    Default ram modules

I have just brought 2gb of ram off ebay, here. i inserted it into my motherboard but it only comes up as 1gb with both dimms in and 512mb with one in.
i have an asus p5s800-vm motherboard. in the motherboard manual it says next to the ram part.
"2 x 184 pin dimm sockets support up to 2gb of unbuffered non ECC 400/333/266 mhz ddr dimms"

have i got the wrong memory or should it work?

    thanks

    Joe

If the memory is recognized as 1gb total before Windows starts, then I'd say you have the wrong memory.

If you only insert one, it says 512mb right? Does it do the same for either stick? If so, I'd contact the seller, and verify that you got the right stuff. I think they may have shipped you the wrong ram!

Another way to verify this is to test it in another computer. If you get the same result, it's definitely the wrong ram.

it is on XP. when i start up, in bios it says i have 1Gb with both dimms installed. with one it says 512MB with both sticks. i have already contacted them to check it.
hopefully i can get some new stuff.

just saw a deal thuoth for 2gb of corsair ram for £70 ($140 USD), might just go for that if they will refund me.

thanks for the help. i will keep you informed

he has replied and is saying the memory he sent me is high density and my motherboard only supports low density. it said this on his listing but as everything else seemed right i didnt know. What is this high density, low density all about?

    thanks Joe
