Default Home network is being wonky

First off, I've googled. Repeatedly. No answers.

Here's the setup: Two computers running XP Home and 1 computer running Ubuntu 7.10. My computer and the linux box can talk, no sweat. However, my wife's computer is being, well, pissy. It won't connect to either machine. I've ran the XP home network wizard on both.

Wifi router is Linksys, as are all three of the wireless NICs. Yes, the server is currently on wifi as well. This will be remedied later.

Subnet mask is the same on all three computers. Wife's 'puter is running ZoneAlarm, with the home network range (192.168.1.100 to 149) in the trusted zone.

The two XP boxes were able to see each other on the network until I decided to do a fresh install of XP. Now her machine is being a loner, for lack of a better term.

So what's causing this? I'm thinking the culprit is ZA, and just uninstalled it from her machine.

One other thing: for some reason her box isn't showing a 1394 Net Adapter connection. Also, her linksys software has been bitchy, and the windows wireless network has been doing the work as of late.

I'm suspecting ZA right now as well. Can she surf ok? What other security software is installed? Norton, McAfee? Honestly, with ZA on there, you're doubling your efforts on the firewall. The router will act as a firewall being as it's the device the world will be able to see. Now, if you had some kind of port forwarding active to her machine, you might want to put add'l firewall software on it, but for troubleshooting purposes, let it uninstalled. I'll be on for about another hour. Let me know.

Wow, that was fast guys. Glad to see I'm not the only night owl here.

I've removed ZA from her machine. Still not seeing anything. Let me check some other settings and I'll get back to ya.

Edit--ZoneAlarm is/was the problem. A good thing to know, as I didn't really want to go thru a fresh install on her system, even though it's in dire need.

Thanks for the help, incoming rep guys!

good move on the troubleshooting dude. you did it exactly right by removing things that would only cause more difficulty when trying to work out the base problem. and while your at it you managed to remove the problem. thats good troubleshooting logic +rep
