Home Server.
Hey guys I am setting up my first home server and I have no idea what I m doing. SO far I have windows 7 ultimate installed. MY goals for this server are getting remote assistance and being able to acess the computer and all my files from the web. Im just wondering what software to use to do this. I tried File zilla, amachi, apache, log me in, and rdc. Any help would be great thanks in advance.

Re: hoem server.
Try looking up Ubuntu Server Edition. There is good documentation on their site. I don't know much about servers either.

Re: hoem server.
Ubuntu is the easiest to learn. That's the reason behind that particular distro. It's also free. You can run it off of a CD to try it out first. They have excellent documentation available and online help. For a server, that's the way I would go.

Re: hoem server.
If you DO choose to go the Linux route, I'd recommend Lubuntu. Lightest one out there, making it great for servers. (short of the no-gui route).
Just fool around with it. Look through the menus, see what everything does.
If you ever need help, you've got Google, then us.

Re: hoem server.
Amahi, is the linux equivalent of WHS. I have no experience with it yet, but have been told good things.
I run WHS 2011 and it is very easy to setup. I used to run V1, but needed some functionality that the V1 did not have (media streaming to remote devices).

Re: Home Server.
If you're looking for remote desktop software that works with Windows 7 I use Teamviewer for all of my systems. It has a very nice ipod/iphone app and it has a browser login as well. I have a file server I just rebuilt running 7 and it is currently holding all the Music, Photos, and I have my entire DVD collection on on of the drives, so with Windows 7 I have the Media Center option that turns the 360 into an extender and I have everything I want right there.
