the Box
lets spin this shi+.... :D
i'm gonna make my own case from square tubing 20 mm wide
and because my english is not so good you will just have to watch the preaty pictures:
http://www.dragonworks.info/CAD-CAM-...e%20tubing.jpg
the motherboard is gonna sit in the uper part of the case, the psu, hdd, cd-rom in the lower part
the thingy with a red grove in its a pice of square tubing with redd LEDs in it, i will have 3 or 5 of them one over the other (something like this )(this on the side of the case )

(i did not make them with sketchup because i twisted my brains for 2 hours to make this thing as it is)
but i have a problem(until now :D) i cant fine a proper hinge, i want to have ring of plex around the joint, all around it, and a dont wanna have a hinge sticking out in the front, what you guys think

Re: the Box
Hey man nice case but you should put more leds on the real one...I like the idea. Maybe you should put an LCD screen in there too.
-
Re: the Box
piano hinge would be the cleanest and has the lowest visible profile possible.
-
Re: the Box
this is how it should look
10x for the piano hinge but it aint gonna work, i need something that folds inside of it but im dried off of any ideas:?
-
Re: the Box
considered cupboard hinges? you know the ones that are not visible from the outside but DO take a fair bit of space on the inside?
they might work, this is similar to an idea I had but not done yet (was planning to put the PSU sideways so it had a lower profile and drew air from outside the case to cool itself), I currently suck at (lack tools and experience) working with metals so have not done it yet:P plus my plan involved the Al fly screen rather than perspex.
Nice looking idea tho :D

Re: the Box
think i found my hinge:
see the hood hinge, my single question is this: i see it has two metal parts and that compresed air thing(the litle two black rods) BUT does it have any other part that is not visible:? :? :?
-
Re: the Box
look up those things to be sure but it looks like it probably has another HUGE bit underneath for at least one par of the metal things to attach to.
*I THINK the back pair of metal things are actually curved and either running through a track thing or attached to some kind of pivot.*
are these hinges just for when you are working inside it or do you plan to have it open frequently?
-
Re: the Box
no, that's all you need, the hinge thing and the rod-thing. Be sure that your construction is sturdy enough to take the forces.. those rod can be very powerfull, or you should get some that have less power...
-
Re: the Box
the whole principle behind the case is to be practical, yeh it will be opened frequently
<EDIT> ouu and a nother thing: i see that everybody uses fans, personaly dont like them that much, sa I aint gonna have none:D i'm gonna blowers :D
i just have to finde 5 or 6 of them :p
not this one but is just for reference
-
Re: the Box
looking at that and you are right, :P fool me, does just sort of look like two L shaped bits with a bar between them.
are not blowers usually noisier?
looking forward to seeing how you do this, looking forward to seeing how that hinge actually works.
had another idea for a concealed hinge as well if you are interested, is a bit less complex as well... maybe, an L shaped piece of, well a piece of anything strong enough to supporth the top of your case, on a hing would allow it to be set inside the case.
or if it is a computer you may want to have operating whilst open perhaps a toolbox style pair of metal bars on each side?
