    Default Cheap Belt Sanding

Note: This is not my original idea--I saw it in a woodworking magazine.

The problem: I need a stationary belt sander.

The bigger problem: Said belt sanders start at ~$400 US.

The solution: A hand-held belt sander and a heavy duty vice.

In a nutshell, invert the sander and clamp it in the vice. Plug it in, turn it on, and sand away to your heart's content!

Please, give me a bit of time here. School and work first...although if it was up to me, work would not be in the equation.

Old thread but here's some tips.
Look for an old nitro RC starter box.
You can used the parts from one of those to build a belt sander.

I can throw up some plans but it's stupid easy to build, a couple brackets, a way to tension the belt. The rollers are rubber coated (rubber hose). easy easy

You could use a fan motor to power a belt.
