for the cross over the drives, you could section the cross off by just cutting the number of slits in it as the number of drives. then you could add more, and each section could open freely

you could just exclude the big ol fan altogether. it might look alright just to not have it at all, and have smaller fans on the inside, or even liquid cooled

and idea for the ^^ alien tech idea. make an energy sword out of plexiglass and put a few leds behind it shining down to the tip if you could do that well, i think itd be pretty cool
