    with stock settings/cooling on a q6600 it should be about 35-45C idle and 45-55C load i believe.

    was that 98 you said Celsius or Fahrenheit?

    ya man your heatsink isn't installed properly. is the fan running? does the whole heatsink jiggle/move around if you try to twist/lift/shake it?

    it's automatically shutting down as that temp is way to high.

    no they put the right amount on, i am 90% sure its not properly seated/installed.

    here is a tutorial on how to install the heatsink from intel.

    The problem is the fact your thermal pad breaks once you take it off, it's transferring the heat as it's meant to now. You'll need to apply a thermal paste and remove the thermal pad from both the heatsink and the CPU. It's also possible that when you removed the heatsink and replaced it, that part of the CPU doesn't have any thermal pad on it and somewhere else has 2 layers of it.

    btw, you're experiencing thermal shutdowns. Your CPU is massivally overheating.

    just to be clear;
    if this (picture below) is what is shipped with q6600, sounds like what he said, then its thermal grease not a pad, in which case you can 'reuse' it on the same installation and be fine. though if you have AS5 i would put that on instead.

    There must be something wrong because when all four pins are pushed in the motherboard from the heatsinc there is 2 which the black parts dont poke out of
    but it still sits firmly in the motherboard.

    I took it off and put it back on but the CPU temp still went up to 90c
