He should have been let go right then and there. "You need to sleep at night? Go home and get all the sleep you want."
Hijack away, we can turn this into the "night shift stories" thread if you want.

Must be nice to be able to sleep in shifts. I know there are nights here when there is absolutely NOTHING going on, and it would be nice to take a break.
I'd say he should be fired.
I work as many nightshifts as I do dayshifts. I work in a mine, and my team consists of the same people whether we are days or nights. About 95% of the time, we have a lot better production on night shift than we do on days.
Luke122, you're in Olds aren't you? Please tell me that didn't happen there.
My goal in life is to earn enough money to enjoy the lifestyle that my wife and kids do.
I used to work the odd nightshift. It was sooo easy.
We made some large control panels, which had to be environmentally tested. Basically this meant running them at elevated temperatures for 12 hours at a time. This couldn't be done during the day as the opening and closing of factory doors would disturb things, so the hot cycle was done overnight.
If there was anything else to do at the time, such as working on another panel, then I would do that as well, but mostly I was monitoring the temperature and writing letters to my g/f half way round the world.
Pity there was no net connection back then...
We'd sometimes order a takeaway, which would be delivered right to my desk!
Never slept though.
His boss probably did not even realize what the dude just said. He probably did not really hear the words and just dismissed the excuse as pure BS.
at my place of work we can't sleep even if theres nothing to do,
The night shift always seems to be more productive than day shifts, i always do nights if there on, its normally the same crew, its asif its in my contract written in invisable ink, but i like it.
last time i got told the night shift was for one week, six weeks later i was still on the night shift, Nights again next week! YAY
