Mouldable lightweight clay-like substance

Can anyone recommend any alternatives to clay? Clay is way too heavy. Preferably should dry by air instead of firing or anything complex, and can be easily moulded or sanded into shape. Price should also be reasonable too, because I will be using a large amount.

foam + a skin of bondo? or would you be doing small details?

Milliput is great, it comes as an epoxy, you mix the two parts and then mold it, its not for huge areas, but when it dries its like rock, you can sand, drill cut it etc. Its great stuff. i used it on my HAlf life 2 case mod.

Maybe you could make a mold and then fill it with expanding foam or something.

You could always do.... Papier-mâché! :D

That stuff dissolves when certain paints are applied.

Thanks for your replies, I think I'll use papier-mâché, because it's the cheapest while still being practical for my purposes. Plus I can get my hands on it quicker and get to work on my mod soon.

all I can say is ... erm you aren't the first person to ask that ... lol ... actually some of my friends make that joke - a lot - but no I don't ... I shall now shame myself entirely by pointing out that I have never even seen a dremel ... except in photographs :D

Remember you could use a combination.

You could use the expanding foam to get the rough size, then paper masche over the top.

It would be lighter than just the paper masche building up depending on how big you plan to go.

Paper Mashay (Yeah, I know that's not how it's spelled, but I don't care) is heavy.

For fine detail on models, I use the green stuff, I used to play Warhammer a lot. And I recently rediscovered this stuff. From my experience, this stuff is great for fine detail.
