Depends on what you want to do - if you're just looking to surf the web, email etc then linux will do it all out of the box (or off the disk) - office tasks too are very doable in linux, but unfortunately, unless you have a pretty good working knowledge, much more than that can get complicated. As for gaming, windows is the only way to go for now - there are a few titles out there but windows has too much market share and linux too little to have game developers climbing over each other to linux-code new games

ahh yeah i'd say the main use of my rig right now is hosting Age of Mythology lan parties
