 400)
DVD CDRW combo Drive (or better)
OS
Monitor
Keyboard
Updated
I also have all kind of IDE cables, never used. But, I don't know if you guys are gonna use the thin, glow-kind of cables or not, so let me know.
Edit: Where should I ship it to?
We;ll figure out where to send all the stuff in the near future.
