If you have access to a table saw it will give the ability to lower the blade so you can cut grooves (thickness of the blade) without cutting the thickness of the material.

Even big stores that have an automotive section carry rolled sheets of aluminum for body repair. I've seen it here on the north side in Canadian Tire, something like $10.99 CAD for a single sheet big...
