What to do with the old Harddrives?
Well,
over the last few years, I've managed to aquire several low gig harddrives. While I could dump a distro of Linux on them, and bring ancient machines back to life, I just found them gathering dust. Sooo, I broke a couple open to see what they looked like. Then I had pieces all over the place. The wife wanted them gone, so I trashed most, but then had a brain hiccup. While this isn't a mod, it's something to do with leftover components. I'm sure the brains will start ticking eventually, and I'll come up with something else.
Yes they spin. Three screws to hold the spindle to the board, then pressure holds the plates in place. Highly reflective, they can be used as a mirror. This is going up above my desk, so I can see who's coming up behind me.
Re: What to do with the old Harddrives?
I have a small laptop hard drive that i thought about trying to convert in to a compact mirror. Like the things girls carry around. I don't really know how to do it but i might figure it out someday. I was thinking of giving it to my Gf.

Right. I have that old 286 I bought. Haven't done anything with it yet, but it has two 20GB drives in there. They won't be IDE, so they're probably huge...

When I was doing my NVQ, we had an old HDD (like about 300Mb old...) and it would have made a cracking anchor..... was mahooooosive.
Would have made an effective weapon, too....

I can see it now: a geek samarai with HDD disks with sharpened edges instead of throwing stars. lol :D
Re: What to do with the old Harddrives?
Ummm,
Already thought of that. There's not enough mass to make them effective.

Back at tech school I invented a game called platter rolling.
Hard drive platters will roll for a long time down a street or hallway if tossed right.
The game was to see who could get them farther, or to bounce the highest and continue to roll after landing.

I was more actually thinking of sticking it in a sack and swinging it...
Re: What to do with the old Harddrives?
Back at Mc Donnell Douglas we used to throw these (the large one);
Off the top of the hangar to see who could get them to fly farther...
Phear my disc throwing skilz!
